Mafia Night Out

As you can see from the attached photos the Favorite Panamanian escaped birthday cake and cookie prep to enjoy a night out with the Panamanian mafia gals yesterday. The Neighborhood Mafioso invited her to join the gang as they took in a concert from a Latina trio that was playing in Worcester last night. She returned with rave reviews for not only the concert but the time spent with her friends.  She also purchased a couple books they were selling, as Wingman would say, as “merch”, aimed at helping young children learn Spanish. My Favorite Panamanian’s biggest, or I should say, one of her biggest, issues is that none of her grandchildren speak Spanish. Yet. Every time she tries to engage them, they run away (I know the feeling). The FBR and BRS are both showing small indications that they would like to learn so these books may come in handy.

The Mafia Last Evening
It seems as if we’ve been on a roller coaster since our return from Panama, a lot of that involving medical appointments delayed until our return. On that subject, I had my six-month dental cleaning and check up yesterday. My well-endowed dental hygienist took out the big tools (dental) to clean the accumulated grime. I wore my running cap so she wouldn’t have to stare at my scalp excavations while doing her own digging. We have a new dentist and I swear he looks like a high school kid but that could be because of the relative distance, chronologically, between us. I also set up an appointment with the physical therapist to deal with the right foot problem. I guess medical science is still marveling that I’ve gotten through all these years, and an Army career, with arches this high. Civilians!

Of Course Dinner was Involved

At the Concert Venue
You’ll notice from the A-Z watch that I had a lot of time on my hands over the past couple days. It rained all day yesterday and I mentioned that the Favorite Panamanian was out all last night (so, no chick flicks in the Man Cave!). Since the Red Sox were doing their usual swoon against Tampa Bay, it was movie time. As I look at the movie library shelves, I think am about at the exact half way point in this effort. Of course this doesn’t include the other shelves which include everything from “v” onwards, the James Bond collection, the Marvel movies, the DC movies, and assorted other favorites. The march goes on. It's shaping up to be an epic weekend. We’re going to a church dance tonight (guess whose idea that was) that my Favorite Panamanian volunteered to set up. Tomorrow morning we head up to New Hampshire to celebrate BR3’s 4th birthday. We’ll deliver the bike I put together as well as yet another fantastic cake my wife has created to birthday girl specifications. Time to get psyched!

We went to see The Fall Guy earlier in the week. This is a very enjoyable movie which shouldn’t be a problem but I guess I was expecting more of a punch, considering the cast. As it is, it is a devoted love letter to the Hollywood stuntman and the stunts, obviously not CGIed are truly epic. You would think the Blunt-Gosling pairing would be magic. They’re both very good in this, especially Gosling. He was back in the well remembered and loved type personae of The Nice Guys. He’s semi-bumbling but highly effective stunt man trying to win back Blunt’s love. There’s also a murder mystery involving the movie within the movie’s biggest star. I expected to be blown away and while I really enjoyed the movie I wasn’t. Considering the director’s past films I thought there would be non-stop action and a thrilling finale. The finale was awesome but the first part of the movie dragged a bit. Still a solid start to 2024’s summer movie season.

Today’s weigh-in, 18 pounds lost towards 25-pound goal. The last ten is putting up a fight.

In my A-Z watch, six fell since I last posted, five keepers: Dune Part 2 (new addition), a sequel better than the original, awesome final battle; In Time, quirky sci fi with time and or lack of it as the primary motivation in life; Into the Blue, really bad beach melodrama, but then there’s that Jessica Alba bikini, had to keep it; The Invisible Man, Elisabeth Moss adding real texture to a riveting horror story; I Robot, back when Will Smith could carry a movie effortlessly; and Ironclad, thought I would love this medieval sword adventure and it had Kate Mara, but, just a bad movie - jettison.

Thwarted

It’s been a hectic couple of days combined with recovering from intense granddaughter exposure, always physically draining while emotionally fulfilling. I think I’ve finally made it through changing all the automatic pay situations I had for the compromised credit card. I’m sure there’s a couple outliers out there but I was struck by how many security layers have been installed since the last time I had to do this. It was so difficult to prove I was who I said I was, God forbid trying to talk with a life person. I think AI is showing definite signs of bias against real humans. I had my latest follow-up with the dermatologist (or he who likes to delve as he is known around here) on Monday where I hoped to get cleared for swimming. He described the skin graft as “healing wonderfully” so my hopes were high. They came crashing down when he said no swimming until June. I was bummed but then realized we’re only a couple weeks from June (how is that even possible!).

