Northern Surprise

My Favorite Panamanian and I are just back from an excursion into the distant north of New Hampshire for a get together with our friends from last year’s European trip. That foray into New Hampshire turned out to be a much bigger surprise than I anticipated. I had been secretly grumbling about the need to drive more than three hours to a place less than fifty miles from Canada to see a country music band in concert. I was looking forward to seeing the friends again, but wished it could have been closer. I was wrong.

The Ladies by the Lake
One of the couples own a second home on a pristine lake in the middle of the White Mountains, just a few miles from Bethlehem, NH, where the concert was taking place. We were treated to a beautiful drive up through the colors of late fall and passed by the place where the Old Man of the Mountain used to hang out (sadness). This was followed by a twisting ride through some back roads to the lake. I was stunned upon arrival. Their beautiful home sits on a bluff above the lake which looked like a piece of glass until a loon zoomed in and stated cruising along the surface. We were immediately made to feel entirely at home by our generous hosts as we marveled at the scenery out the huge windows overlooking the mountain rimmed lake.

Scenes from the Drive Up

Missing the Old Man
After a quick trip into Whitefield for mass, we headed out for Bethlehem. We hoped to have dinner at a brewery, which would have been cool. However, the place was mobbed, as it is just down the street from the theater where the concert was taking place. This was our first indication that the band was popular. We found a nearby restaurant where we had  great dinner, laughing with each other as we caught up with happenings since we were last together. I also became acquainted with a Czech Pilsner beer which became a staple for the evening. I was driving the group in our new car which received high marks, even from the occupants of the third row, where they noted there were ports to charge cell phones.

Our Host's Home
The concert was taking place in the Colonial Theater (yep another one of those) in Whitefield, a very small town. It was an old movie house that has been converted to an event hosting arena. I loved the feel of the theater. Our seats were in the first couple rows which offered some great views. The name of the group is Asleep at the Wheel, which turned out to be a fairly famous Western swing music group that has been operating since 1970, based out of Austin, Texas. The lead singer, Ray Benson, is the only original member of the group and he was quite a character. He regaled us, between songs, of his career highlights which included time with some iconic country western singers, including Willie Nelson, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Vince Gill. He even made a TV movie with Dolly Parton who he considered a true friend.

Asleep at the Wheel
The band featured a saxophone player and a fiddler. I love listening to both of these instruments and each of performers were fantastic, especially the fiddler. The packed theater was involved from the beginning as the band cycled through some of their own songs as well as old favorites. There was an area cleared between the seating and the stage where we were encouraged to dance if the mood struck us. You know who I’m married to, right? We had a great time as I spent my usual time dancing with her, hanging on for dear life. While we were dancing, the band struck up Amarillo by Morning, which brought back so many memories as it was the signature song of the Roothuggers karaoke group.

Ladies on the Dance Floor
We were served drinks in our seats, including more of that Czech Pilsner. By the time the concert was ending, the crowd was firmly in the band’s hands, shouting and cheering our approval of a great show (I didn’t even know I was a fan of the genre before this). Ray Benson was a superb host as he introduced the band and recounted his amazing stories of a life spent in the music industry. They concluded their encore appearance with solos by both the sax player and the fiddler, I couldn’t have asked for more. It was such an unsuspected yet transcendent experience. All my grumbling had created a perfect environment to be pleasantly surprised.

The Morning View
We returned to the lake house where we sat around their dining room table and recounted the night, laughing into the wee hours. A fantastic night spent with now good friends. I was up before anyone else, and I walked out to the windows facing the lake I was greeted by an incredible view as layers of clouds laced the far tree line and mist was rising out of the lake. The photo doesn’t do it justice. I think the word I’m looking for is, majestic. The loon was back on the lake as we sat around the breakfast table for a spirited talk, most aimed at what our next event together would be.  As we drove home after breakfast, I reflected on how fortunate I was to be running around with my Favorite Panamanian. She’s the uber-social one who gets me into situations like this that I would probably avoid if she wasn’t my social director. I’m lucky that way.

Getting Ready to Leave This Morning
The week preceding this adventure ended meekly. I finished another puzzle. I thought it was another one of those 999 piece versions until I located the missing piece under the couch. The gas company was scheduled to change out our gas meter during the usual 12-4pm time period on Friday. I hate being confined to the house awaiting something I’m not particularly psyched about. I employed my “go to” method of assuring their early arrival by trying to take a shower. I put the phone where I could see it while showering and, predictably, as soon as the shampoo hit the hair, the phone started ringing. After a soggy answer and subsequent meter replacement, the rest of Friday afternoon belonged to me.

