Charlie Guard Reunion

Today was a bona fide treat as I journeyed across the state to link up with an old Army buddy for lunch. Not just any old buddy either. My decision to stay in the Army was based in large part upon the fun I had with my first command. That was a company command in the Old Guard and the guy I met up with today was my hand-picked Executive Officer, whom I would summon to my office by bellowing “XO” at the top of my lungs. He was a special guy then and remains so. He was quite the ladies’ man back in the day and all the married dudes (such as myself) lived vicariously through his romantic adventures, which are the stuff of legend.

With Former XO and his Kid Today
He settled down late in life which is why he was traveling to Massachusetts with his sixteen year old son. They live near Chicago. The son is a fabulous lacrosse player and has been selected for the under-19 USA National Team. They had a practice session in Deerfield which explained his presence in the Commonwealth. I hadn’t seen my old XO in more than ten years so I wasn’t going to miss on this opportunity. It was time so well spent although I’m sure his son had better things to do than listen to two old war horses recount the semi-misspent days of their youth. He and I, as well his fellow lieutenants, totally turned around Charlie Company (nicknamed Charlie Guard) during our tenure there; winning Honor Company for two years in a row. I still keep the company guidon they gifted to me, when I relinquished command, directly in front of me in the Man Cave as I type this.

At t3eh Diner, Still No Respect from this Guy

The Guidon
We linked up at the practice facility just as the son was finishing his morning practice session. After introductions we set out in search of lunch. My old XO’s logistics abilities seem to have waned a bit because the first two places he selected were both closed. We eventually found a diner in the center of Greenfield where counter space was available. He then pulled the ole, “Whoops, I forgot my wallet” ploy to get out of paying for lunch. Some things never change (the fellow lieutenants mentioned above are nodding as they read this). We had a good laugh about that but I would have paid much more than I did for the opportunity to catch up with my old friend. There’s something redemptive about re-connecting with old buddies after a long hiatus. Such a great time.

Great Seats for Concert
Apparently, there was a lot more going on with the FBR’s and Wingman’s trip to St Louis. They were there to also see a concert by the Linda Lindas. I have no idea who this L.A. based, rock group is but apparently they’re a big deal. Wingman used his rock and roll contacts to get the FBR a backstage meetup with the group. This is the type of things lifelong memories are made of. Since Wingman (and the FBR) are also baseball fans they also took in a Cardinals’ game at Busch Stadium. As I said, lifelong memories.

Two movies fell in my A-Z watch, both keepers, Executive Decision, very taut action with Kurt Russell in terrorist infested 747, added benefit – Steven Seagal killed off early on; and Ex Machina – interesting to watch after all AI discussion in news recently

Youthful Summer Weather

The past few weeks have been nothing like what I think New England summer weather should be. It reminded me more of what we left Panama to escape – the rainy season. That is marked by oppressive humidity and way too much rain. While the rain hasn’t been up to tropical levels, the humidity reminds me of some of the less salubrious summers I spent in Ft Benning’s School for boys in Georgia. In other words – more than cruel. It’s been very un-New Englandlike. I’ve written before about the summers of my youth, growing up in New Hampshire. There were only three or four nights all summer that were too hot/humid to sleep comfortably. The nights were almost uniformly cool and there was no real need for air conditioning. Times have changed or my time on the South has changed me into someone more dependent on freon.

Departure Day for FBR, Wingman, and Wingmom
I bring this all up because, after a series of ferocious thunderstorms last night, a front came through and we woke up to what I think of as a “typical” New England summer day. The humidity was gone and there was a pleasant breeze wafting over our hill top. My Favorite Panamanian had every window in the house open shortly after arising. I was able to mow the lawn in the middle of the day without several gallons of sweat donated to the cause. The cosmos seems to have shifted back to normal, at least weather wise. Everything else, not so much.

