Daughter I'm So Proud of and the First Blog Reader |
I’ve seen the protests erupt at various
places after the election results. It seems over the past few years the protest
movement has become its own little cottage industry. The election of Trump certainly
provides more than adequate fodder for this niche environment to express itself.
I’d like to think the rest of us have more important things to do, like getting
on with our lives. We as a nation are defined by accepting election results, no
matter how painful (this is kind of an acid test), and closing ranks to move
forward as Americans.

If we can’t do that then the forces
that brought Trump to power have won. We are better than that. No better evidence
of that is my own daughter. She was absolutely devastated by the results of yesterday’s
election, ardent feminist that she is. Instead of picking up a sign and
blocking traffic she and Wingman have decided they are going to volunteer for
work with charities assisting the LBGT community. This is the true America and
what ultimately defines us.

Despite the cosmic level unfairness of
it all, Trump is our president-elect and will be our president. You can’t
accept the freedoms the Constitution brings on one hand without accepting the
system it establishes. To wish that Trump fails as president is to wish harm on
our own country. His election is a call to action, act like Americans and not
some mob ruled failed state. As the Cantankerous Friend stated to me yesterday,
the sun will still rise in the east and set in the west.
Freedom is a very permeable entity.
The gains by all of the minority enclaves over the past decades aren’t going to
be rolled back. We, as a nation, wouldn’t stand for it. Anybody who doesn’t believe
that just doesn’t understand their own country. This election was rejecting
ruling “elites” and that (even if we have to pay with a Trump presidency) is
not a bad thing. Once you let freedoms out of the bag and they sink in it’s
nigh on impossible to eradicate them. Take heart you still live in a country
that where you matter, despite what color, creed, orientation or origin you
bring to the mix. Fear is not an option and a really poor refuge.
Thanks Jim, you made me feel better. Barb
