First Friday Tragedy

Calm Down. I’m kidding. Well almost. Regular readers of Frail Deeds know that I hold the celebration of the First Friday that occurs each week as a sacrosanct event, worthy of celebration for its intrinsic value even though, as a retiree, every day is now a weekend. As I rushed around prepping for the family FaceTime call which no qualifies as the most important part of the celebration, I realized I was down to only one Coors Lite! I know. Shocking. I chalk this down to my increasing senility in failing to secure the most important ingredient, well next to talking with the kids and Great Aunt, for a successful First Friday.

The Toned Down Driveway

Why, at the same time, was I rushing around you may ask. Yesterday was the only day in the next seven that promised sunshine all day. You may recall that when the city repaved our street a couple years ago, they excavated a good third of my new, freshly sealed driveway as well. I must be a little obsessive compulsive because it always bothered me to have a clear difference between the two parts of the fairly small (thank God) driveway. So, I was out front yesterday with the power washer and once it dried with the driveway sealant and the squeegee applicator. It’s done but I still have, although less conspicuous, two tone driveway until the fresh sealant ages to the older part and I can always take pride that I sacrificed a beer run to make it happen. (maybe not)

You can probably guess that my Favorite Panamanian wasn’t upset at all at my predicament. She has little patience with me in that area, something I take more than a little pride in earning. It was a fun call despite the lack of Coors Lite. I did try adding an IPA that I keep on hand for Wingman visits but that tasted like, well an IPA, which I hate. I know there are at least a thousand of you out there feeling intense sympathy for me. Strangely none of that thousand were on the call last night, oh well. The granddaughters were in their usual peerless states. We learned BR3 will have an absolute melt down if anyone else tries to feed Riggins. The dog looked a little frantic during the call because BR3 was out in her Barbie car touring the neighborhood and hopefully not ramming the back of her dad’s car (again - why does that always seem to happen to him, just asking) when his feeding time rolled around. The FBR, after downing her pizza had no interest in the call and demanded at least forty-seven times that her mom start the movie night. There was some great health news from Wingmom which made everyone happy. So, a fairly “dry” First Friday, but hey, today’s Saturday, so there is some room for reconvening.

Two movies fell in my A-Z watch, both keepers, Death Becomes Her, where CGI became main stream, forgot what a good comedic actor Bruce Willis was; and Death Race, Stratham being Stratham, Natalie Martinez’ entrance – wow!

Distance Viewing

Through the magic of today’s electro-magnetic spectrum we were able to catch a bit of the FBR’s T-ball game last evening in New Jersey. My daughter Facetimed us in to watch the glorious chaos that always marks a T-ball game. The FBR was definitely into the game, unlike many of her teammates. She fielded everything that came her way and even tried a couple throws to first base. She also got a couple of hits while we were watching. If this sounds like I’m bragging; you’re absolutely right. It was fun to see her so obviously enjoying the game after taking a couple thousand practice swings over the past couple years. We grabbed some screen shots to capture the drama.

The last couple days have been interesting as they represent a truly retired lifestyle. I thought I’d be having a majority of these when I finally stopped active employment. However, confirmed by many fellow retirees, it seems like it’s almost busier being retired. I envisioned days lounging around contemplating my navel, not having to work, and enjoying just that. There’s always something to do, be it errands, visits, or chores around the house that were always pushed to the weekend while working. Well, now every day is a weekend. I like it, but, as I said above, the last couple days threatened some rain so the two major outdoor projects I have lined up had to wait. That meant after the morning long exercise sessions I was left at loose ends. My Favorite Panamanian was decisively engaged elsewhere so she didn’t drop in on me in the Man Cave to coax me out of sloth. This can’t last but, it’s kind of cool.

Two movies fell in my A-Z watch, both definite keepers, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (new addition), long but solid follow up to original and The Wild Bunch, one of the best westerns ever made with wildest climax ever. This marks the end of the new, upgraded movies I recently purchased so now it’s back to the Ds starting tomorrow.

