Bis-Abuela B-Day & State Crossing

We have a birthday girl today; my superb mother in law who also fills the role of bis-abuela (great-grandmother) to my granddaughters. She been restricted to her house since the onset of Pandemia as my wife’s family correctly cares for this family treasure. She usually comes to visit us for a couple months in the summer but once again Covid made that an unreasonable risk. Today we celebrate the lady who serves as the bedrock of my wife’s family.

Birthday Girl with her Twin Daughters
My Wife on the Right

I will always remember meeting her for the first time when my future wife and I presented our plan to be married to her at a Panama City restaurant. She was skeptical because she knew we’d only known each other for a short time. If she knew how short a time after I met my Favorite Panamanian when I proposed she would have been scandalized. Over the years I like to think I’ve won her over and I always look forward to her visits. That not just because my Favorite Panamanian has to behave when her mom is around either. She’s a gentle lady with a reserve of steel and she raised five incredible children, including my wife and her twin sister (which couldn’t have been easy). So happy birthday bis-abuela! She’s the same age as my own mother would have been so her birthdays also bring those memories.

I‘ve had a busy couple days. I had my pre-op appointment with my surgeon. He went over the procedure and what to expect. Since I’d read the book he recommended I didn’t have a lot of questions. They’ll have me up and walking on the night of the procedure and kicking me out of the hospital the next morning. My wife will also be able to visit me that day. Yesterday I was crisscrossing the state to visit a couple of properties of GMs that work for me. I went to the garden spots of Brockton and New Bedford. My route home took me through Providence, RI at rush hour (not for the faint of heart). In my recent forays into my ancestry I found I had a great grandfather (my mom’s grandfather) buried in New Bedford but that will have to wait for another visit.

Solo Mom-ing & a Lazy Wisteria

My thoughts and prayers are extended to my nothing less than fabulous daughter in law, the aptly named ABFA. Today she went back to work after maternity leave but that didn’t involve a change in scenery since her firm is still working from home in Pandemia. That doesn’t mean she didn’t experience an immense alteration to her environment. The BRS returned to day care a couple weeks ago but today was the day BR3 joined her sister. This marked the first time she and her mom would be apart for an entire day.

The Newly Solo Mom - The Incredible ABFA

She’s going to the same day care facility as her sister so the BRS was able to escort her sis to the front door. I know there were moments over the past few months when the ABFA longed for the silent house she is now undergoing and I also know she’s now regretting those feelings. We talked about it this past weekend and she was dreading not having her “tiny humans” around. Hang in there ABFA, they will come home this afternoon.

Day Care Sent ABFA This Picture Showing BR3 is Handling it Like a Champ

I handled another project at home yesterday. My wife acquired a wisteria plant back in the early summer. The plan was to have this voracious climber reach the top of Deckzilla, reminiscent of a home we lived in the late 1980s in D.C. Apparently, we got a lazy one because it balked at going above the seating rail. We tried to find a trellis but no one seemed to be selling them anymore. My wife then had the great idea that I build one.

Our New Trellis Above the Lazy Wisteria

I was enthusiastic because this isn’t something I’d done before and I have a grotesquely inflated opinion of my carpentry skills. I bought the wood but was a little hesitant to start until I consulted with my Favorite Panamanian. She, blessed with a sense of style I am completely bereft of, quickly pointed out how I should go about it. With this guidance in hand I actually got it done fairly quickly and truly enjoyed it, well, except for the thirteen times I dropped a screw between the floor planks. Now to get the wisteria on some growth hormones.

A Very Spline Weekend

It may be Labor Day but I am in the midst of dealing once again with granddaughter separation syndrome. I still hadn’t fully recovered from two weeks with the FBR when I got tag teamed over the past weekend by the BRS and BR3. Luckily both granddaughter elements called this morning to wish me a good morning which helped immensely. It was a very good weekend.

Very Happy Abuela!

Grandpa Also!

We kicked it off with a most welcome guest at First Friday ceremonies when Keene Friend stopped by. I’ve remarked before but it remains a fact that one of the most deleterious effects of life in Pandemia is the lack of basic human contact, like spending an evening with an old friend just talking; okay a few beers and dead animal flesh might have been involved as well. It was an excellent way to kick off the weekend.

