Fleeting 11th

Poof, just like that I find myself at the end of November. Where the hell did that month go? In reality, we certainly made the most of it which probably explains the fleeting nature of the month. I mean, a trip to New Jersey for the FBR’s birthday, the annual hometown birthday pub crawl returning in all its glory, Thanksgiving followed by second Thanksgiving and a weekend with all three granddaughters assembled. I would be hard pressed to imagine a month better spent. The only problem, it has to end.

Best Part of November
Not to worry though, my absolute favorite time on the year in inbound with December. Since I am only partially employed, there will be fewer Christmas parties but today we’re heading out to buy our Christmas tree and my Favorite Panamanian has begun her annual transformation of the house into a holiday wonderland. You can’t beat that, with a stick. There is, as always, a price to pay for the past weeks of hedonistic pursuits, especially in the calorie intake department. I thought I would sink to the bottom of the pool yesterday with my first swim in a while but had achieved some buoyancy by the end of the workout. I’m figuring another seven pounds to knock off before I repeat the whole process for the Christmas holidays. A good problem to have but challenging with Christmas cookie preparation about to begin.

Beloved Cacophony

I’ve been away from Frail Deeds for nearly a week and it’s not because I was recovering from my annual birthday pub crawl. Well, not only because. I’ve been decisively engaged with granddaughter support activities since Wednesday of last week. The FBR, my daughter, Wingman, and Wingmom joined us Wednesday night for the holiday weekend. The FBR(2d) and my daughter (booster) knocked out their Covid vaccination shots in the morning and then joined the traffic flow north. They made fairly good time and were with us in time for dinner. The first thing the FBR asked was when her cousin, the BRS, was going to join us. This question was to be repeated approximately seven thousand times over the next 26 hours.

The Cacophonic Element

2d Shot!!!!!
Thanksgiving was a lot more subdued and local this year. We decided not to go to my father’s family’s traditional Thanksgiving dinner, one of the most cherished events of the year, because of Covid concerns on behalf of my granddaughters. This meant I was prepping another of my turkey dinners with the able assistance of my daughter’s family. My Favorite Son and his family passed the day at the ABFA’s parents’ house while we were constantly peppered by FBR questions about the BRS arrival time.

Adventuring with the FBR

First Night Fire
In an effort to distract her from this obsession the FBR and I went “adventuring” (her term) in the woods behind our house. She reminded me so much of her mother at the same age as she reveled in ducking through and around the forest. She and I started walking down the trunks of the many felled trees and I had a very lucky moment when my foot slipped off one side of the trunk while I was taking a step and the other foot came down on the other. The luck manifested itself in that the ground was not further below the log than the length of my legs which could have been very painful if not so. We actually had two of these sessions during the day which I enjoyed almost as much as she apparently did. When it was time to return home, she insisted we take the “adventure” way back instead of a path. In another effort to distract the FBR we had a fire in my style challenged back yard fireplace where S’mores were created and enjoyed.

Thanksgiving Dinner

From the Other End
We were still recovering from tryptophan shock in the early evening when my eldest granddaughter’s persistent information requests were finally answered and my other two granddaughters arrived with two very tired parents. Even though it was after everybody under ten’s bedtime we allowed then some time to calm down after the initial joy of reunited cousins. The BRS and FBR were bunking together so the fun continued after they retired for the night. With the assistance of baby monitors we were watching the hijinks unfold as both fought the  best fight against sleep since my daughter’s toddler heydays. There were repeated parent and grandparent interventions to quell the excitement but they resisted all efforts until my Favorite Panamanian spent about twenty minutes with them and they finally went to sleep.

Cousins Together at Last

BR3 Charming Everyone in Sight

Including her Granddad
They were up shortly after four in the morning to resume their reunion activities. I went downstairs a little after six AM to find some bleary eyed parents supervising some highly energized cousins. Thus commenced the first full day of all three granddaughters under our roof for the first time ever. The big event of the day was the annual day after Thanksgiving second Thanksgiving dinner at Great Aunt and Soxfather’s house. We’ve been doing this since the 1990s and was yet another event screwed up by 2020. It took three cars to deploy as we also acquired Keene Friend to rejoin this cherished event. The dinner was every bit as good as usual but we added a new chapter to Great Aunt’s sketchy history with electric knives; duct tape was involved.

Second Thanksgiving Dinner

I love the after party for this event as the dinner dishes are cleared away and we all set up shop at the cleared table surrounded by desserts and adult beverages. The granddaughters and their support element (most of the ladies + Wingman) departed early in order to make granddaughter bed times. Keene Friend once again volunteered to be the designated driver for the rest of us. The ladies reported they ran into the first fairly hefty snow shower of the winter as they made their way home. Meanwhile back in Rhode Island we were fully engaged with the Namesake Nephew and the assembled family of Soxfather. I got into my usual contentious bantering with Soxfather’s sister concerning the quality of Frail Deeds photos, especially those featuring her. That meant, of course, the requirement to take even more. It marked yet another annual event that returned to a semblance of normal after taking the last year off. We made our way home, courtesy of Keene Friend, to find the snow had ceased after leaving just a dusting.

