Routinicity and P.E.D. Cinema

A sense of normalcy is returning to the casa and all reports emanating from the tropics indicate Panama survived the return of the PanaGals.  Getting back to the early morning and evening routines around the house are akin to putting a comfortable sweatshirt back on but at the same time there’s a haunting sense of loss.  The past few weeks were so much fun seeing friends, family, the wedding (of course), and the inexhaustible entertainment of hosting the PanaGals.

Buddy’s gastric system seems to be on the mend as well.  He pushed his adorability to unseen levels to beg food from unsuspecting amateurs, not used to resisting his ploys.  My wife emerged from her 24 hour recovery period and was feeling well enough to comment (somewhat tartly) about my lack of fastidiousness.  As stated above, the routines are back in place.

My wife does feel the vacuum of departed Latinas sharply though.  To mitigate those emotions she’s taken to importing house guests this week.  Tonight the daughter of the Virginia Musquetera will be stopping by to spend the night on her way to a weekend wedding further north.  Tomorrow the Maine Musquetera herself will put in an appearance (she’ll probably be late).  She will be coming back north after dropping her daughter off for the first time at college in Pennsylvania.  I’m sure emotions will be expressed.
One of our reinstated routines was last night’s date night which involved that noted thespian troop performing in Expendables 3.  This movie was a wretched attempt at moving the franchise into a younger generation.  I was surprised that they chose to veer away from the entertaining by-play between the aged mercenaries to play to a non-memorable group of youngsters.  Even the aggressive use of performance enhancing drugs cannot hide the onslaught of time on Stallone and Schwarzenegger although it was good to see Mel Gibson back at work as a passable villain.  Even Harrison Ford showed up for some unknown reason but at least he had the class to look slightly embarrassed.

The earlier two movies were entertaining if cartoonish.  The new director decided to go all the way into cartoonish and completely forgot to be entertaining.  Stallone also wrote this movie which was a surprise since he’s still a pretty good writer, if not judged by this.  The biggest failures were the young Expendables who dropped the baton which was being lazily handed to them by the seniors.
