Remote Meltdown

FBR in Playground Mode

I’m surprised my television remote is not a puddle of melted slag after last night’s workout. Somehow I was able to watch both the Red Sox playoff game and the Patriots’ game without missing a key play in either. I relied on a dizzying display of TV remote manipulation that would have impressed Liberace (for his piano playing of course you dirty minded SOBs). It also helped to have the glacial pace baseball is now played at. I could see a whole series of downs of the football game and return to the baseball game to find the same batter up. Baseball should take note of how badly they compare when seasons overlap as to why they’re losing a whole generation of viewers.
Both games were incredibly exciting with the Red Sox responding as they have all year long when you think they’re ready to fold. They survived a David Price start and a Craig Kimbrell finish to tie up their series with the world champs. The Patriots game against a very good Kansas City team was heartstoppingly exciting. The Patriots played one half of defense which was a half more than the previously undefeated Chiefs did. When Brady got the ball back with 3 minutes left in a tie game I felt almost serene. It’s hard to feel good about the second half defense but a win is a win even it was 43-40.
Man Cave Indignities
I watched the games in the midst of the indignity the Man Cave has been subjected to. I had to disassemble part of the set up in preparation for the plumber to excavate into the walls since that’s where the needed connections are. Oh yeah, we now have a plumber who starts work today. It was a fairly quiet weekend as I tried to get my Favorite Panamanian to rest and recover from her pneumonia. I was moderately successfully but she did break free to drag me to a shopping expedition on Sunday for a brief time. We were buying a toilet for the new master bath and I didn’t know there were so many options. Like any good infantryman I’m happy just having a toilet, any toilet, but my wife was better versed in the options available. She was very impressed with one that bragged you could flush a bucket of golf balls down it. I told her it was unlikely we would need that capability and we eventually settled on one that was much heavier than it looked. I, of course, said it would be no problem lifting into and out of the car (damned male pride).

We spoke with both granddaughters over the weekend. The BRS is rounding back into shape after her own bout with a cold. She was back into hyper-mobility mode which had both my son and Riggins on the run. My son is nearing the end of his wall building project and looked a little worse for the wear. I felt bad I hadn’t been able to get up there to help again but the last thing they needed was a sick Panamanian in the house.
Possibly the 1000th FBR Viewing of the Littlest Mermaid
The FBR was up to her usual hijinks over the weekend with gymnastics and playground domination. The attached video keeps making me smile. She was at her friend’s house and modeled some sort of costume which included a couple of her patented dance moves. Last night she kept stealing her mother’s IPad while we were talking and hiding us in the ball tent. I’d like to think she thought of it as a game.
Since my wife was feeling better we took in a movie, A Star is Born. This was much better than I expected. I think this is the first time I’d ever seen Lady Gaga without a mountain of strange makeup and/or dead animal flesh covering her. She’s very, very good and there is no denying the voice which is incredible. This was Bradley Cooper’s first directorial film and he also stars as the inevitably tragic major star who discovers the plucky struggling artist and falls in love. This was so much better than the Streisand effort in the 1970s as Cooper is tone perfect and the scenes between him and Sam Elliott who plays his much older brother just crackle. There is undeniable chemistry between Gaga and Cooper as well which is integral to the story. Even though you know where it’s headed after the prior three versions this was still wildly entertaining. Gaga should wear less makeup as she has screen presence to spare and more than held her own with the top notch actor she was on screen with.
