October Search

Has anyone seen the month of October? Usually, my favorite month of the year in terms of weather, but the past week has been t-shirt and shorts time. I can remember snow flurries and having to wear winter garb during this month not too long ago. We haven’t even thought about turning the heat on yet, well except for my mother in law’s room where the split system has been keeping her warm and toasty on these challenging 60-degree nights. I know New England is saving up a sucker punch where we’ll transfer directly from summer to winter so I’ve been checking up on the snow blower.

At Least it's not a Monster This Year

Explaining to Dad Where Rivers Come From
This is, of course, not unprecedented but it’s still warm. I remember yet another very warm October weekend forty years ago when Great Aunt and Soxfather tied the knot. Yes, that venerable couple reaches their forty-year anniversary today and I couldn’t be happier for them. Of course, I blame them for my own marital sate. I had such a good time at their wedding that when I flew back to Panama after the ceremony, I proposed to my Favorite Panamanian less than a month later, three days after I met her. It’s fortunate the right girl entered the picture at that point, otherwise who knows where I would have needed up. Apologizing for that digression, happy anniversary to two of my most cherished friends – Great Aunt and Soxfather!

The Two Lovebirds

BRS Flashing a Devastating Smile
Both FBR and the BRS had play dates yesterday with school chums so they’re doing better than their grandpa. I was consigned thot the Man Cave where at least I saw the Red Sox rebound with an absolute skull dragging of the Houston Astros. As Soxfather keeps saying, it’s all gravy at this point for this Sox team.  Late last night I also finished watching Squid Game which lived up to the universal hype surrounding it. The Korean movie industry does a great job of skewering the human condition, especially with respect to class struggle. It was true train wreck that I couldn’t take my eyes off of.

Peeping Time

If it’s the second week of October my Favorite Panamanian and I should be wandering the mountains of western Massachusetts, Southern Vermont and New Hampshire in search of the vibrant colors a New England autumn bestows upon us. In a sign we are starting, to maybe, almost get back to post-pandemic normalcy, we made our annual pilgrimage yesterday to see the leaves. We were accompanied by my mother-in-law for the excursion as well. Most of the story will be told through the accompanying photos as it was another spectacular fall day to take in nature’s beauty.

Post-Peeping Dinner with Keene Friend

Maine Musquetera Wednesday Departure
We weren’t able to make our annual trek last year, because, well, it was 2020 and we all know what a dumpster fire that was. It was great to get back to this family tradition that started as a lark over a decade ago when I got Columbus Day off from work. Unencumbered by a normal work week we delayed until yesterday because of the window installation project. I took a different tack this year. Instead of heading north and then south through Vermont I drove northwest cutting diagonally across the state until hooking up with Route 2 just short of Greenfield.

We then followed 2 all the way to the hairpin turn where the Golden Eagle restaurant is located. This place has become part of the leaf peeping tradition as well. You’ll notice how quickly we got to lunch. We were supposed to leave right after a 9am meeting I had to Zoom into. I emerged from the meeting expecting my better half to be straining at the bit to leave. Two hours later we finally managed to hit the road. It’s a Panamanian thing. When there are no hard times assigned then departure delays are inevitable.

Our Table

After a great lunch enhanced by the three-state view from our seats we zigged north into Vermont which is where the colors really took off. You can always count on Vermont to rise to the occasion. I learned this from my mother, a native Vermonter, who always crowed about the distinct beauty of her home state whenever we drove in. I guess I do the same thing now with my own kids but correctly assign the praise to New Hampshire. The only thing Vermont seemed to have more of than picturesque lookout points were road construction crews. We stopped no less than five times to await clearance to move forward through one lane roads.

We stopped by the venerable Hogback Mountain overlook where I again paid respects to mom because the beauty is undeniable. I could even see Mount Monadnock in the distance. The ladies descended on the gift store while I stayed true to my diet for the sole reason that the shop didn’t have its usual supply of chocolate and or orange cream fudge. I would have been helpless if either had been present.

We then snuck across the Connecticut River and arrived in Keene in time to roust Keene Friend from his isolation. Since it was too early for dinner, he and I stopped by Penuche’s Ale House for a beer while the ladies went, well, you know, shopping. We all linked up at Margarita’s for a fun dinner. Fun for me because I wasn’t the one getting grilled by my Favorite Panamanian for the latest news. Keene Friend handled the interrogation with his usual good grace. A great topper for a fun day which saw the return of yet another missed tradition.

Delved Again

Yesterday was an interesting, very busy day around the casa. Frist of all we had the beautiful Maine Musquetera in residence which meant I was assigned secondary status in all social interactions involving my Favorite Panamanian. I find this status soothing as I become less prone to get myself in trouble during these interludes. We also had contractors in the house all day long replacing some of the windows. They were a father and son team that worked really hard, if noisily. The deafening process of removing the existing windows drove my three person Latin Lady contingent out to pursue their chief aim in life – shopping. Left to my own devices, a situation always fraught with peril, I put in an extended time on the bike and then installed a roped off area around the new grass emerging next to the street. Some neighborhood kids and dog walkers have taken up the challenge of preventing that grass from growing in – hence the need for the obstacle. There was also the requirement to accomplish some actual work, but that was only the weekly zoom calls in the Man Cave which was far enough away from the cacophony going on upstairs.

