Rejuvenating

So, a fairly mundane start of the week was rescued by none other than Great Aunt. She drove up for lunch and a movie yesterday which turned out to be a lot of fun for everyone. She grew up in the same house I did so she’d loved movies along with the rest of us. However, Soxfather wasn’t a big movie goer so Great Aunt’s movie ardor withered a bit over the years; replaced by the fundamentally fantastic life she had with Soxfather. We had lunch yesterday where we shared stories of that beloved sports writer and human extraordinaire. I’m so proud of my big sister for taking on all of the myriad duties required by his departure. She even battled some evil internet companies that would have made a certain Sears-hating mother of ours proud.

My Movie Buddies Yesterday
My favorite part of the day was seeing her reaction to the movie. As we walked out of the theater, she was marveling at how much fun it was to see a movie on the big screen again. I’ll try to educate her on the benefits of being retired and the attractiveness of those matinees where you can sometimes have the entire theater to yourself. It was a very good day where we got a chance to share Soxfather with each other again and Great Aunt rediscovered her love of the cinema.

Still Doing Hand Stands on the Keyboard
We saw Jurassic World, Dominion. This brings virtually all of the non-consumed characters from all the Jurassic movies together, including the very first with Sam Neill and Laura Dern. That might be a problematic as there were a lot of sub-plots competing with each other for attention. Each of the stories were compelling though and the action virtually non-stop. A kid and a dinosaur are kidnapped by the inevitable evil corporation which is also seeding bird sized locust herds on the planet, just in case the kidnapping wasn’t evil enough. The dinosaurs have evolved in the CGI world to where they’re not the stop and admire screen presence they used to be. They’re characters in themselves. My only reservation was the seeming acceptance of these apex predators as a normal part of life after the last movie. They kind of wish away what the real-world impact would be, I’m thinking helicopter gunships, but with the the Jurassic movies you forgive a lot. It is what it is supposed to be, a big, gnarly, epic sized, popcorn, summer movie, in all its glory. A great send off to the series.
