Wifely Cold Turkey

I had a strangely disturbing experience yesterday. My Favorite Panamanian abandoned me for the day to travel back to David for a unique opportunity to have lunch with two members of the original Panamanian Mafia from our days in Northern Virginia. These two ladies also have Chiricana roots and happened to be in the city on the same day, hence the lunch. My wife was still bubbling from the time spent together with these old friends when she returned last night. The return was the aforementioned experience for me. I had a very good day as I had the entire condo complex to myself which appealed to my megalomaniacal side. It was kind of lonely though, but again, there are worse places in the world to be isolated.

Wife Surrounded by Mafia Yesterday
The problem was the lunch ended in the early afternoon and she still hadn’t returned as the sun set. It was a glorious sunset though, but I digress. My Favorite Panamanian had a number of places she had to stop by to complete errands and I received a text around 4 saying she was headed to the last one before returning home. I realized after sunset that I had no way to contact her if she was out of Wi-Fi range, that also applied to cell phone location which only works here in Panama when she is, again, logged on to a Wi-Fi signal. I was bounding off the walls, sending messages via Facebook to her sister and niece with no answers. On my twentieth (or so) trip to the front I finally noticed some headlights approaching and it turned out to be the long lost spousal unit.

It turned out she had sent several messages that failed to send but she didn’t notice until I asked her why she hadn’t kept me apprised. The strange part was I had felt so helpless stuck at the end of a very isolated stretch of beach with no vehicle. She laughed and said she was surprised she didn’t run into me walking up the road in search of her. I assured her that was my next planned step. My happiness at seeing her safe and sound was tempered a bit when something stung me on the bottom of the foot. Another lesson, relearned, everything in Panama bites. I’m glad she had such a great time with old friends. There are very few things in life to rival time catching up with long held friends.

This is Where I do Workout Each Morning
With my additional time to myself, without having to share attention with cable TV, I’ve fallen back into reading, a lot. I stocked up the kindle before coming down here and have already finished off three books, including a new Steven King and the latest Joe Pickett novel from CJ Box. There’s just something about the beach that cries out for you to read books. I blame my mother who spent literally all her time on the beach when we were young reading. I am so glad she passed that on to me.

ABFA With her Parents & the Two Ladies
We saw these photos of the BRS and BR3 in their Easter finest. They spent the holiday with the ABFA’s parents. The photos served as a stark reminder that no matter how delightful life is, here in paradise, these ladies will always call me home. Willingly.

Work, Sort of

I am assured that today is Monday, although there are none of the usual clues. We now have the entire condo building to ourselves so I guess that is an indicator. I should say I have the entire building to myself since my Favorite Panamanian has abandoned me. She traveled back to David for lunch with a couple of the Panamanian Mafia that happened to be traveling through town. She’ll also score some of the supplies we learned we needed after arrival, important things like popcorn and tonic water. Without my daily dose of tonic water before bed the leg cramps that had been virtually eliminated have returned, so I guess, kind of important. This also marks a return to work for me, obviously over the internet so we’ll get a solid dose of zoom over the next few weeks to see if this concept works. I have to say the view here has much to recommend it over the Man Cave.

Wife and I Last Evening

Some People Just look Better Than Others in the Setting Sun
I finally coaxed my wife away form her iPhone long enough for a sunset walk down the beach last evening. It wasn’t one of the more spectacular sunsets but still impressive. It’s funny how effective my Favorite Panamanian has gotten on the electromagnetic spectrum. A few years ago she was timid about using her iPhone but now she’s calling friends around the world from this isolated condo. I shouldn’t be surprised, it is a telephone, talk about a fish to water.

Sunset Last Night

I was back on the beach this morning for the workout and for the entire hour and a half I was down there I did not see another human being. Monday. Boogie boarding was a little less fun this morning as the tides had created a band of debris on the bottom when I was hip deep which I had to walk through to get to the launching site. I wasn’t real happy to step through stuff I couldn’t see, expecting something to bite me at some point. I know, me and my huge problems. It is interesting to see the shoreline ecology as the tide pulls out. Hundreds of holes pop up and creatures emerge, mostly fiddler crabs. There’s evidence of other creatures as well with tracks through the wet sand from the holes. I’ll have to ask my ecologist brother-in-law the next time he comes by.