First Time Out

It took a bit longer or a full recovery from Monday’s endoscopic delving than usual. My appetite returned in an all too voracious state. The sedative they used had me seriously uncoordinated for the better part of Monday and early Tuesday. I’ll never be the most graceful of individuals but it was weird to have the arms and legs respond slowly to my intentions. After a few missed stair steps, I had to adjust my activity level which was new. I think it falls into the “getting old sucks” category. That meant additional time supine on the Man Cave, see movie log below.

I felt well enough, or at least back to my minimal coordination level, on Tuesday afternoon that I mowed the lawn for the first time in 2023. Now that I think about it, pushing a whirling sharp blade around the lawn probably wasn’t the best choice for a first activity out of the chute after the coordination issues. Returning to such mundane task has a way of making me feel more like I’m really back home. Of course, the complete lack of a tropical beach out my front window does that in a lot more definitive manner. There is a certain welcome nostalgia embedded in the mundanity. Both my Favorite Panamanian and I have medical appointments stacked up over the next month, scheduled around our time in Panama. See comment above about aging.

We finally saw Creed 3, on Tuesday. This continues to be a worthy continuation on the Rocky story, even without Rocky. Michael B. Jordan has made this story his own though and continues to be a remarkable screen presence. That talent extends behind the camera as well as he also directed this outing. Sadly, (if the rumors of his misbehavior are true), Jonathan Majors also continues his streak of memorable performances. He plays a childhood (stress on the hood) friend of Creed who emerges from a lengthy prison sentence to reconnect with the now retired Creed. He feels Creed stole his life as a promising, pre-prison boxer and you know they’ll end up in the ring together. That’s sets up yet another memorable fight scene that’s worth the price of admission in and of itself. Really good movie.

Four movies fell in my A-Z watch, all definite keepers, Plane (new addition), Gerard Butler being Gerard Butler; Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (new addition), Nicholas Cage poking serious fun at himself and Hollywood, so funny; Violent Night (new addition), Santa as you never seen him before, darkly funny; and Wild Card, Statham carving up Vegas hoods, my Favorite Panamanian’s cinematic boyfriend.

Well, That’s Over

I’m not speaking about my weekend with my son and the BSR/BR3. I never want those kinds of weekends to end. However, we had today’s colonoscopy awaiting me and I am definitely happy that thing is in the rear-view mirror (if you will excuse the expression) now. Let’s focus on the positive and that would definitely be the granddaughter time. We arrived in New Hampshire on Friday afternoon in time to accompany my son to pick up the granddaughters at Day Care. Granddaughter hugs ensued. We returned home where my Favorite Panamanian had organized a belated Easter egg hunt in the front yard followed by the obligatory abuela gifts. She was a little disappointed that the girls blew right by the new clothes to focus on the chocolate bunnies but they are true ABFA daughters.

Happy Time
We had a great time reconnecting with these two sprites over pizza before their bedtime. After that my son indoctrinated me into the fundamental joy that is his recently completed home theater. I was truly impressed and more than a little jealous. It was truly like sitting in a personal movie theater. Since my Favorite Panamanian went upstairs to pray, we were free to watch Underworld with Kate Beckinsale in all her spandexed glory. We were back there Saturday night for Star Trek Beyond. To say I was in cinematic heaven for these two nights would be an understatement. My son “done good”. I’m guessing he bred true from his cinephile dad.

Abuela Presents, Chocolate!!!

Abuela with BRS and BR3 on their Playground
Earlier on Saturday, after the de rigueur hojaldra breakfast from their abuela, and way too much time watching Blippi, we accompanied the ladies to their gymnastics class. We watched from above as they both made their way through their lessons. My son accompanied BR3 and, against her normal free agent personality, she actually stayed engaged and did really well. Even though it was a cool, kind of raw day my Favorite Panamanian decreed an ice cream outing was on the program for the afternoon. The granddaughters were in complete agreement with this declaration.

Hojaldras!

We had just scored the ice cream when BR3 declared she needed to go to the potty. This despite confirming to her dad just before we left that there was no need. We bundled back into the car leaving some ice cream on the car’s ceiling (Thank God that was my wife and not me). Upon returning home, BR3’s potty alert turned out to be a false alarm, go figure, but it was better eating the treats in a heated environment. Both granddaughters seem to be on the verge of a growth spurt since they both ate full dinners a couple hours later.