Drive Home for the Ladies
Everyone, except Keene Friend, who made one of his patented early morning departures, stayed over through Saturday. There was a repeat of the morning activities although the granddaughters had done a better job of actually achieving some sleep. At the urging of the FBR there was a combined adventure walk back through the snowy woods with both the FBR and BRS.  The stated purpose was to get some more firewood for yet another s’more laced fire Saturday evening. The FBR reveled in the chance to show her younger cousin the secret ways through the woods she had reconnoitered. We took some time out of the fun to take our adventurers to see the movie Encanto which was more than worth the effort (review below).

Having so Much Fun

Cousin Time
We returned home for pizza and a celebration of the FBR’s birthday once again. My Favorite Panamanian created another of her very special cakes, this one with a doll somehow emerging from the crown. Soxfather and Great Aunt journeyed up to join in the celebration. It was fun to watch Soxfather once again working his Pied Piper type magic with another generation of toddlers as he entranced both the FBR and BRS with his signature silliness. Most of the crowd wimped out on my fire since it was cold outside. Alright, it was damned cold outside, but I had promised the BSR a fire and, well, there you have it. To her immense credit the BSR hung out there with me for the entire fire where adults only came out for short stretches. I did appreciate the effort of these family members to come out and enjoy the bracing night air with me.

This morning dawned with the knowledge the four-day sojourn in bliss was to come to an end as the granddaughters and their parental units were departing. Another hojaldra laced breakfast and the pack out began. I told the parents the house was going to be so quiet with their departure. I got the impression these parents of toddlers would love to have a few days of this lack of decibels.  I always caution them to savor the noise because these times with the very young children are so fleeting and despite the numerous and sometimes onerous price parents must pay, this is a magical time. Having granddaughters has reminded me these long lost times when my kids were this age and how much damned fun it was to be around them as they discovered the world. As I stated above, I urged them to savor this beloved cacophony.

Back in New Jersey and Resting

In some housekeeping from my absence from the blog I saw three movies this week. The first was the biggest surprise. King Richard is the story of the incredible, tennis playing, Williams sisters. I wasn’t a big fan of their dad when they first burst on the scene as I thought he was a publicity seeking vampire capitalizing on his daughters’ unbelievable talents. While I know this is a Hollywood version of the true story, I still found it compelling as it chronicled the steadfast and thoroughly irritating way he protected Venus and Serena during their formative years. A lot of credit has to go to Will Smith who proves once again he is a true movie star who made the frustrating lead lovable even at his worst. The sisters were obviously involved in this biopic and you could sense the love they still feel for their departed father and all he did for them.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was lot of nostalgic fun as it went back to connect with the peerless first film. Egon’s grandchildren assume his role in protecting the world from old friend, Zuul; this time from an isolated midwestern farm. The movie captures a lot of the silly fun associated with the first film and the young female lead steals every scene she’s in as the nerdy granddaughter channeling her grandad’s oddity and genius. The rest of the cast is also on track with Paul Ruud in the Rick Moranis part more than up to the task. The final fifteen minutes is as satisfying a cinematic reunion time that I can remember. Loved the movie.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised when Disney rears up and seizes my heart with one of their animated flicks but they did it again. Encanto is a big, yet very small movie that sears the value of family into its viewers. As the father of a couple Latinos I loved the effort to show how intrinsic the sense of family is to the Hispanic culture. The story revolves around a family outsider who is the only one in her family without designated magical powers. She is the key to saving the day. Obviously, this is a Disney movie, just prepare to get your heart stolen again.

Blissful State

I believe I can say without hazarding contradiction that the pub crawl returned in spectacular fashion this past Saturday. After a meager 2020, 2021 scored yet another victory with an extraordinary birthday pub crawl back in my hometown. While the usual suspects were out in full force, we were joined for the first time by the Pittsburgh College Roommate who played hooky from his duties as a minor celebrity to join us common folks for an afternoon of adult beverages and some serious laughter.

Post Crawl - Keene Friend, Myself & Pittsburgh Roommate
One of the keys to success for this annual afternoon of excess in the base of a solid lunch. Yet another tradition has sprung up over the past few years designating 5 Guys as the pre-crawl lunch location. While I never turn a blind eye to a burger, 5 Guys also means we are assured we can get in and out in timely fashion in order to make, in Army parlance, LD time, for the crawl. (Note for civilians - that means Line of Departure time, a critical time in attack planning). At any rate, after link up with Keene Friend and my Favorite Son, we arrived at 5 Guys and were shortly thereafter joined by the Cantankerous One.

