Wasted, Good, Bad

Yesterday was brimming with sports news here in New England. Not only did the Bruins exact the needed price of a wasted year by summarily executing the general manager for his sins but here were moving tributes to the second anniversary of the marathon bombings.  There were some additional unwelcome explosions in Fenway as the Nationals finally showed up for a game and pummeled the Sox as well.
The big news however was the conviction of former Patriot Aaron Hernandez on murder charges. I was worried about the trial because the judge was a typical defense leaning Massachusetts hack who excluded some of the most damning evidence against Hernandez. The jury saw enough though in the mountain of circumstantial evidence to convict. The judge’s rulings will now make the expected appeal more likely to fail. The judge actually brought the jury together after the verdict and explained all the evidence she excluded and the jury made the point of how this confirmed in their minds the verdict.

The trial exposed the complete waste of oxygen Hernandez was/is. The defense claimed his buddies did the deed, while he stood by horrified, was given lie by his own security video which shows him allowing these two nefarious characters play with his baby daughter shortly after the murder. I was struck again by what a wasted life this young man engaged in. A poor kid blessed with immense talent who just signed a forty million dollar contract that would have set him and his family up for life threw it all away because he couldn’t leave the thug life behind.
Magic Castle
Inside the Castle Wingman and Cali-daughter on the Left Where
They Met This Guy
My wife and I were lucky enough to talk with both of our far flung progeny last night although the news related by each hit the exact opposite end of the excellence spectrum. First the very good news from Cali-daughter and Wingman who related they just secured a weeklong stay in Maui in May. They had looked at flying to Bermuda to link up with the rest of us but that grew price prohibitive. So at least they’ll get some long overdue quality time with each other and I’m told Maui can be a nice place to visit. In a true la la land coincidence they were invited to an event a couple nights ago at the Magic Castle which is a good thing I guess. While there, they ran into none other than Raylan Givens himself when Timothy Olyphant walked by. You’ll recall I was waxing if not poetic at least effusive about Marshal Givens only yesterday in this blog.

Lest welcome news emanated from my favorite son who reported the appraisal for the house they’re trying to buy came in ridiculously low which will be a problem with the mortgage lender. He sounded a little down but determined to right the injustice. His very capable real estate agent in wading into the fray although this may delay their closing date. I know it sounds weird but I feel confident they’ll overcome this issue; they’re fated to have that house.
