The New Bus |
I was really dragging all day yesterday. My wife claims it is because of all the
driving I did yesterday combined with my slightly advanced age. I refused to accept her explanation but there
is probably no better theory. Coming
back after three days away from the desk always means trying to recall where I
was at on Friday on several projects; maybe my wife is on to something.
The big event was the arrival of a sample of
a new bus we were just awarded a government grant to purchase. It is a completely electric bus that only
requires a five minute charge after an hour in service. We had a ceremony at Union Station where the
US congressman, who was instrumental in getting the grant and several other
state politicians made speeches about the importance of green technology. We then packed the bus with people and gave
them a quick trip around Worcester.
As with any trip around Worcester this trip
included a very steep hill which the bus did not enjoy a whole lot. Even more impressive was the fact this particular bus had over 500,000 miles on it because it was used for the intense testing required of new transit vehicles. It was kind of disconcerting to be in this
huge machine moving along the street with virtually no noise from the motor. The inventor of the bus and president of the
company that produces them was the driver and since I was the navigator I had a
good time talking with him. For a genius
millionaire he was a regular guy; very countrified. He remembered me from a earlier trip and had
a great sense of humor.
Last night was our rescheduled date night
(wife’s yoga class changed nights) and we finally got to see Taken 2. The original Taken is one of my favorite
movies and this sequel picked up the action shortly after the events of the
first. This was obviously a naked
attempt to cash in on the surprise hit of the first movie but there was no way
I was going to miss it.
Neeson didn’t seem as engaged in this movie
and the plot strained credulity. After the
events of the first movie why the hell would he bring his family within
striking range of the family he decimated in the first movie? This movie didn’t have the same tension or
ingenuity of the first and was lazily written.
All that being said, Bryan Mills is still a very dangerous bad ass and
it was a great ride watching him cut a swath through the bad guys. Maggie Grace was more than just a pretty face
in this one but Famke Janssen (one of my favorite actresses) was kind of wasted
as only a victim. If you liked the first
one – you’ll want to see this in the theater, if only for the stunning camera
shots of Istanbul – one of the world’s great cities.
