Movie Day

My Wife with Virginia Musquetera and Sister

I found myself with an entire day totally unsupervised due to my Favorite Panamanian’s notable absence for her musquetera reunion. I did have options as Great Aunt wanted me to come down to Rhode Island for Red Zone and dinner but I had too much to do here and the nearby cinema was issuing its siren call as well. After grocery shopping and laundry I made a bee line for the movies and knocked out two, see below. Between movies I prepared my lunches for the week. Readers of Frail Deeds will remember my wife’s grilling debacle of a couple weeks ago where some fabulous steaks met their ignominious demise. I scored a bunch of dead animal flesh at the grocery store which I covered the grill with between movies. I’m sure some of the neighbors thought I was having some sort of platoon showing up to consume it all.

My wife continued her sojourn in Virginia where the Latin Mafia made an appearance at a local festival. While I miss her more than I will admit, even to myself, I can tell how much she is enjoying her time with the ladies who’ve evolved to be her stateside sisters. An Army spouse has to acquire a surrogate extended family on the fly and my wife did a great job at that. She and I both think of the good friends we made while serving as family even if we haven’t seen or spoke to them for years.

I checked in on both granddaughters yesterday. The BRS is still rangering her way through her cold. My son emplaced another whole pallet of stones to complete the front wall he and I worked on last week. He promised to send me a picture but sick babies tend to distract. The FBR steadfastly refused to speak to me on the phone yesterday (how the mighty have fallen). She was playing catch with Wingman so I understood the refusal.
The first movie I went to see was Venom. I’m blissfully unaware of the Spiderman mythology surrounding this character which may or may not have helped. It started fairly slowly and initially the Eddie Brock character is really hard to root for. It’s a tribute to Tom Hardy that he eventually wins you over despite no discernible reason for doing so. For me the movie takes off once Brock is infected with the alien parasite that transforms him into Venom. The internal monologue between Brock and Venom is at times hilarious. This wasn’t up to Marvel’s usual standard but it was a lot of fun as Venom careens around San Francisco battling the inevitable evil corporation. Michelle Williams is a little underutilized but this movie belongs to Hardy and he redeems the focus. A very fun ride that never takes itself too seriously.
Later I went to see Lizzie, yet another take on the infamous Lizzie Borden drama. My mother always used to kid around, saying “Lizzie Borden gave her father 40 whacks etc. etc.” While I’m reasonably well informed of the facts surrounding the infamous double murder this movie offered an interesting take, focusing on the relationship between Lizzie and the family’s Irish maid, Bridget Sullivan. The plot offers a poignant look at the pressure exerted on the spinster Lizzie and women in general during Victorian times. It doesn’t overly demonize the murder victims but no one will bemoan the father’s demise, not a nice man. The movie belongs to Chloe Sevigny as an icy Lizzie and Kristen Stewart as Sullivan. Women should not be marginalized to the point of feeling irrelevant, even during Victorian times. That is done at extreme peril even when thought defenseless.