The Birthday Girl
Yesterday was BR3’s 4th birthday. We get to celebrate it this weekend up in New Hampshire. My Favorite Panamanian and I got her on Facetime last evening and sang her happy birthday. I consider it definite progress that she didn’t run shrieking from the room this time when she heard our singing. Last week when she heard she would have to give up her nighttime “binky” (pacifier) since she would be a “big girl”, she boldly declared that she didn’t want to grow up and wanted to cancel her birthday. Ahh, if it was only that easy. She remains a definite character with an abundance of personality. Since she can’t stop the growing progress, I’m so excited to see the young lady I’m sure she’ll develop into. It should be dramatic, to say the least.

The lack of swimming definitely puts a crimp in my weight loss effort. I was counting on adding that to my repertoire this week to assist with the final ten pounds. Now it looks like the stationary bike will pay the price. Outside of my bike time I’ve devoted a lot of time to the Man Cave and not only because of the movie library residing there. Both the Bruins and the Celtics are in the playoffs and the Sox aren’t as dismally bad as predicted. Most of the time has been spent in the office annex of the cave though as I endeavored to renew my passport along with the credit card quest. The passport expires when I’m down in Panama next year and we also have some other international traveling this year in which I’ll need it. High adventure.

Today’s weigh-in, 16 pounds lost towards 25-pound goal. As predicted, the last ten will be a lot slower.

In my A-Z watch, four fell since I last posted, all keepers, Insidious, second scariest movie ever made, red demon sudden appearance still freaks me out (see photo) even though I know it’s coming; The Intern, DeNiro’s best movie in a long while, great chemistry with Hathaway; The Internship, Vaughn and Wilson together, always a hoot, funny send up of generation gap; and Interstellar, so good, hard science fiction with immense heart.

Mommified

I slept so well last night. I believe it was a combination of enduring another one of those near perfect family weekends and chasing granddaughters around. Probably more of the latter. It still confounds me that these little creatures can extract so much vigor from me; they are energy vampires (but in the best way possible). The official Mother’s Day celebration weekend kicked off Friday with the arrival of the New Jersy bunch. The FBR’s first question was predictably when her cousins would be arriving. My daughter’s family arrived in time for the First Friday Family Facetime call which was only notable for a vicious assault on my person by my Favorite Panamanian. I was sitting in front the screen and she was standing behind me when I made some sort of wise ass remark about her (as I am wont to do). She responded by giving me a sharp rap on the top of the head (as she is wont to do). She and the entire family gasped when they realized I still had the surgery incision healing on the impact point. She felt so bad that I decided not to punish her by saying it hurt (it did a little). My son, for some reason, seem to take a lot of pleasure in the action, laughing almost uncontrollably.

Official Fam Picture on Sunday
Saturday was the main event of the weekend as we were celebrating Mother’s Day a early since the New Jersey bunch had to depart Sunday morning. My son’s family, as well as Great Aunt, Keene Friend, and the ABFA’s parents were joining us. I tried a new tact when the FBR’s early morning questioning commenced about her cousins’ arrival time. Instead of answering I whipped out the phone and said let’s call your uncle to find out. She was appropriately shocked,  ran and hid when he answered. I thought I had successfully quelled the incessant FBR questions until my son ruined it. He assured the FBR she should feel to ask me about their arrival times as frequently as possible. A real dick move.

Flashlight Parade in Abuela's Shoes
We enjoyed the FBR’s company as much as possible because we knew as soon as the cousins arrived, we would become the proverbial chopped liver. While awaiting, she took to parading around the house with July 4th flashing lights. I’m not sure why but it must have made 8-year-old sense. As we neared the cousin arrival time, the redundant FBR questioning took on an almost fever pitch. I suggested she go outside to keep an eye out for them. Remarkably she spent the remaining time out on the front porch waiting patiently (not her strong suit). She loudly announced their arrival for the entire house (and neighborhood) to hear. We got in a couple quick hugs from the BRS and BR3 before they disappeared with the FBR to do cousins things. They were soon traipsing around the house with each wearing a selection form my wife’s shoe horde which they had raided.