Our Back Yard is Sporting some Color As Well

It met a satisfying conclusion with the return of the weekly First Friday Family Facetime call. Great Aunt was only on for a bit as she had all three grandkids circling her for attention, she looked tired but very happy. In similar fashion, my son was presiding over the costuming of the BRS and BR3 for a School Halloween event, okay that was mostly the ABFA, while my son looked on bemusedly. He departed with them for the event which left us with our daughter and a welcome surprise of Wingman. He usually has to work Fridays so this was the first time in a while we were able to talk with him. A very cool development. It turned out his adventure was only beginning as he spent Saturday conquering his fear of heights so the FBR could participate in a tree top trail with him.

Prep Underway

Today is an auspicious date as it marks the date of birth of none other than the Absolute Best Family Athlete, my incomparable daughter in law. She claims to have reached the ripe old age of 29 (again), which is still believable. I love having her as part of the family and the only human alive able to get her husband, my son, out of his engineer mindset when needed. She’s a great mom and I’m so glad the BRS and BR3 have her as a role model. Happy Birthday ABFA!!!! Enjoy your day!

The Birthday Girl!!!
With her Favorite Little People
It’s already gotten late in October? That seems patently unfair on a number of levels. My favorite time of year always passes too quickly, but this year it has seemed to be on turbo drive. As I drove in yesterday, I noticed what a good though unsurprising job my Favorite Panamanian has done keeping her vast garden area blooming in front of our house. As the summer flowers died off and were hauled off to ferment on the back hill (34 guesses who did the hauling), she replaced them with the usual mums, which are thriving. This provided the noteworthy look that caught my eye. They’ll eventually end up back on the hill as well as New England marches towards the cold of winter. At least I’ll have next week’s trip to Europe, Thanksgiving and Christmas to look forward to, not to mention a certain birthday pub crawl.

The Mummified Front Yard
Outside the house isn’t the only place undergoing renovation. You remember a few weeks ago when I posted a photo of the area in the basement outside the Man Cave where we hope to have a bathroom installed? Working stealthily over the past week, to avoid spousal supervision, I’ve cleaned the place out and it is ready. It looks like late November at the earliest for that project. I also had my annual physical today and, as required by Great Aunt, I have to report the aftermath. I came through with flying colors. The doctor pronounced me in excellent health although he did refer me to an orthopedic to have the balky knee looked at, but it seems the workout regimen is paying off. I also finished my binge watch of the entire Supernatural TV series. It turned out to be a lot more work than I thought, 15 seasons worth, but I enjoyed hanging out with Sam, Dean, and Castiel again. I can now address the stack of movies I’ve accumulated over the last month.

The Future Bathroom Location Before Picture

And After
For date night we saw Whalefall. I was underwhelmed after having the preview for this movie inflicted on me repeatedly over the past few months but decided to see it anyways. Do not see this movie if you are claustrophobic. The main actor spends most of the movie inside a huge sperm whale’s digestive system. He is accidently swallowed, along with a huge squid, while scuba diving. The rest of the movie is his struggle, first with the fellow swallowee and then not dying. Throughout his struggle we see flashbacks of the difficult relationship he had with his recently deceased dad. I’m usually a sucker for dad-son movies, but those flashbacks were the weakest part of the film, paper thin. The lead actor, Austin Abrams, is very good. I felt kind of sorry for him for his 2026 roles. He was the star of the Resident Evil reboot where he slowly  dissolves into a monster during the film. In Whalefall he’s actually dissolving in the whale’s stomach , while his air is running out. A good thriller that keeps the tension tightened from the moment the whale swallows.

Storming Heights

As I sit here typing Sunday night, the rain continues to beat against the nearby window. For once the New England weathermen seems to have gotten it right. They’ve been wringing their collective hands all week leading up to Friday about a serious Nor’easter scheduled to hit us from Friday through Monday. I’ve developed a healthy disdain whenever they wax this eloquently about how serious a storm is, a symptom of what afflicts all TV news coverage, the more serious we make it sound, the more people will watch. This storm however met their dire predictions, starting to dump significant rain Friday night and embellishing it with some serious winds on Saturday.