BRS Giving Dad Pointers on Screen Removal

We set out early Saturday (not as early as I would have liked but I do travel with a Panamanian, but again, I digress). The stated mission for the weekend was to replace all of the screens in my Favorite Son’s house, that is, in addition to time spent with the granddaughters and their parental units. The BRS is at a very fun age where she was very excited to welcome us. I cringed as she ran pell-mell towards us across the driveway as I feared she would fall. Of course, she did, but as I picked her up she ignored her skinned knee to deliver a granddaughter hug which is one of the few sure fire cures for the Pandemia blues.

BR3 can now hold her head up and is becoming ever more engaged with the world. She seemed particularly fascinated with her abuela which made my Favorite Panamanian as happy as I’ve ever seen her.  The ABFA was particularly interested in my earlier success with my spline tool in replacing the window screens in our house and after seeing hers I completely understood. The sun and wind had rendered their window screens in tatters, much worse shape than ours had been.

The screens fell apart as we were taking them out. My son was psyched once he saw how easy the process was with the right tools, spline tool I’m looking at you. As when we built the retaining walls together I treasured the time spent over the weekend with my son working together on this simple task. The BRS was likewise intrigued and provided the necessary comic relief at times. She offered a puzzle break (what is it about puzzles and my granddaughters?) and kept trying to help. Since there were a variety of sharp tools involved that wasn’t possible. Although I did summon her to help blow out some of the dust which she took very seriously.

Pictures of a Very Happy Abuela and BR3

As inevitably happens when I’m working a DIY project I sustained a minor cut to the hand which the BRS quickly identified as requiring a band aid which she demanded to administer herself. Likewise, my son tripped on the stairs (flip flops and stairs remain a bad combination) and fell on his butt. The BRS administered another band aid to his lower back and pronounced him ready to return to work.

Of Course Hojaldras Were Involved

The ABFA was truly pleased with the results of our efforts and pronounced the house transformed. I experienced a similar reaction when I did our house, it’s amazing what a difference it makes. My Favorite Panamanian helped by trying, semi-successfully, to keep the granddaughters engaged. She made a cake (a very good cake but no one tell the keto monitors!) which the BRS helped decorate – lots of frosting. There was also a fashion show as the BRS modeled the large number of dresses her cousin sent north with us. She was a true fashion explosion.

My wife’s exertions with the granddaughters did not come without cost. In addition to the usual bone deep fatigue from trying to keep up with the energy on display she lost one of her favorite earrings. We think it was somewhere in the deep grass of the front yard where she and the BRS cavorted. This had us crawling around there on Sunday afternoon trying to find it. I went out for a second look after she told me how much they cost, nearly a quarter century ago. My son is going to rake the lawn today in hopes of finding it.

Happy BR3

And BRS

Nothing could dent the feelings of family that permeated the entire weekend. While my son and I accomplished a lot I don’t classify it as work since it was the rare opportunity to just spend time together.  My wife shared my contentment (except for the aforementioned earring) as she was able to get BR3 to coo on command by the time we left.

FBR With Abuela Created Mask at the Zoo

We had several very pointed Facetime calls with the FBR over the weekend who made it very clear that she wished she could be with us to share in the fun. She didn’t look entirely happy to see the BRS sitting in my lap. She’s had her own adventures over the weekend. Her parents surprised her with a visit to a local zoo. They signed up for a slot and the FBR couldn’t wait to tell us of all the animals she saw. She’s convinced the otters put on a special performance just for her.

With Wingman at Zoo

Another great weekend in the books and maybe, just maybe, September won’t be as grisly as I feared. I do now the very best medicine anyone could acquire is to spend time with family and friends to enjoy life instead of just sitting home and worrying about it. The less said about the Red Sox games my son and I watched together the better, but again, there’s that word, together. Medicinal, indeed.

Great Weekend Indeed!

Thanks in Great Part to the BRS

Piper Spotted

My Favorite Panamanian’s biggest concern about my semi-retirement was the impact my daytime presence in the house would have on her established routines. I have a tendency to suggest how certain things work better and I’m guessing she wasn’t looking for constructive criticism in any way, despite her belief in being the sun source of all knowledge (but I digress). She was therefore pleasantly surprised over the first month when that intrusion failed to materialize. I disappear down into the Man Cave and she’s had to come looking for me if she wants to chance interaction.

I will now explain why Wingman has seriously endangered the incipient balance we’ve achieved and become enemy number one in my wife’s eyes. While we were down in New Jersey, Wingman helped me update my new phone and loaded Spotify on it. I know this sounds harmless but the first thing I asked him was how do I find bagpipe music. He readily located an extensive playlist which I was summarily forbidden to play in any of my assembled family’s presence (despite their proven Scottish bloodlines).