Pre-Crawl Lunch at 5 Guys with Cousins, Son
and the Cantankerous One
Earlier in the week I had to tell my cousin that we wouldn’t be making the trip up to her house for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner due to granddaughter Covid concerns. Apparently, they heard through the grapevine (Frail Deeds) that I would be in Keene for the crawl. They volunteered to stop by 5 Guys to get the day off to a great start. I hadn’t seen them since Thanksgiving 2019 so there was a bit of catching up to do around hamburger destruction activities. I was so touched they made the effort. Great Aunt planned on being there also but fell victim to her own complete, well documented, lack of timeliness. As we were wrapping up lunch, she and Soxfather were just passing Fitchburg.

Cobblestone
We made LD time, arriving at the Cobblestone Pub precisely 2 minutes before the appointed hour of 1pm and high school classmates shortly began arriving. In short order we had a very fun group assembled. I set a new record by spilling my very first beer on myself. That usually has to wait for the third or fourth stop on the crawl; it was a portent of things to come. Kindergarten Friend, our usual Keene pub ambassador, was playing nursemaid to his wife after a knee replacement operation earlier in the week, but he snuck away to join us for a couple stops. The tardy Rhode Island couple also made their grand, delayed entrance here. Due to past years of broken promises we all had been giving the Pittsburgh College Roommate an inordinate amount of guff, disbelieving he would actually show, even after he sent us a picture from Cobblestone at 730am that morning. I complimented him on his photo shopping ability. He was rushing around the area trying to accomplish hometown return requirements as well as pay tribute to a departed friend so he was a little late arriving at Cobblestone. He was rightfully greeted as a returning hero when he did walk in.

Lab 'n Lager
We took a more leisurely pace this year since there was a reduced number of bars involved. We moved across the street at the Lab ‘n Lager where we immediately seized control of our usual window seat. There was a youngish couple who moved across the bar away from us and later came by to apologize, saying this was their first time out since the pandemic began and were a little freaked out at the size of our group, not to mention our activity. Have booster shot, will travel.

Kilkenny's
Our journey continued down Main Street and bagged a right down the alley to the Kilkenny Pub where we set up shop in the dart board end of this venerable establishment. More high school classmates joined us although we did lose one of our number. He planned on rejoining us at the next bar but explained he had ben banned for life from Kilkenny’s. He claimed it was due to an incident where he wasn’t buying enough beer while playing pool. None of us thought this reached the permanent exile point and he eventually admitted to threatening to beat up the manager as well. We had a very good time at Kilkenny’s despite his absence although my Favorite Son dominated everybody in darts. I found it interesting to see the advancing effects of demon alcohol on my targeting ability.

Pour House

Family End of Table at Pour House
The next and last official stop on the crawl was the Pour House at the head of the square. I was instantly placed in possession of a BFB, an acronym for a very large beer (you figure it out). We were able to spread out and truly enjoy the comradery. It almost seemed like the floor tilted in our direction as the rest of the much younger crowd seemed stunned at the bunch of gray-haired patrons seemed to be having the best time of anybody in the bar. At some point a couple very generous members of the groups arranged for a massive amount of food to show up which had a very short shelf life. We actually finished up a little later than prior crawls, even though we patronized fewer bars, a benefit of the slower pace with more time in each pub.

Interesting Warning Sign at Pour House

Yes, That is Cantankerous Friend
Careful not to Violate Warning
In the early evening we declared victory and invited everybody to Penuche’s Ale House, which was finally open, for the official after party. There was no way a Keene Pub Crawl could not involve Penuche’s. My Kindergarten Classmate rejoined us at this point as we wound down from the very fun day. My Favorite Panamanian showed up for the first time in the crawl, having completed her rampage through the local tax free shopping grounds. The group was still fairly prodigious in size and Keene Friend was getting a little nervous that his house, our next stop, could hold everybody but his fears turned out to be unwarranted. We ended the night at his house for more beverages and a birthday cake for Pittsburgh College Roommate and myself. I armed myself with Bonecrusher for that crucial first cut. I’m not sure it was smart to arm me with this length of steel after so many beers but everybody survived.

Penuche's After Party
On the way to Penuche’s, I checked into our hotel on Main Street. As usual I didnt want the day to end but, as with most nearly perfect days, it flew by. We demolished too much pizza and birthday cake until almost 11 o’clock which is well after Keene Friend’s usual bedtime but he was more than game. Taking pity on Keene Friend, my Favorite Panamanian bundled both my son and I into the car and drove us to our hotels. Like I said, almost a perfect day, due directly to the fantastic people I was blessed to spend it with. Blissful state, indeed. I owe a heartfelt thank you to all who showed up and their loved ones who put up with whatever the aftermath brought.
