Wife and I Yesterday |
There may very well be a better way to
spend a beautiful New England summer day than enjoying the company of good friends
at a gorgeous lake home but that’s a very tall order. We joined the neighborhood
mafiosos to journey west into the wilds of Leicester and Stiles Reservoir for
an afternoon at the summer home of another set of friends. They were fabulous
hosts and even had a 12 year old black lab who insisted on being part of the
group.

Our Fabulous Hosts |
I still have some of the best childhood
memories ever from my vacations at Uncle Bud’s cottage on a New Hampshire lake
and my mind always wanders back to those happy times when I find myself at a
lake front home. My mother in law chose to stay home so this was an all too
rare (lately) opportunity for strictly couple time. As mentioned above, the
weather was nigh on perfection as we sat on the elevated deck and soaked up the
spectacular views of the lake. While the scenery was remarkable the true value
of a day like yesterday was the time spent with close friends. We’re all of an
age that we’ve shared the better part of a century’s worth of history which
lends an almost family like connection.

Good Deck Times |
I’d driven by the lake dozens of times
since it is close to our old place in Charlton but never had the opportunity to
spend any time there. They had an expansive, well shaded lawn which we moved down
to once the sun burned too bright on the deck. After the hectic past few weeks
it was the perfect stress free interval that was all kinds of restorative. It
was also good to spend time with an undistracted Favorite Panamanian who didn’t
have to worry about entertaining relatives for a bit. As the sun sunk into the
pine trees we were reminded of another aspect lake/country living as the
mosquitos launched a determined attack. This is the sole advantage city living
has.
We FaceTimed in the First Blog Reader
who had just returned from her own party where media reports indicate she once
again dominated. She seemed unimpressed with the lake surroundings as we tried
to show her and much more interested in couch diving into her pile of stuffed
toys. In a move that dug even further into my heart (something frankly I did
not consider possible) she had insisted to her mother when she got up yesterday
morning that she had to speak/see “pa”, her name for me. So I started the day
off with that and finished it on the above described lake – idyllic, indeed.