Finds a Canine Friend Upon Arrival
Meanwhile the FBR is out on an adventure with her dad and Wingmom. They flew to St Louis on Friday for the weekend. It offers Wingmom a chance to link up with some of the friends she left behind when she moved to New Jersey. The FBR was excited because she loves to travel. Wingman also has friends on the area as he spent some of his youth in the city. They were greeted with 108 degrees, so weather was not near as fun as we’re enjoying.

Three movies fell in my A-Z watch, all keepers, Escape from L.A., total camp but Snake Plissken!!; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so much better than I remembered; and Excalibur, silly but eternally fun re-telling of Arthurian legend.

Birthday Beach

Okay. Back from a thoroughly enjoyable time with my son, his family, and the ABFA’s parents in a very nice beachfront home in Hampton. The house was right on the ocean and steps away from a beautiful beach. As usual after prolonged exposure to granddaughters, my Favorite Panamanian and I are in the process of recovering. Energy levels are as low as expected after having those levels sucked nearly dry by the BRS and BR3 over the past few days. Too much fun. This is the third year in a row they’ve rented the same house but we, missed last year with a Covid episode. It also included the birthday of my Favorite Son, so that just added to the fun.

Just Prior to Leaving Today with my Son and his Kids
We drove over on Tuesday morning in time to catch an afternoon on the beach with the gathered worthies. My Favorite Panamanian had spent most of Monday preparing two meals as well as one of her signature birthday cakes. I forgot to take a picture of the back of our car after we packed up for the trip. I was amazed we were only going three days because there wasn’t much room left in the car. We do not travel light when granddaughters are involved. The BRS and BR3 immediately set about trying to collect every single rock on the beach. There were a lot of rocks. The BRS is a bona fide beach fanatic. It is hard to keep her away from the water or to get her to return to the house. BR3, on the other hand, has a short-timed fuse when it comes to beach enjoyment. She has more fun running around the house creating her own special brand of havoc. There was a rotating duty roster amongst her parents and the ABFA’s parents about who would escort her back to the house so the rest of the gang could enjoy the beach.

Wife Grabs Son on Deck of the House
The best part of the trip for me (other than the obligatory thong watch) was hanging out back at the house with our hosts. They’re just the best people to be around. I also got some extended time watching the Red Sox with my son, a real treat. The Sox obliged by winning two games against the best team in baseball. Wednesday was my son’s birthday and his stated wish was to see two movies in the theater (for some unknown reason he’s a movie nut). While the rest of the crew stayed at the beach, my wife and I escorted our son to the movies. We saw Oppenheimer at one of those theaters with vibrating floors cued by the movie soundtrack. As you can imagine with a movie about nuclear weapons, the floor boards got a workout. The second movie was the continuation of the Insidious series, the first of which scared the bejesus out of me. My Favorite Panamanian does not partake of the horror genre but fortunately there was a Marshalls’ next to the theater. So, a very expensive movie.

Abuela Time
My son had done a fabulous job planning the day as we raced between theaters to see the two movies with time to get back to the beach with the maximum amount of time possible. We returned home to find the granddaughters ready to celebrate their dad’s birthday, most especially the cake. Bonecrusher accompanied us on the trip and was deployed as part of the family tradition of cake cleaving. The best gift anyone can receive for a birthday is the love of family and my son was literarily inundated from us, his own, and the ABFA’s family. That is only appropriate considering who the birthday boy was. In a truly heartwarming, yet intensely hilarious, moment the ABFA delivered her “birthday” card to my son. It was a beautiful, heartfelt card with words that appropriately summed up her deep feelings for her husband. The only hitch, it was an anniversary card; which she didn’t notice until she was writing her personal message within. Way, way too funny.

BRS Finds Another Rock

Thursday was a hazy, overcast day which was perfect for someone with my dermatological issues. It did, although, cut down on the thong quotient. Sacrifices must be made. My Favorite Panamanian and I went on an extended beach walk with the BRS who was an apt student when I tried to show her how to skip rocks on the water. Anything to keep her from collecting yet more rocks to carry with us. My Favorite Panamanian also collected a large amount of rocks to take home with us. I asked her why since our home is liberally blessed with a multitude of rocks. She said these were more aesthetically pleasing. Go figure.

