Sinew on Display

Yesterday was certainly a see saw days as the target of many of my rants – the national television news organizations, covered themselves in glory once again.  In the rush to be the first to report anything various national news organizations loudly proclaimed the arrest or imminent arrest of the cowards who bombed the marathon.  Of course they were completely wrong but at least they were the first to be wrong.
We had a saying in the infantry, “All initial reports are wrong”.  In other words never trust the first word coming out of a situation because it is usually out of context that a later and more comprehensive report will bring.  I got the impression the news media were being toyed with by law enforcement “sources”; either for their own amusement or to generate a response from a suspect.  In any case – fun to watch, not.

Turning to things that were fun to watch last night the revamped, at least attitude wise, Boston Red Sox continued to win.  This is exactly the kind of game they would not have won last year.  Their #6 starter up against the other team’s #1 and a guy who has dominated the Sox.  Old friend Alfredo Aceves (my son’s favorite player) gave the Sox five quality innings and didn’t give up his obligatory dingers until the Sox were comfortably ahead.  For all that’s been written about the moves the Sox made over the winter, the best one seems to be the signing of the flying Hawaiian, Shane Victorino, who stamped himself all over last night’s win.

While my wife and I were watching the game, our daughter, recovering from a very bad cold, called from New York to tell me about a special moment at the Bruins game.  In this age of instant information, less than twenty minutes after the actual event, my daughter in New York sent me the video to something taking place in Boston that she only learned about from a friend.  We live in an amazing era.  Speaking of amazing – watch the video she sent:
The People’s Republic of Massachusetts has a rightfully earned reputation of being a hotbed of socialism but underneath all of that is bone deep patriotism and pride in being Americans. It really is an area of the country you do not want to mess with.  Even though the public dialogue is usually dominated by the bleeding hearts there is real sinew here.  Today I’m a proud New Englander.