I know this all sounds innocuous; now comes my contribution. The other day while down in the Man Cave I started playing the bagpipe music on my phone and an interesting icon popped up. The phone had located my nearby speakers for the television sound system. It asked me if I wanted to connect to and use those speakers. Anyone who has been to my house understands the wall shaking capability this sound system. Very shortly thereafter said walls were indeed quaking as my wife made a quick descent to the Man Cave to rescue the cats she thought I was strangling. She found me with a beatific smile on my face as my beloved bagpipe music inundated my environment. Let’s face it, the only way to listen to bagpipe music is to be engulfed by it. So, since I enjoy a certain amount of spousal immunity Wingman is the villain. Technology can be dangerous.

Today is of course the First Friday of the Week and will be properly recognized with another family Facetime call. I’ll miss Wingman’s pizza and the literal, jumping up and down excitement of the FBR for movie night. At least I have the weekend to look forward to which will include a trip north to my Favorite Son’s home and time with my other two granddaughters. My son says he’s been using my wife and I all week as a bribe with the BRS. She’s been told if she’s good and listens then we will visit, like anything short of axe murders would keep us away. Anyways, back to the pipers!

Excavations Begin

My September will be my 2020 of year 2020, if that makes any sense. I have four scheduled delves into my body by various medical authorities. We started off yesterday with the easiest of the four – a crown for one of my back teeth. There is, of course, no fun to be had when one enters the lair of the dentist but this went about as well and painless as possible. I was treated to the smell of pulverized tooth for about forty minutes so the experience was not without its drawbacks. They’re going to rush the permanent crown so they can get it into place before I’m hors de combat later in the month with the more serious of corporeal intrusions.

Speaking of 2020 it wouldn’t be complete without a swarm of cicadas descending. I’d never seen these prehistoric insects until living in Virginia during one of their 17 year emergences. For those of you who haven’t experienced this aspect of southern living – count yourself lucky. They’re huge, love to land on your head, and make enough noise to wake the dead. It was therefore with not a little bit of irritation that I discovered one of the beasts sunning itself on my flagpole yesterday. This must be another sign of global warming because I’d never heard of them this far north. 2020.

2020 cannot contend with my talented children though. My daughter informed us last night that all the hard work (it approached legendary levels during the pandemic) she's put in over the years at her company have been recognized. Her director level boss is departing at the end of the year and my daughter will be assigned her responsibilities. She joins her brother who will also receive an end of year promotion at his job. This, again, validates the dedicated and professional work he's done since moving to the new company a few years ago. I cannot possibly be prouder of both of them, but I'll keep trying. I’m starting to get into a routine with my own new job, although I hesitate to call it that. My extended time in the Man Cave each day has relieved my Favorite Panamanian of her gravest concerns about my intrusion into her daily routines. I’m also continuing the house projects that always seemed to get put off when I was working full time. This week I sealed the end of the driveway. Yesterday I stripped and painted the bulkhead doors leading into the basement. It was kind of cool not worrying about work responsibilities or trying to shoehorn it in at the end of the day.

Bulkhead Painted

ABFA Workout Partner

I get some more practice this weekend as I take my screen replacement technique north to my Favorite Son’s home. Spending time with him, the ABFA, as well as the BRS and BR3 will go a long way in assuaging the incipient depression from our return from our New Jersey stay. The BRS is assisting in the ABFA’s postpartum workout regime. The ABFA and her parents took the BRS to the beach on Monday and while there the BRS totally abandoned her usual stranger-danger stance. She decided to become a serial hugger which had the ABFA sprinting across the sand multiple times to preserve social distancing. Luckily, the ABFA, being such a great athlete, was more than up to the task. In other New Hampshire news BR3 turned over for the first time ever. She surprised herself and was a little concerned about the results of her efforts.

Our Wakeup Caller

The FBR is also assisting with our separation issues. She calls very morning, noon, and at dinner time. She gets upset if we are awake when she calls in the morning as she hopes to continue her stated critical mission task of waking up her grandparents. She had a great surprise yesterday when Wingman arranged a play date with one of her buddies. They had been socially distancing her for a couple weeks prior to our visit to protect us so it had been nearly a month since she could hang with her friends.

Still Miss the in Person Hugs