Each morning my Favorite Panamanian gathered her hojaldra acolytes, the BRS and BR3, for breakfast. When we were packing up to leave today, the BRS plaintively asked who was going to make their breakfasts with their abuela’s departure. I’ll miss the time around the table with the ABFA’s parents who are rated amongst the nicest people in the Western World. I wanted to get on the road before noon today based on my estimation of traffic on a summer Friday. Luckily we were moving south as the other side of the highway looked like a parking lot, stuffed with people headed to the beach. We had our fair share of traffic though but nothing could dim the feelings of contentment for the time spent with such special people.

BRS and BR3, Way Too Cute
Oppenheimer is a great movie. There is no other way to describe it. I learned a lot about the back story about this amazing man which also offers insight into the troubled 1950s and the Red scare. The cast may be the most talented ever assembled. It seemed with every new character arriving on the screen, a major actor was revealed. Extreme credit to Cillian Murphy who more than holds his own against the amazing co-stars as the title character. Nolan, as he is wont to do, has created a whole world, this one historical, and the viewer is transported back to the early 1900s and World War 2 and its immediate aftermath. If nothing else, this film will allow some of the well-earned redemption and accolades for Oppenheimer who was denied during his life. While some people will criticize the lauding of the father of the atomic bomb, I’m grateful. My father was scheduled to crew a very exposed boat in the US Navy preparing to invade Japan in 1945. The bomb probably saved his life.

Insidious, the Red Door, takes us back into the “Further” where the red-faced demon dwells. The first movie scared the hell out of me when the demon would pop up unexpectedly in the middle of conversations. The same actors and characters return in this sequel; with the young boy now a college freshman. The demon figures out a way to worm his way back into the picture (literally) and the scares commence. The first half of the movie does a great job of building up the tension and scares, but the film stumbles to the finish line. Great acting from the cast, but the writers failed to deliver here. Still a good scare, just not the iconic one the first movie was.

Three movies fell in my A-Z watch, all keepers, Eragon, better than I remembered, dragons and magic!; Eraser, Ahhnuld once again, one of his best ones; and Escape Plan, Sly and Ahhnuld together at last, acceptable but not great.

Anticipation

The body is finally starting to put the past week behind us. It seemed to have taken some sort of evil pleasure from demonstrating just how old I’ve gotten that three days of painting walls could produce such deleterious effects. The other option is that I’ve just become a wimp but I dismiss that out of hand, but, maybe not as quickly as I once might have. It finally stopped raining long enough to mow the lawn this past Saturday but I judiciously waited until late in the day so I could do it mostly in the shadows. You see, an old dog can learn new tricks.

We received this photo of the FBR this past weekend as well, which marked the falling out of her last stich from her “chin music” episode at the WooSox game during her recent visit. It looks like the Urgent Care doc did a great job as its healed nicely. They’re applying industrial levels of sunscreen on it for the summer to reduce scarring. The FBR was flippant discussing it. It was nice to see her bounce back from an event that had me almost as close to tears as she was.

Nicely Healed
Now as to that title above, tomorrow we leave for the New Hampshire seacoast to spend a few days with my Favorite Son and his family. They’re renting an upscale beach house for the third year in a row and we get to spend a few days with them and the ABFA’s parents. We missed out on it last year when both my Favorite Panamanian and I came down with Covid, so additional motivation. My Favorite Panamanian has been cooking for two days straight to bring some of their favorite dishes with us. That will include a birthday cake, which looks fabulous, as is typical when she is involved. Why a birthday cake you may ask; well there is the not so small occasion of my son’s birthday on Wednesday which we are going to celebrate with the assembled worthies mentioned above. So, yeah, lots of anticipation. You will also benefit as I will not be posting on Frail Deeds for the time I’m there. The BRS and BR3 would expect no less.

