Palahniuk Guns Blazing

I’ve said before that reading a Chuck Palahniuk book is like driving by a very bad car wreck – shocking but impossible to look away from.  Yesterday I finished reading Snuff, the next in the series my son in law set me off on a while back.  I should have been prepared as Chuck was taking on the porn industry with his depraved cynicism.
Per usual most of his characters are completely degenerate but since this was the porn industry he was allowed to take the reader even deeper, which is scary when you consider the depths Palahniuk routinely explores in his books.  This was a great read as you watch the seemingly good characters dissolve in front of your eyes as we learn more and more about them.  This being Palahniuk, the term “good” is highly relativistic since they’re all part of a fading porn goddess’ attempt to set a fornication record by having sex with 600 men in a single day – like I said – Palahniuk!

Chuck takes no prisoners as he completely skewers the porn industry as well as America’s hidden fascination with it.  His trademark humor is also there as he has a lot of fun with the titles of porn movies as he would take a well known movie and turn it into a porn title – Sperms of Endearment for example.  This was vintage Palahniuk - raunchy, hilarious, and very pointed – I loved it.

Since you always feel a little tainted leaving Chuck’s very bizarre world I was lucky last night with date night.  My wife and I went to see 2 Guns, starring Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington.  On the surface that sounds like a mismatch but Wahlberg is evolving into a very good actor and more than held his own with Denzel.  They play two undercover agents trying to survive after being double-crossed by everybody from a Mexican drug cartel to the US military to the CIA.
This was a very good, very funny movie as the two actors chewed up the scenery.  It’s a great example of a fairly mundane plot that’s elevated by the actors involved and included some very well staged action scenes.

We returned home to find the Red Sox once again losing to the worst team in the major leagues, 7-3.  In other years this would signal another one of those ghastly road trips where the team just lays down for a series of games against sub-standard competition.  Luckily this was not like other years as the Sox came roaring back and thoroughly pummeled the lowly Astros 15-10.  I think Farrell might want to rethink his plans on resting his regular starters.
Gritty Sox Win Another
