Poolside Reminiscing, Woosox and Free Hair

Today marks the last full day with a granddaughter in residence. Tomorrow the FBR will welcome her parents who are coming to retrieve her. While her leaving is a bit of a downer (cancel that – a huge downer), at least we’ll have not only her parents but my son’s family, Great Aunt, the Keene Friend and the Cantankerous Friend with us tomorrow. We’re having the annual Family Fantasy Football draft on Deckzilla for the second straight year. This promises to be fun because we’ll be welcoming the PCR to the league this year although he’ll be drafting remotely from Pittsburgh. A full couple days to wind down the week with the FBR.

Yesterday we traveled once again to spend the day at our friend’s large house and pool in Rhode Island. The FBR is extremely aquatically inclined and I was required to spend the time in the pool with her since there weren’t any cousins available this time out. I spent some time teaching her how to breath while perfecting her crawl stroke. She was a huge fan of the Young Woman and the Sea movie which featured this and was very receptive to instruction (a deviation from her usual attitude). I was also required to launch her over my shoulder, she’s either getting much heavier or I’m getting weaker.

Our hosts prepared a fantastic chicken dinner which kept the FBR out of the pool for a short time. As soon as she polished her lunch off, she was out on the trampoline and then a sand box. Our hosts brought out some old photos that were very funny. They captured our hosts trip to visit us in Hawaii. I was deployed to the Middle East during the time so I wasn’t included in the photo display. We’ve always said the FBR is the spitting image of her mom at the same age. These photos were from that time. We called the FBR over and asked her if she remembered meeting our hosts in Hawaii and showed her the pictures featuring her mom. She was confused because she honestly thought the pictures were of herself, at least until we all started laughing.

Upon our return to Worcester the FBR and I prepared to head out again as we were going to a WooSox game. The FBR is a huge baseball (and Red Sox) fan and was very excited about the outing. She said she wasn’t going on the Polar Park playground since she acquired a cut last year there that required a bunch of stitches to close. She was, however, all in on the variety of snacks available. We had downed the following by the fifth inning: hotdogs, popcorn, ice cream and cotton candy. Between every inning the Polar Park announcer had events planned where they would scan the audience and show patrons on the big screen. The FBR was determined to appear there before the end of the game, dancing her heart out a couple times. All her attempts were unsuccessful but I enjoyed the time watching her enjoy the atmosphere.

Today saw a trip to my Favorite Panamanian’s hair dresser to get the FBR a pre-school days haircut. Since my wife still can’t drive the car with her bum knee I was designated as the official escort. I waited in the parking lot to read while they went in. In a surprisingly short time they emerged with a fabulous new doo and a story to tell. Luigi, the famous hair dresser, was so charmed by the FBR that he refused payment for the haircut. It’s how the FBR rolls. I’m really going to miss having a granddaughter in residence.

One movie fell in the A-Z watch, a keeper: Lethal Weapon 4, a series that definitely ran out of steam here, keeping because part of series.