Getting back to the recovery from last week; I’ve done a little bit of online research, for whatever that’s worth. I think my mistake was not listening to my body when it began to tell me I needed to rest. I blame the Army for my attitude towards such warnings. You are expected to ignore fatigue and the myriad of other notices your body tries to send you to accomplish the mission. Always accomplish the mission. I’m not sure where I can change the default button on my body to civilian mode but that has to happen. I just might have to start listening to my Favorite Panamanian when she tells me I need to rest. If getting old didn’t involve enough indignities already! But, as my Cantankerous Friend cogently observed, while getting old does in fact suck, it certainly beats the alternative.

Four movies fell in my A-Z watch, all keepers, Enemy of the State, great action with Hackman and Smith; Entourage the Movie, still love to live vicariously through Vinny and the boys; The Equalizer, Denzel can do anything but who knew he could be so dangerous; and Equalizer 2, every bit as good as the first, tough for a sequel.

Operational Pause and Culmination

Well, my week of wall painting finally reached its end late yesterday just before the celebrations for the First Friday of the Week commenced. Both my Favorite Panamanian and I learned we are not as young as we used to be in fairly definitive fashion. We thought we could put in twelve-hour work days for three days in a row without paying a penalty. That was not the case. My wife’s bad leg and arm acted up and I was dealing with some fairly unsettling re-occurrence of some of the issues I had to deal with in the months following prostate surgery. We mutually decided on Wednesday night that we would institute an operational pause for all of Thursday and just rest.

Much Needed Fun Last Night

The Mafia Gathers
That worked. I spent the entire day in the Man Cave devouring movies (see below) and explicitly endeavoring not to spend more than two or three minutes on my feet. We launched again Friday morning as she finished up the last of the trim and I knocked out the bathroom and the two entry doors. The house was still in disarray but we didn’t try to exert any kind of order as that could wait until today. The weirdest part of the operational pause was that my legs were cramping up uncontrollably at night. I experienced a similar thing when I first went to Panama and had to abandon the daily bike work out. So, Thursday I knocked out 30 minutes on the bike and the cramps were vanquished.

Door to Garage

Bathroom

Front Door
The bright spot is that everything came out looking great. We still have some curtains to install and some wallpapering (that will be my Favorite Panamanian’s job). All of this week’s exertions prepared us for a memorable First Friday celebration. We hadn’t planned on even trying to dance but the Neighborhood Mafioso called for an impromptu assembly of the Panamanian mafia at her home so we wandered across the street to her abode after we cleaned up. It turned out to be a great night of laughing with these superb friends. I had to repair to a spare bed room to accomplish the Family FaceTime call which the FBR thought was strange but it was good seeing all those faces. The Mafioso’s daughter showed up later and joined in the hilarity. The Mafioso’s husband and I have perfected his ability to smuggle additional beers to me after I emptied the cooler I brought with us. It was the perfect way to end this week of too much work and we even got a couple dances in later in the night before we left. I don’t know how much rest we’ll get next week as we’ll be visiting my son’s family at his rented beach house in Hampton and the BRS/BR3 combo don’t exude restful tendencies. Morale, however, will skyrocket

Seven movies fell in my A-Z watch, like I said, day off in the Man Cave, all keepers except one, Emmanuel, First Contact, fell in love with Krista Allen when meeting her on Skinamax in 90s, apparently I’ve outgrown her, discard bin; Enchanted, so funny, Amy Adamas is perfect in this; Ender’s Game, book was so much better but this was still good; End of Days, may be Ahnuuld’s best movie, fighting the devil; End of Watch, awesome buddy movie, love Michael Pena; Enemy at the Gates, Soviets versus the Nazis, who to root for?, Law and Weisz have real chemistry; and new addition to the library, Kandahar, Butler blowing up Iranians, well alright.
