Dental Power Play

I know I’m running afoul of time as age continues to creak into me but a barely five-foot-tall slip of a girl should not be able to kick my ass; but it happened. I was back at the dentist to get my long-delayed cleaning and have them pop the temporary crown back in place. The usual hygienist is no longer there and has been replaced by the aforementioned young lady or, more correctly, dynamo. I guess, after the three month delay from when the cleaning was originally supposed to happen, my teeth became a target rich environment. She constantly asked me if she was hurting me which she wasn’t except for neck muscles struggling to keep my head attached as she whirled her scraping tools with wild abandon.
When she finished her thunder run through my mouth we made my next appointment and for the first time it was an appointment (January 2021) that would take place after I retired. When asked what time was best I replied that I didn’t have anything on my schedule. I kind of liked that. Of course, my Favorite Panamanian will, I’m sure, by that time have imposed some sort of lien on my time. The old target rich environment again.
The granddaughters made their usual contributions to the morale department last evening. The FBR was very excited that the neighborhood bakery had re-opened and Wingman escorted her there to get one of her signature favorites - a cinnamon roll. She likes to torture her grandparents with the wide range of sweets she has for dessert each night knowing we aren’t as capable in that department. My wife takes particular umbrage. The BRS was moving chairs around the kitchen during our call so she could, in her father’s words, prepare dinner for the family. That was probably very interesting. Earlier in the day she gave her father a thumbs up sign for the first time. She’d done something well and when my son gave her a thumbs up she replied with one her very own, shocking her dad. One of those small moments with young children as they consistently amaze as they develop.
I was back at the movies, sort of, when I finally saw a movie I’d been meaning to see when at the theater when the pandemic closed everything down. The Hunt is a very funny, very dark comedy. The premise is a bunch of rich, very liberal elites set up a hunt for some red state “deplorables”, an update to the most dangerous game. There’s some very funny skewering of both ends of the political spectrum and I don’t see what all the fuss was about when this first came out. There are some very good actors involved, including two Oscar winners. Don’t get too comfortable, as I did, when a recognizable actor appears on screen because they’re probably about to be added to the body count. I hadn’t seen the star, Betty Gilpin, in anything but she’s someone to keep an eye on, very talented with great timing. Don’t watch this if cinematic heads getting blown off bothers you. It was sneaky fun to see the overblown idiots from both ends of the political divide get served up though.