The rest of us settled down to celebrate the amazing moms we were blessed to be celebrating. It sounds like a hall of fame roster: my Favorite Panamanian, my daughter, the ABFA, Great Aunt, and the ABFA’s mom; great moms all. Based on the prior years’ endeavors with male culinary efforts, it was decided (decreed) that the main meal would be catered. That allowed more time to just hang out with and enjoy the company. That included Keene Friend who was at his snarky best with the dry humor zingers. Riggins patrolled the house which meant anything falling to the floor was his, although he is much more polite about it than Buddy the Wonder Pooch ever was.

Most of the Group
I picked up the food from Ciao Bella (great as always) and was able to set up the buffet line with only minimal (for her) help from my Favorite Panamanian. The food was well received and Great Aunt had a son grilled steak since Ciao Bella is great with most things but is decidedly non-Gluten Free (probably why it tastes so good). This was followed by a literal parade of desserts. I am not exaggerating. I’m not saying my family was playing games with me since they knew I was trying to lose weight but the assembly of sweets was breathtaking. We’re talking cookies, brownies, candy, etc. etc. This entire weekend was an acid test for my self-discipline. The word I am looking for is, “Yikes!”.

The Moms

Wife with Kids and Grandkids
All day long the BRS, my fellow family pyromaniac, had been entreating me to have a fire. Since part of the Favorite Panamanian’s backyard makeover including parking a huge flower pot in my style challenged fire place, I wasn’t keen on fulfilling her request, even when her cousins added their voices to the request. I told them since it was Mother’s Day, the requests would have to come from the moms. I thought I was safe as they received a summary denial at their first request. One thing I’ve learned about my granddaughters, they do not take an initial “no” as the final answer. They continued wheedling for the rest of the afternoon until my Favorite Panamanian reluctantly agreed to allow us to move the flower pot and have the fire. I was so happy my son was around to do the moving. I ventured into the back yard woods to gather some hopefully quick burning pine branches. The BRS was mollified, although we did not have the makings for s’mores in house which I think constituted the reasons the FBR and BR3 had taken up the call for a fire. It was still a lot of fun hanging out with them and letting them throw things into the fire when the moms weren’t looking. The fire was followed by a dance party in the living room as the granddaughters honed their bedtime delay tactics.

The Macarena (God help us)
Great Aunt, Keene Friend, and the ABFA’s parents had to depart just prior to sundown but we still an assemblage of worthies to make a superb evening. The granddaughter going to bed ritual was the usual marathon versus a sprint as each took a turn at preventing the other two from actually going to sleep, despite a very full day. They eventually succumbed to the tiredness but not without their usual fight. Instead of moving down the Man Cave, we settled around the table for a very fun evening of talk and laughter. Wingman had brought a variety of board games which the “kids” enjoyed. They eventually coaxed my Favorite Panamanian and I to join them in a couple games. A truly great night to cap off a fabulous day, celebrating the remarkable moms.

Sunday Morning Early Risers
Sunday started off very early. The granddaughters have installed a system for wakeup time in the granddaughter room. Whomever wakes up first, no matter what the time, finds away to wake up the other two. The usual suspect in this initial endeavor is BR3. While she usually wakes up at home between 4:30 and 5, she normally just turns over and falls back to sleep. Of course, the granddaughter room offers a target rich environment, in the form of her soon to be awake sister and cousin. My son and I ran into each other in the hallway outside their room around 5am as we converged to tell them to be quiet. That never works and he eventually herded them downstairs so the moms could sleep in on actual Mother’s Day.

