One Game

I’m repeating my standard mantra of each spring when my beloved Red Sox return to the field. It’s only one game….It’s only one game…..It’s only one game. Still, it’s hard not to get excited about yesterday’s unveiling of the 2015 edition of the Bosox. A dominant pitching performance and five home runs enroute to an 8-0 win germinates that secret lust every member of Red Sox nation harbors deep down this year: Worst (2012) to first (2013) to worst (2014) to first (2015?)
Granted yesterday win came against a team that has the potential to be historically bad but I liked what I saw. Pedroia who’s the heart and soul of the team looks healthy and extremely hungry while the Latin players seem to have bought into Ortiz’ pied piper conga line.
If nothing else the start of the baseball season ends the worst time of the year sports-wise following the Super Bowl. The Bruins devolved into a frustrating team to follow and the NBA remains eminently unwatchable. March Madness arrived over the past two weeks to rescue the end of this annual nadir.
My wife and I watched last night’s college championship game together. We didn’t really care about which team won but it’s so fun to watch these young guys who still care before they receive their required NBA lobotomies. It’s a reminder of what a beautiful sport basketball can be; especially compared to the ludicrous product the NBA has evolved to.

The game was watched in spurts because there seemed to be a commercial break very two to three minutes of game action.
We used the numerous breaks to switch between two movies, first the Upside of Anger which has some truly great lines; especially when Costner and Allen are on the screen together. When that finished we picked up the old Burton-Taylor classic Cleopatra. It was kind of jarring to go from game action to the battle of Actium but it turned out to be a lot of fun; mostly from garnering my wife’s insights into Republican Roman history.