I Love it When the Front Hall Looks Like This
It Means we have Family in Residence
Why am I talking about a large meteorological events, you might rightly ask. The answer lies in my two kids and the bone-deep pride I have in them. They both drove through the teeth of the storm to be with us this weekend. Tomorrow is my daughter’s birthday and to celebrate she and the FBR were attending an Olivia Rodrigo concert in Hartford. They correctly surmised that Worcester is much closer to Hartford than New Jersey and decided to spend the weekend with us. This provided us with the opportunity to celebrate the aforementioned birthday as well, so we summoned my son and his brood for a Saturday celebration before the birthday girl left for the concert.

Fabulous Birthday Dinner

Granddaughters Escorting the Birthday Cake
My daughter planned on leaving New Jersey around noontime but the FBR insisted they depart later because her 5th grade class was conducting a scavenger hunt which she was loath to miss. They rolled into town late Friday night, having braved the storm’s fury. They also brought the renowned feline pair, Walnut and Pistachio. They quickly set about claiming the house as their own. My son drove down Saturday morning as the storm moved into his environs. BR3 proudly reported she had scored a goal that morning in her soccer game and then got very wet as the storm arrived. Riggins also accompanied them which had the cats in a bit of a snit until they re-learned that, being blind, he wasn’t much of a threat. We had to protect Riggins from Walnut rather than vice versa.

Candles Extinguished

Birthday Girl and FBR
My Favorite Panamanian had been planning a special birthday dinner for my daughter for Saturday afternoon. Keene Friend, as an honorary member of the family, joined us. Great Aunt wanted to, but the storm was especially nasty in Rhode Island so she had to beg off. We still had a great meal, accompanied by smoke alarms as my wife tried a new steak recipe that called for a lot of smoke (that was her story at least). The steaks were amazing, redeeming all the noise emitted in their creation. My wife had also spent her usual late nights creating a special cake for our daughter. She made it appropriately cat themed and I contributed by ordering some cat figures (matching my daughter’s two) from Amazon. It was very cool that the black cat figurine featured a tongue sticking out, just like Pistachio. Bonecrusher emerged from its Man Cave slumber to properly cleave the cake for my daughter, ably assisted by the FBR.

They then set off through the rain and wind for Hartford while the rest of us holed up for the night. My wife, the ABFA, and BR3 engaged in a lively game of Uno with BR3 singing though most of the game. We then set up in the Man Cave for some movies. My son and I stayed up late to watch a horror movie neither of our wives would ever agree to see with us. My daughter and the FBR had what they described as a magical night in Hartford. The FBR, a huge fan of Rodrigo, went so far as to declare it the best night of her life. At least until it came time to drive back to Worcester, though the inundations, getting home around midnight.

Glitter was Involved
We were all up early this morning as my son and his bunch had to leave by 830am to get back home in time for the BRS’ first Spanish lesson. My Favorite Panamanian was very pleased to see how excited the BRS was for the class. Early this evening the BRS called her abuela to report on the class and the fact that the teacher is a Panamanian! After their departure my daughter tried to grab some rest, at least as much as the cats would allow. They left a little after noon and are safely back in New Jersey. I’m a little tired as expected whenever granddaughters are involved but it was a truly great weekend despite the storm and it added yet another chapter in the pride I feel for my two kids for making the effort to reach our house despite the harsh weather.

Descending Decibels

I am trying to summon the energy to finally get back to writing here on Frail Deeds. It is the first time in a few days that I can actually sit down and write because all of my time, and a significant portion of whatever energy reserves I possess at this point, were devoted to the final days of our annual granddaughter summer camp, of which we are the more than willing hosts for. As of my last writing, we had only the FBR in residence. That changed, in truly epic fashion, on Wednesday morning when we acquired the BRS and BR3.

BRS, FBR and BR3 Together Again
That required a trip up to the Salem, NH offices of my son where they were being stored. They had arrived from their west coast sojourn with their mom Tuesday night. They were still operating on west coast time which made the assembly and move to their dad’s office Wednesday morning an exercise in patience (for their dad). We actually beat them there by a few minutes. We chose that rendezvous point because Salem also just happens to be the home of Canobie Lake Park as well, that day’s destination.

Abuela and BRS Sitting out the First Ride

FBR and BR3 On the Ride
The BRS was feeling a little more of the effect of her busy travel days and actually sat out the first ride after we arrived. Under the ministrations of her abuela and a trip to the rest room, she rallied in heroic fashion. We hit a number of rides the FBR and I missed on our trip there the week prior. As we were walking up to the log flume ride, my Favorite Panamanian, who was feeling a bit left out after missing the haunted mine exploration, said it looked sedate enough for her. The part we were walking by had the logs floating by on a calm river. I failed to inform her that the ride also included a precipitous descent into a huge splash, figuring she would acquire that knowledge at the top of the descent.

