Trying to See Him

Yesterday was spent in a vain attempts to connect with our son in law on his birthday as my wife and I were repeatedly thwarted by his busy schedule and our movie date.  My daughter was apparently squiring him around Big Apple environs doing justice to his day.  We were reduced to a fairly sloppy rendition of Happy Birthday on his answering machine.

He did make the mistake of posting a picture of himself at a very young age online which I promptly “acquired” for Frail Deeds.  It was very cool seeing him at such a young age, before we ever knew him.

I got to spend three delightful hours with the citizenry of Worcester down at the new bus hub yesterday.  The drivers helpfully kept pointing me out as one of the bosses.  This meant I was bombarded suggestions ranging from blowing the new place up with C-4 (unlikely) to  hovercraft as new buses (creative) to free bus fares for all (even more unlikely).  At least I got to spend the time in the shade instead of the city hall plaza frying pan.

I finally started to attack the rain soaked mulch mountain that’s been sitting in my driveway for over a week.  I learned that rain soaked mulch is much heavier than dry mulch – who knew!  Hopefully by the end of the week I’ll have the driveway back.

Since there are two movies worth checking out this week my wife and I expanded the date night to two nights.  Last night we went to see Now You See Me which was much better than I had been hearing.  It boasts a very engaging cast as well as a very interesting plot that moves right along.  It involves a set of four magicians who are seemingly doing completely impossible things including robbing a Paris bank from a Las Vegas casino.  There were circles within circles and a very nice twist in the end that was pretty obvious but still enjoyable.
Extremely Enjoyable
Jesse Isenberg is definitely moving beyond his typical geek roles and Isla Fisher is her usual awesome (in everything except off screen marital choices).  Morgan Freeman plays a former magician who debunks magical tricks which provides some of the most fascinating scenes in the movie.  It was neat to see two older actors like Freeman and Caine on the screen with young talent like Eisenberg, Fisher, and the peerless Mark Ruffalo who all more than held their own.

Finally returning to home and another vain attempt to connect with the elusive son in law I sat down to watch the Bruins annihilate the supposedly much superior Pittsburgh team, in Pittsburgh.  This Penguins team reminds me a lot of the Vancouver team a couple years ago, a lot of flash but lacking in heart.  The workmanlike Bruins are the perfect team to expose that weakness.  The Penguins got down in the score and basically quit.