Meanwhile in New Jersey the FBR was following through with her latest obsession, baseball. I don't know where she got that from, but with Wingman and I has blood relations it was probably a forgone conclusion. Wingman took her and a friend to a minor league game  after the FBR's first hit in T-ball. Sunday dawned in New Hampshire with my realization I had to follow the pre-op procedures which meant beef broth for both breakfast and lunch. We were lucky enough to spend a few moments with the ABFA when she returned from her more than earned ladies weekend at a spa. My Favorite Panamanian and I drove home through some tough rain where I could continue the prep which included the 4-6pm downing of a week’s worth of laxatives with the ensuing fun and games that entailed.

Obligatory Mascot Interaction

It was so cold in the house I turned the heat back on. Of course, the furnace didn’t turn on. When I went down to find out why to find a red screen on the device saying I had to reset it. It’s one of those new, highly efficient types. I had to make four or five trips up and down the stairs, which were not occurring at the best times since I had to schedule them between dashes to the, well, you know where. I eventually turned the thermostats off and restarted them which worked. If nothing else the “kids” have taught me when the computer isn’t working, re-start it. I spent the rest of the day in our old master bed room with the handy rest room facilities watching in sequence, the Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics. All of whom won! That and the movies below made the time pass quickly.

This prep went a lot smoother than earlier versions. I didn’t have anything other than jello and Gatorade after leaving my son’s house around noontime but I didn’t feel as drained or headachy as I had in prior procedures. I was once again impressed with the efficiency of the UMASS Memorial endoscopy crew. The anesthesiologist playfully informed me I would be receiving the same sedation that Michael Jackson used. I wish she hadn’t said that. I was out like a light for the entire process where I achieved much better results than prior iterations. The Lorna Doone cookies and soda the nurse provided afterwards were sublime. So hungry. And that’s over for at least five years!

Two movies fell in my A-Z watch, both definite keepers, Solider, underrated sci fi epic with Kurt Russel and Stripes, filmed at same base I took basic training just a year afterwards, lots of nostalgia.

Catch Up

I hurriedly posted yesterday after my Deckzilla adventures and forgot to mention I saw two movies at the theater on Tuesday. This was a planned excursion allowing my Favorite Panamanian over five hours of unfettered shopping time at the Blackstone Shoppes while I watched the movies. She is one of the only people I’ve ever met who could happily spend that much time shopping. The only tradeoff was to see movies she wouldn’t, in other words, horror movies. I was a little nervous since, as I’ve gotten older, I internalize the horror a little too much, scare myself more than I should. I know, weird.

I discovered that, despite a lifelong investigation to prove otherwise, you can eat too much popcorn. I think it was the newly advertised jumbo size, that or the bowl of ice cream I scored between movies. Either one did me in. Apparently, a senior citizen body will protest what used to be a staple part of my diet if taken to extremes. I was at least smart enough not to mention this to my shopping satiated spouse when she picked me up. She kept asking if I felt alright and I said I was in recovery mode from being scared for four hours. Note to self – ice cream and popcorn no longer form a viable food pyramid. But today is the First Friday of the Week, to be enjoyed and celebrated, doubly so, because the celebration will take place in New Hampshire with 2/3s of my granddaughter population present. Hoo Ahhh!!

The Pope’s Exorcist had all the trappings that made the original exorcist movie so scary, deep voices speaking in tongues, spinning heads, and bodily effluents. However this time out it wasn’t nearly as scary. It could be the use of CGI which somehow limits the impact or it could be the exorcist was Maximus Decimus Meridius, General of the Northern Armies. Somehow Russel Crowe’s physicality, which is always preternaturally present in any role, makes it seem like the demon is bound to lose from the start. It was still entertaining to watch him play the quirky priest fighting both the Spanish Inquisition inspired demon and Vatican bureaucrats. Good but not great movie.

Renfield is a lot of campy fun. Nicholas Cage as Dracula, c’mon, who wouldn’t pay to see that. Cage doesn’t disappoint as evil incarnate in a co-dependent relationship with his long time enabler. Nicholas Hoult is back in his Warm Bodies lovable creep mode as the title character trying to break his centuries long devotion to Dracula. He teams up with the always watchable Awkwafina for a show down in New Orleans. There are some very funny moments involving vampire lore and this very dark comedy scores mainly because of the actors who all deliver. The plot is a little uneven but, again, Cage as Dracula, a must see.