The Two Musqueteras Last Night
The ladies had to grudgingly return from their happy hunting grounds in the late afternoon because I had my six month skin check with the dermatologist. I don’t pray a lot but when I do I usually includes a couple aimed at the dermatologist not finding any more spots to excavate. I’ve had six Mohs surgery sessions over the past few years and am not looking to increase that total. It’s all a result of the Army, in their infinite wisdom, sending a very Caucasian young man to some of the sunniest places on earth and then not making me wear sun screen. Okay, that last part is on me.

Windows Out of Old Master Bedroom
I was on an 18-month winning streak with these appointments which I hope continues. I joke with my Favorite Panamanian about these appointments bragging that I get an attractive young lady to run her hands all over my naked body. For some reason my wife doesn’t laugh at this and rightfully scoffs at any perceived ability to get myself in trouble. It kind of makes me feel old. My usual dermatologist is on leave so I had a new lady, actually two since one was in training, do the deed yesterday. Again, both young and very good looking, which in turn made me feel very old. I thought I had skated once again when I heard the feared expression, “Have you noticed this spot before?”. Since the spot in question was on the back of my elbow the answer was pretty obvious. I learned at that point that this is a part of your body only a contortionist can see.

New Windows in Dining Room
She asked the same question for two spots on my back but answered it herself when she saw my expression. They rolled out the prep tools for the three biopsies I qualified for. The nurse knows I’ve been through this more than a dozen times so we dispensed with the whole safety briefing (at last). So, three more excavations in the skin, which luckily I have way too much of anyways. She also froze off another spot on my ear. If this keeps up, I’m going to look like a cheese grater at some point. The good news is that now that I see the dermatologist every six months they’re finding these things before they develop into anything life threatening. A bit of advice to all you sun worshippers, make sure you see a dermatologist once you hit 50 so you can start paying for that beautiful tan. Use sun screen.

The final act of the day was gong to the movies to see the latest James Bond flick, No Time to Die. My Latin Ladies abandoned me again as soon as I returned from the doctor’s office. They assured me they would rendezvous with me at the appointed hour at the movie theater. If you read about my adventure a couple weeks ago with the exact same scenario, you can understand my concerns. I didn’t speak to my wife because, well, you’ve heard the expression, “Falling on deaf ears”, right? Timeliness is just not her thing. I spoke to my mother-in-law and the Maine Musquetera about the time they needed to be there and that if they weren’t, they could find me inside the theater. In other words, I wasn’t going to wait. My wife’s mother remembers the earlier incident and appears to still be capable of supervising her daughter. In a major, almost newsworthy development, they actually beat me to the theater and had already bought their popcorn when I arrived. Stunning.

Everyone knows this is Daniel Craig’s last foray as James Bond and it was a well-earned, epic send off. Craig’s Bond was always told on a more personal level and this final movie completes the arc that started with Casino Royale. Bond is led to question everyone in his life as he moves around the globe trying to unravel an insidious plot involving old friend Blofeld as well as his lady love. It is a very good story and I hardly noticed the nearly three hour running time because, in typical 007 fashion, you literally only a heartbeat away from the next stunning action sequence. It does raise the interesting question about how many times a guy can get nearly blown up without becoming a vegetable. I know we’re talking James Bond here but it’s good this was his last movie because we’re talking mouth drooling PTSD if not. There are some kick ass ladies who no longer serve as just window dressing in Bond movies. They are led by Ana De Armas who’s only on screen for a short time but dominates. Every plot thread from Craig’s story line is neatly and usually fatally tied off and there are some genuinely poignant odes to earlier movies, including predating Craig’s tenure. The only downer and it wasn’t a big one was the villain. Rami Malek plays the reptilian megalomaniac with too much nuance, if that’s even possible.  He gets kind of lost in the maelstrom of action and explosions as the movie careens towards the inevitable good bye. A great movie bringing all you expect from a Bond movie, raising the level and injecting more heart than has ever been permitted.

Sweeeeeet!

Well, if I was happy yesterday on Frail Deeds, you can guess where I’m heading today. The Red Sox executed another walk off win to send the very talented, but very young, Rays home for the winter. It was kind of an ugly win as the Sox blew a five run lead, predictably in the 8th inning and then won the game on a single, bunt, fielder’s choice and then a sacrifice fly. Fenway was once again electric and more than helped the Sox dispense with the boys from Tampa. I think that was the difference in the series, maturity. The Rays, by virtue of their limited budget rely on young players. While that can be a strength as they seem to have a preternatural ability to identify young talent it can also hurt when they’re experiencing playoff pressure for the first time.

These Guys Know how to Party
They came into the game with a lot of swagger though, like they had this in the bag. None more obvious about it than their brilliant young shortstop, Wander Franco, who looks to be a certified Sox-killer. While he did his level best to rise to the occasion the rest of the team wilted under the pressure. That was, of course, more than fine with me. The bottom of the 9th win sent the house into a frenzy followed by the obligatory family text messages flying back and forth. The Cantankerous One even got into the spirit of things from his South Carolina vacation spot. It was a very New England kind of thing.

Less Swagger now, Wander?

The Boys of October
I typing this in the midst of some deafening noise as the workers that were supposed to be here yesterday showed up today to replace a bunch of our windows. They have to cut the old ones out first, hence the noise. The Maine Musquetera showed up last night but I don’t have a picture of them together yet because she showed up during the game (need I say more?) and then they fled early this morning to escape the noise. You can guess their destination. They were a little crestfallen to learn they had to be back by 3:30pm since I have a dermatologist appointment this afternoon. So, Go Sox, I never imagined they would knock off the Rays but as wise, yet Cantankerous Friend, opined, get into the playoffs and anything can happen.