I'm the Guide Taking them through the Haunted Mine

After the Flume Plunge

Cousins Heading to their Next Adventure
You have to know my wife to appreciate two facts, she hates getting her hair wet (outside of a shower) and thrill rides. I waited for their arrival at the splash area and saw her cowering in the back trying to hide behind her granddaughters. Despite the huge surprise, she thoroughly enjoyed the ride as did the granddaughters who thought it was great fun to put one over on their abuela. We did the park proud that day as we took advantage of the reconnaissance performed the week earlier. The BRS turned out to be the bravest of the bunch. While she and the FBR partook of every scary ride available, the BRS was always the one with her hands held aloft for every descent, she was incredible.

Wife in front of the Splash

The Granddaughters Causing the Splash

On a More Sedate Ride
BR3 was a decidedly different proposition. She learned earlier this year at Disneyworld that she wasn’t a fan of scary rides. Even though she was tall enough this year to join her sister and cousin, whenever they went scary, she went sedate. This worked out as her abuela was more than willing to join her. So, while the FBR and BRS were zooming and twisting on the Untamed roller coaster, she was motoring around the oval of the Antique Cars with her abuela. Everyone was happy, even myself, safely on sidelines holding backpacks and water bottles. This meant I avoided the stiff neck from the week prior since the FBR now had a more than willing thrill ride partner in the BRS.

The FBR and BRS on the Untamed
While BR3 Took her Abuela For a Ride
Once lunch of pizza and dippin dots were sent down range, we were supposed to move to the water park side but the granddaughters heard the siren call of the beloved strains of their favorite singer, Taylor Swift. At a nearby pavilion a young Swift tribute singer, accompanied by a backup group of dancers, was performing. The granddaughters were entranced and set up on the floor directly in front of the stage. This offered a more than welcome respite to their grandpa and abuela. The girls got in line to meet the singer after the show until I pointed out the half hour they would spend waiting in line could be better utilized at the water park. Thery immediately saw the wisdom in my suggestion.

The Ladies Were Impressed

The water park was a real adventure. For the first time ever, both their abuela and I joined them in the pool. Our destination was the tidal river where we spent all our time circling the park on the fast moving current. The ladies set up shop in two floating devices and I was drafted into being the connecting device keeping us together. The BRS sat with her abuela and latched on to my neck while I was instructed to keep my hands on the FBR/BR3 float. It made for an effective if somewhat painful transit (at least for me). I got my revenge when I steered us too close to the water fall and heard my Favorite Panamanian squawking loudly about getting her hair wet, yet again. The granddaughters laughed in appreciation.

BRS and FBR Back to the Flume
We had enough time left after getting out that it was back to the thrill rides (for the FBR and BRS). They were very “persuasive” when it came time to leave, about “just one more ride grandpa”. As you can imagine, I was powerless to resist. I carefully guided our departure away from some of the more attractive rides and was eventually able to depart. Since we slayed so late, most of the traffic on the benighted I-495 had dissipated. We made the tactical decision this year to have each granddaughter sleep in different bedrooms. This paid immediate benefits as they all slept in past 8am on Thursday. This would have been unheard of in earlier years. I think the west coast time difference helped since BR3 is usually the instigator and she slept the latest

Parents Dream?
Thursday, we had the one disciplinary problem with the FBR for her entire stay with us. That is a new record. She decided she wasn’t going to wear the special T-shirts we had made for them. It stated Granpa and Abuela’s Summer Camp 2026 and featured a photo from their visit to us in Panama. The FBR decided she didn’t like the photo and adamantly refused to wear it. I just as vigorously disagreed with her. We took the photo below on Deckzilla where my 51% of the vote on the attire was recognized although you can see her trying to hide. She sulked a little trying to tie the shirt up so it couldn’t be seen. That lasted until we were entering David Farmland, Thursday’s destination. The young lady checking us in saw the t-shirts and complimented the FBR on a great look. For the rest of the day, she was proud to display it.