Wife Breakfasting Sunday with the "Kids"
The fun continued when the rest of us came downstairs to relieve my son. The BRS kept her crown as the family hojaldra queen, eating them faster than my wife could make them. My Favorite Panamanian received a dispensation to do some cooking on the holiday after last year’s attempt by my son and I to cook hojaldras went disastrously awry. After everyone was fed, the preparation for departure sadly started up. My daughter had a Curbside Girls celebration since most are moms now to make it to in the late afternoon back in Maplewood. The FBR was not pleased to be leaving and petulantly declared that she was not leaving with her parents. They, of course, overruled her attempted secession and got off shortly before noon. My son applied his recognized barbecue skills with some delicious dead animal flesh for a Sunday steak dinner. Sadly, they too had to depart immediately after the meal. They were barely out of town before we received a text from the ABFA documenting that both the BRS and BR3 were asleep. My wife and I knew how they felt as we both decided some recovery time was needed in the wake of the “granddaughter occupation”. It was a great weekend, especially since we got to honor those very special moms who have made all of our lives so special.

The Wifely Rolo Challenge
Today’s weigh-in, 14 pounds lost towards 25-pound goal. Which I consider remarkable considering the amount of sweets I was exposed to this past weekend combined with my Favorite Panamanian placing my favorite all time candy, Rolos, in the kitchen. Thanks to the Army instilled discipline, or remnants thereof, I didn’t eat a single one. Yet!

In my A-Z watch, three fell since I last posted, all keepers but a couple barely, In Harm’s Way, awesome John Wayne WW2 navy soap opera with the Duke being the Duke and a fantastic cast; In The Name of the king, extraordinarily silly with Statham as a famer who can outfight everyone with Burt Reynolds cringingly bad as a king; and In Search of the Castaways, one of my favorite movies as a kid that has aged incredibly poorly, still has Haley Mills though.

Feet and Fraud

I finally got to see a foot doctor about my right foot which has been misbehaving since January. To say I was underwhelmed with the doctor would be a vast understatement. Before I get into details, I should say that I’ve been seen by numerous doctors in the UMASS system over the past nearly twenty years and this is the first one I have found lacking. He kept me waiting in the examining room for more than thirty minutes and sailed in like I was some sort of inconvenience. I got the definite impression from him that he didn’t believe me about the pain. In the end he diagnosed me with having extremely high arches, even going so far as to pointing it out on the x-ray. I said I understood, but I’d had high arches my entire life, which had included 27 years in the infantry and jumping out of a lot of planes.

If the problem was my arches, then why wasn’t my left foot (blessed with same) not hurting at all. I could have been talking to a wall as he had apparently diagnosed me before he entered the room. He seemed definitely distracted and wanted me on my way as soon as possible. I got a referral to physical therapy which hopefully will help. I’ll probably blow off the follow up with this clown that he scheduled for August as my arches will still be high. Again, this is the first bad interaction I’ve ever had with a UMASS doctor but very frustrating as I was hoping for more of an answer than my foot is the same way it’s been for 68 years now.

If that wasn’t enough I got home, picked up the mail, and checked the monthly credit card bill. At that point I was glad I hadn’t been seeing the doctor about a heart condition. I quickly scanned down to the charges trying to figure out how my Favorite Panamanian had spent $5000 more dollars in the last month than I realized. I found that I had paid for a flight to and back from New  York to San Francisco for some clown named Manfred. Yep, stolen credit card number. I was freaking out as I called USAA, but they were fantastic, canceling the card, assuring me I wouldn’t be responsible for Manfred’s flights, and sending me a new card within two days. I love USAA as I’ve heard horror stories from others who’ve had to work through a maze to report fraud. Yep. USAA rocks.

I forgot to chronicle how the weight loss has been going in my last post. Today’s weigh in, 13 pounds lost towards 25-pound goal. The easy part is probably over now.

In my A-Z watch, four fell since I last posted, all keepers, Wonka (new addition), movie just charms the hell out of you; Independence Day Resurgence, interesting to watch right after original, better than I remembered; Infinite, underappreciated Wahlberg action, sci fi flick; and Inglourious Basterds, one of best Tarantino’s ever, loved the history melting finale.

Deckzilla Transformation

Deckzilla has looked very sad since our return. I could almost sense its unhappiness to have been abandoned for four months to face the vagaries of a New England weather by itself. We’ve gone a long way in the last couple days to relieve those feelings. Most of the credit, alright, darn near all of it, belongs to my Favorite Panamanian as Deckzilla has acquired its annual spring restoration of flowers. My role was only the physical moving of all her newly acquired assets, moving all the Deckzilla ornamentation stored in the basement (not fun), and power washing Deckzilla.

