Masking Variety

One of the things I enjoy now that I’m back in the pool, despite all the pandemic hoops I have to jump through, is the time spent day dreaming. I have to let my mind wander while I’m swimming laps because if I focus on how much my body is complaining about the exercise I would probably sink to the bottom. Today’s mental journey had me considering the inevitability of change. One of the things I’ve noticed about getting old is the transitory nature of the world.
FBR With her Abuela Created Doggie Mask
When you’re growing up some things in life seem carved in granite and will never change. For example, I don’t believe there is a single grocery store in my hometown from my youth that is currently operating. I know that seems trivial but it’s an indicator of how much life does change. How many restaurants are still around from that time; does anyone remember Howard Johnson’s? The environment you grow up with becomes a touchstone with which you compare and experience the inevitable changes. I posted pictures yesterday of the aunts and uncles I revered as a youngster and thought of the change they experienced. They all lived through the Great Depression, World War 2, and the 60’s. My grandparents saw the instruction of the automobile, telephone, and air flight, not to mention two world wars.
Some the Other Masks She has Created
I think we’re now living through a time that will be remembered for the bone deep changes it will inflict upon us. The world that will emerge from the pandemic will be fundamentally changed and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I do, at times, feel this pandemic was specifically aimed at me since movie theaters and bars were early victims, but I digress. That being said, I haven’t lost my optimism about our ability to learn and prosper despite the challenges. While autocratic governments are better able to coerce their people into beating the virus we’ll eventually overcome this. If nothing else the pandemic has demonstrated Trump’s abject absence of a scintilla of leadership ability; so, there’s that.
The Giraffe Mask
I want to take this opportunity to recognize my Favorite Panamanian for her efforts during the pandemic. She was and still is terrified of the virus. She’s only now starting to leave the house and no longer requires that I divest my work clothes in the garage each day. She turned her not inconsiderable energy towards helping others. This doesn’t surprise anyone who knows her. She started out be creating some face masks for her and I. She quickly expanded that to our children and their friends. Over the past few months I’ve come up to our bedroom to find her burning the midnight oil continuing the work on the dozens of masks she’s created.
She's Also Nursed Her Vast Garden Complex Diligently
She received some special orders from the FBR. The FBR wanted dog and giraffe styled face masks. Since we are incapable of denying our granddaughters anything my Favorite Panamanian searched the internet for patterns and eventually created the requested masks. The FBR already has her dog mask and the giraffe one is heading her way as I write this. I remain in awe of the dedication and giving spirit my wife has demonstrated with her desire to help others. She can be a real pain in the ass about enforcing quarantine rules but I know she has the very best intentions in her overflowing heart. She’s my pandemic hero and the reason for my optimism that we’ll get through this. Changed, but that’s not scary.
