Roots and Origins

My Smorgasbord of a Wife
Heavy on discussions of pedigrees today, both personal and cinematic, which was fascinating on both levels. We received the DNA results back for my wife which were a lot more diverse than my own. There was some unsurprising heritage – a large percentage of Native American and the Iberian Peninsula as well as Southern Europe. The biggest surprise was a healthy ratio from Great Britain which astonished even her - she’s part gringo! The most fascinating part of the results were the very low percentages which trace ancestors hundreds of years in the past. She had some African roots that must have migrated up the coast to medieval Spain as well as a dose of Arab (Northern Africa and Middle East) that can probably be laid at the feet of the Moorish invaders of Spain back in the Dark Ages. She also sports miniscule amounts of European Jewish and Scandinavian (damned Vikings certainly got around) blood as well as a very little bit of Polynesia. Panama certainly is the crossroads of the world.

I'm Very Interesting

Two Raspberry Salute
I went to see Professor Marston and the Wonder Women last night. This was a fascinating look at the backstory for the inventor of Wonder Woman. The movie was much more about the wonder women who surrounded Marston which was an excellent choice because Rebecca Hall is riveting. She towers over the movie as Marston’s official wife. She’s simultaneously brilliant, acerbic, vulnerable, and dominating. This movie might be a little kinky for Oscar but her performance deserves recognition – the very best I’ve seen so far this year. The male lead and the other actress fade into the background whenever Hall is on screen. The story is compelling as the two women and the professor explore a polyamorous relationship in spite of the Puritanical times on the mid-1900s. It’s all the more interesting in that most of it is true. It’s an eloquent ode to the strictures that kept (keep) women from reaching their full potential. They may have tried for too long an arc of time but this movie is worth seeing for Ms. Hall’s fascinating portrayal.

The Bad Cinema project count rises to #36 out of 100, with Galaxy Invader, so bad it truly defies description.