The Master at Work
Now, to that phrase, “newly acquired”; I accompanied her to the local flower emporium, swearing I would be patient as she went about her “process”. For maybe the first time in our 42-year marriage I think I actually did it. It helps that I’ve seen, over the years, how special she can make Deckzilla look, fully festooned. She was a little taken aback my apparent lack of impatience (I do have a solid track record in the whole shopping arena). When we were checking out, the lady at the register commented on how lucky she was to have such a supportive husband. I, of course, know the truth when it comes to accompanying my Favorite Panamanian on her shopping expeditions. We shared a look that only those aforementioned 42 years could produce.  I was also armed with a bunch of gift cards which mitigated the economic impact. Still, it was fun seeing her unfettered release to accomplish the combination of two of her favorite things – shopping and flowers.

The Car Loaded
The biggest challenge of the day was fitting all her acquisitions into the car. With some creative positioning, everything fit. Once I got the haul unloaded onto Deckzilla, I was directed away to let the master do her work. She spent the better part of two complete days carefully planting all her new “children”. She refers to these times as her “therapy”. Getting back to patience, she has a lot more than I do. She also has an artistic streak (giving support to the old adage that opposites attract since I have none). I stand amazed at her ability to literally transform Deckzilla into its annual summer form. We were blessed with great weather, which has since departed. She was out on Deckzilla well after the sun had set last night. The results were remarkable as Deckzilla has truly been transformed (and she’s not done yet!).

Deckzilla This Morning

In my A-Z watch, four fell since I last posted, all keepers, True Lies (upgrade), could be the perfect Governator action/comedy/drama; The Incredibles, early indication Pixar movies are something special; We Were Soldiers (upgrade), probably the best Vietnam War movie ever made, plus footage shot in old home of Ft Benning; and Independence Day, injecting epic into B-movie genre, with probably the best presidential psyche speech ever made.

Weekend Report

I have to remind myself it was in fact a weekend because my mantra since retirement has been, “every day is Saturday”. It has led to some confusion as I now find myself checking the i-Phone to see what day of the week it is. Still a good problem to have. My Favorite Panamanian assists with the day recognition efforts be requiring church attendance which provides a defined benchmark, at least for me, for Sunday. She attends church three other days as well but I’m not that excited (or devout) about the whole day recognition as she apparently is, so I usually am just turning over in bed when the garage door opens below me as she heads out. It’s getting to “excited time” around the homestead with Mother’s Day inbound. That means we’ll have both kids and their families here, as well as the ABFA’s parents and Great Aunt, at the same time. Score!!! I arranged for the catered meal we’ll have on Saturday when we celebrate the holiday since my daughter has to return on New Jersey early on Sunday. The catering was at my wife’s request which was a very salient comment on my culinary exploits/abilities since I cooked the meal last year.

Friday Night at the Bar with the Mafiosos
Prior to the weekend, my Favorite Panamanian located the birthday present for BR3 who turns four this upcoming week. I was initially pleased when I unloaded the hefty box, a bicycle, secretly smiling at the task, not so fondly remembered, that my son would have assembling it. That was, until, my Favorite Panamanian informed me that I would be doing the assembly so we could provide the bike in ready condition to the birthday girl. My secret smile vanished at that instant. My son had the temerity to laugh at me later when I related this. I got it together and only skinned seven knuckles doing it, which is much better than my average. BR3 will get a functional bike next weekend.

Bike and Assorted Debris in the Man Cave
I don’t mean to insinuate that I didn’t have a bit of fun this past weekend, even sans the caloric intake. On Friday the Neighborhood Mafiosos invited us out to dinner at a new (for us) restaurant, the Mill, in West Boylston. I’ve driven by the place at least a hundred times (there’s a movie theater about a mile past it, in way of explanation). It was a great discovery as both my Favorite Panamanian and I loved the place. My wife loved the food and I loved the atmosphere. Yet another debt we owe our fantastic neighbors. Since the music was a single guy crooning away, we decided the night was too young to forego dancing. We set out for our favorite Friday night haunt, the Auburn Legion Post. The place was uncharacteristically packed so we ended up sitting at the bar (something I didn’t mind in the least – felt like going home, but I digress). As usual we were amongst the youngest people there which does wonder for the ego. We had a very fun night dancing to a band playing ‘70s hits. Yet another win.