Unhappy FBR
We had the added benefit, at David Farmland, of Great Aunt, her grandkids and their mom, joining us. It was very cool to see how effortlessly the group of grandkids merged. Everyone wanted to be the personal bearer of the youngest, Namesake Nephew’s daughter. She seemed oblivious to all the attention, enjoying her day with the animals. We had just entered when I found all there of my granddaughters with baby goats in their laps. BR3 didn’t look especially pleased about this while the FBR and BRS definitely were. BR3 also went out of her way to show us she has conquered her comical fear of chickens, even going so far as to chase one down to pat. This was a much better decision than during her recent trip to the west coast where she tried to pat a wild black bear they encountered hiking. The FBR befriended an Alpaca despite her fear of it spitting at her (too much Nature Channel). Likewise, the BRS adopted a mom and baby goat tandem she named Oreo. I had to repeatedly remove all of them from the attraction where they could pat live kittens. If there was a five minute break in the schedule that was where they were headed.

Great Aunt getting her Time in
The kids had a great time at the park’s bounce houses which we strategically scheduled for prior to lunch. After lunch, it was off to the water park side. That had been seriously redesigned since last year and wasn’t as much fun as prior years. The granddaughters did not take on the suds machine, saying that the suds got inside their bathing suits too much. While Great Aunt’s brood decided to stay there, I was called upon to escort my bunch to the back forty where there is a huge slide and a self-propelled cart path. There was a great moment here where Great Aunt’s 4-year old granddaughter wandered over and wanted to partake in the carts which required pedaling. The BRS, without being asked, took her under her wing and walked around the entire course next to her cart. The BRS also showed almost freakish upper body strength by carrying the same 4-year old around the park all day.

I think this will be the last year we hit David farmland. It is expensive but the kids don’t seem as excited about it as in prior years. They did like the traditional after-park ice cream stop at the Sterling Ice Cream Bar. In a first, all three finished their servings which are more than generous. Yet another sign they are growing up. Adding to he fact that the FBR now comfortably fits into her abuela’s shoes and will probably catch up to her height-wise in the coming year (although that’s not exactly a lofty standard to meet).

Ice Cream Aftermath
Friday’s big event was the annual WooSox game we bring the kids to, with the added benefit this year of fireworks after the game. Prior to that, the BRS and BR3 heard through some granddaughter grapevine that their abuela owed them a shopping trip. Enough said. The FBR provided expert advice to her cousins and they conducted a successful raid on the Blackstone Shopping Center. That was followed by a series of videos created in the Man Cave which they, once again, seized control of by main force. The FBR was the director and photographer while her younger cousins performed the music videos. I was genuinely impressed with the artistic effort although both their abuela and I lost control of our phones during these times as the needed cameras

The game was a lot of fun although I’m not sure the granddaughters realized there was a baseball game going on. They reveled in the between innings entertainment and tried to chase down the various mascots the WooSox employ. Their stated goal was to reappear on the big scoreboard screen which they achieved with an enthusiastic dance number at their seats. They also sought to bankrupt their grandfather with repeated runs to the park snack bars. Anybody who’s ever bought food at a ballpark will understand. For the last three innings of the game, BR3 was in definite sleep mode, barely keeping her eyes open. The WooSox fireworks after the game more than woke her up. I’m always impressed with the length and quality of fireworks they provide.

That Last Shoulder Ride
After the fireworks, we moved with the crowd exiting the park and I hoisted BR3 up onto my shoulders as she was struggling to stay awake. I told her that this was probably the last time I gave a shoulder ride to a granddaughter due to their growth and my advancing age. That kind of twinged at my heart. We had just about reached our car in the parking lot when I heard an anguished cry from my Favorite Panamanian. I thought she was having a medical emergency until she revealed that the outburst came as a result of realizing she had left her glasses case and glasses back in the stadium. They continued onto the car while I worked back through the crowd to the emptying stadium. I thought they were gone for good when I reached our seats and couldn’t find them, until I remembered she had put them in front of my seat and there they were. I returned to a hero’s welcome at the car where the granddaughters seemed very entertained by my extended hike.

The granddaughters once again seized control of my Man Cave to execute their video campaign, while I got to hang out with my daughter watching the Sox game in the kitchen.

With a childless house, he hosted his fantasy football league’s draft Saturday night. It seems that he’s learning the valuable lesson that partying into the wee hours of the morning in your forties is not as easy as it was twenty years before. Although the decibel level in the house is decidedly lower now, I’m relearning my annual lesson of how much I miss having the noise around. I must have done something special in a prior life to have been blessed with these grandkids and their parents. I don’t know how many more years they’re going to want to spend time with their grandparents but they breath needed energy and life into our summers that we didn’t realize we missed until they arrived.

I Already Miss the Pile of Shoes