One movie fell in my A-Z watch, a definite keeper, Nobody’s Fool, one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. Paul Newman dominates as a small town loser who somehow binds an entire town together.

Springing Up

I’m convinced I’m descended from peasant stock because I love getting outside in the spring and summer to “work the land”. Granted my forbears had to take it a lot more seriously than I do but I honestly missed having small projects to do while we were at our condo in Panama (Shhh, no one mention this to my Favorite Panamanian or she’ll be concocting some for next year). It’s been fairly cold the last few days so my peasant side was easily subdued but today was gloriously springlike. I pulled all the winter storage stuff out of the garage and washed out the inevitable debris from winter driving.

I Get to Hang with These Two This Weekend

In NJ, the FBR's Baseball Career kicks off with T-Ball This Week
We'll Have to Work on the Leg Kick
Then I noted the sad state of that worthy, Deckzilla. She looked a little worn out after being neglected since the last barbecue. The overhead part had been sun bleached gray and the deck floor had a bunch of spots where the stain was flaking off. It was so pleasant and the Red Sox were winning comfortably (which helped motivation) that I decided it was time for Deckzilla’s annual bath. I pulled what is possibly my favorite appliance, the power washer, out and away we went. Three hours later I can no longer stand straight and I anticipate some serious arm cramps but Deckzilla is back to its premiere status. It will just need a coat of stain once it dries out. By next week I should be able to bend over again and get that done.

After the Bath

Patio Also Had to Be Addressed
I’m at a serious dichotomy in terms of morale for this upcoming weekend. On the absolute high (you probably already guessed this) side I’ll have time with granddaughters. On the low side, the impending colonoscopy on Monday morning, which I’ll have to start “studying” for on Sunday. Tomorrow, we drive up to New Hampshire to hang out with my Favorite Son as well as the BRS and BR3. The ABFA heard we were coming and decided to leave town. Kidding. She’s got a ladies weekend planned that she has more than earned. I’ll also get to hang out with my son in his recently completed home theater. Psyched!!!!

Three movies fell in my A-Z watch, all keepers, The Frighteners, love this movie about ghosts, Peter Jackson learned about special effects in this as he followed it with LOTR; The Goonies, guilty pleasure but still effectively pulls heart strings; and Groundhog Day, the one that started this premise, executed with so much heart.

Roothugger Reminder

So, it’s been a fairly hectic first week back in the “world” but events have slowed to a crawl over the past few days. This operational pause was kind of needed as it seems, for some unknown reason, we’re not as young as we used to be. Still, lots of fun with family and friends over the past week, which served as a great reminder of what home is. This isn’t to say we’ve been completely unproductive; you’ll have to remember who I live with. That means we were out in the Favorite Panamanian’s vast garden complex preparing it for the spring onslaught of growth. Since I was standing around on the backyard hill, waiting for the next batch of spousal orders, I started a project I planned last year.

The New Wall
After last year’s patio excavation, I was left with a huge pile of rocks I stacked at the top of the backyard hill. This happens anytime I dig around back there as New England is renowned for its rocky soil. That’s means farming and other attempts to puncture the soil will inevitably lead to an accumulation of rocks. That explains the nearly omnipresent New England stone walls. I decided to add to that number by using those rocks to create a wall behind the highest terrace of the aforementioned garden complex. It wasn’t as much fun as it sounds.

Roothuggers, Back in the Day
What was fun was re-connecting with my Command and General Staff classmates, the most excellent Roothuggers. I’ve missed the last couple of reunions as well as zoom calls due to scheduling conflicts but last night was a great reminder of what true friends they are. We immediately picked up the banter and laughter that was the signature of this eclectic mix of Army leaders. It was decided another reunion, possibly in Arizona later this year, is required. I hope the local breweries are notified in time.

Three movies fell in my A-Z watch, all keepers, Black Adam, new addition to library, much better on second watch; Escape from New York, Snake Plissken, one of the coolest characters, ever; and Family Man, have always loved this “what if” premised movie, makes me think about my own life decisions, have been in love with Tea Leoni ever since I first saw this.