At The Mill Friday Night
In the weight reduction effort, which I promised I would start after my last post, getting back to exercising is much easier said than done. Not because I didn’t do it but this battered old body reacting to a renewed level of physical effort. As promised, I will also report my progress. Today’s weigh-in showed a loss of a little over eight pounds since I started with the target of 25 pounds eventually. I’m thinking cutting out all the sweets I have been devouring helped the most. The Keto effect should start in a day or so as I body adjusts to the lack of carbs. Still, eight pounds in three days is a good start but I always knew the first 10 would be the easiest.

In my A-Z watch, four fell since I last posted, all keepers, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiney (new arrival), Ford still has it, with a fond farewell to this iconic character; Immortals, pre-superman Cavill cavorting as Theseus; The Marvels, much, much better seeing it this second time; and Inception, mind blowing film where I think I’m finally catching up with all the plot points.

Delayed New Years Resolution Time

Alright. I know that a lot of people use weight loss as a New Years Resolution. I didn’t this year because I thought I was in a good place. That has all changed over the past month. In my defense I’m only partially responsible. Okay to be perfectly honest, about 90% my fault. The Mohs surgeon forbid me from working out since the surgery but that edict expires tomorrow. This lack of exercise, which is the bedrock of keeping the belly encroachment at bay, combined with my admitted consumption of everything containing sugar over the past two weeks has created issues. This happened on top of a solid month of over indulgence during my final weeks in Panama. The result is I’m 25 pounds heavier than I was when I left for Panama.

The question I’m sure you’re asking is why am I talking about this here. You are part of the solution. Congratulations. I figure if I post it here, my fragile will to lose to the weight will be embellished. I’ll report over the coming weeks on my progress to rid myself of the excess baggage. This way, if I fail, all my friends and family can call me on it (and they will). So tomorrow I start exercising again and go back on the semi-strict keto diet. I may have a built-in excuse (which I promise not to use). I had an x-ray on the right foot earlier this week in prep for an appointment next week with a foot doctor. I’m able to see the x-ray results online and that doesn’t help except that I know there isn’t a fracture involved. The rest is in “doc speak” so mere humans have to depend on the doctors to interpret. WebMD wasn’t much help with this diagnosis: “hallux valgus deformity with mild soft tissue swelling medial first MTP joint. Mild degenerative changes DIP joints and midfoot. No fracture. Vascular calcifications are present.” So, I’ve got that going for me. Reporting will ensue, good or bad.

Backup Plan

My Favorite Panamanian left me to my own devices for the past couple afternoons which meant two trips to the local cinema for movies that came out while I was still in Panama. The first was Civil War. I heard a lot about this movie going in so my expectations might have been too high. I didn’t like it. The scenario as unbelievable, I mean, California and Texas teaming up! Right. The action was broken up by spells of forcing the movie goer to endure long periods of time where the actors, mainly Kristen Dunst, look off camera, I guess emoting. It was boring and grew to the point of complete frustration. I get it, actors like to portray emotion, but when the director decides we all want to try and interpret the actors’ inner thoughts in the middle of a supposed action movie. Fail.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire was also a bit of a disappointment. I really enjoyed the earlier film with the new cast but this latest was too busy, trying to fit in too many characters and giving none of the them enough. I know, that doesn’t make sense but somehow it did. Trying to shoe horn in every character from virtually every movie in the ghostbuster series diluted the impact the new cast had. The movie also didn’t have the comedic edge all the prior ones thrived on. It was almost as if they wanted it to be a straight horror story which would never work. Sadly, after the promise of Afterlife this one fizzled.

In my A-Z watch, four fell since I last posted, all keepers, The Hunger Games, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (new addition), interesting take on the origins of the main villain of original Hunger Games;  I, Frankenstein, loved this action filled take on a modernized monster; Beekeeper (new addition), latest Statham thriller, adds to his legend, great action; I Love You, Man, almost jettisoned this one because Seigel is so annoying, rescued by supporting cast and of course, Mr. Rudd.