One of those Holes with Surrounding Tracks

As I was heading upstairs after the workout I encountered a fairly large version of those fiddler crabs I was talking about. He had made his way inside the condo building and felt threatened by my approach. He tried to look as fearsome as possible but never made it past pathetic. I tried to escort him outside but every time I got close, he was into some serious brandishing and although small I didn’t want to test the effectiveness of the claws. He was gone when I passed by a few minutes later.

Easter Hot

This will definitely go down as my hottest Easter in at least 36 years, the last time I passed the holiday in Panama. We’ve established an effective routine already. I’m up with sun, around 7am and shortly thereafter I’m down on the beach for the daily workout. This, of course, after a ten-minute session of sun block lathering. I’m not just saying that just because my dermatologist might read it either. Those of you who’ve never experienced a truly tropical sun would be amazed at how fast you can get a burn. I sometimes think my issues with the dermatologist and repeated Mohs surgery date to my three-year assignment to Panama as a young lieutenant when I rarely, if ever, used sun block. There were a number of other places the Army sent me that were liberally blessed with sun: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, and Hawaii. Except for Hawaii it’s where the bad guys were. I’m doing everything I can now to avoid skin damage; Mohs surgery is not fun; also wearing a swim shirt cuts down on the lathering of sun block.

My Cantankerous Friend, in a rare moment of thoughtful consideration, reminded me to be careful. He’s an avid beach bum himself and has also dealt with skin issues for the many years the Navy sent him to sunny places. I have reclaimed my title as the “Whitest Man in Panama”. This isn’t a cultural comment, simply a statement of fact. This is the first time we’ve come down here with a full winter behind me to thoroughly blanch the skin. The tropical sun doesn’t take prisoners so I’m being careful.

My View Doing Ab Workout
Back to that routine. I do my morning workout on the deserted beach, well, me and the pelicans that is. After this I’m bouncing between the pool for laps and boogie boarding in the surf. The boogie boarding provides the better workout as I have to fight through the waves to get to the launch point. My Favorite Panamanian wanders down around the first time I’m coming out of the surf and we set up shop in one of the beach bohios (a sideless grass hut) where she prays and I read. After a few more trips into the ocean, around 10am, we head upstairs for brunch and to wait out the hottest part of the day. Today she inveigled the condo caretaker to harvest a few coconuts for her. She now has a gallon of “agua de pipa” (coconut water) which she loves.

A Tough Life

Agua de Pipa in the Bohio
We’ve had a number of Facetime calls with the granddaughters. The FBR is totally fascinated with the beach and pools although she claims to not remember being here two years ago. The BRS is a bit more sanguine, passing through a phase where she doesn’t want to talk with us. She had more important things to do yesterday during our call. My son and his family are at the ABFA’s folks’ home for the holiday and the BRS was hunting down their cat. Unfortunately, she found its hiding place and earned a scratch on her wrist which should complete her education on the absolute superiority of dogs. I wish there was a way to show you the video my son sent which shows BR3 laughing uncontrollably at the antics of her sister. Even though we are in paradise I missed shivering a little bit so I could have seen it in person. As nice as it is here I would trade it in a second for an Easter with the three granddaughters.

Deployment Complete

I know it’s been a couple days since I posted here but you will completely understand after I recount how the intervening time was spent. Our week-long stay with my daughter’s family came to an end which was not what anyone really wanted, especially the FBR. She was inconsolable after going to bed Thursday night knowing we would be gone when she woke up. She was sobbing into her pillow and her parents had to go up at least three times to deal with her. The last time my daughter said the FBR had given them orders to talk us out of leaving and to request one last hug from each grandparent. Heart strings effectively strummed. While I’ll certainly miss my morning workout partner, if our time together had to end, the alternative isn’t that desolate. This is my view as I write this.

My View
Since Copa ended their direct flights to Panama from Boston during the pandemic we decided to fly out of New York’s JFK since we were already in New Jersey. There was only one drawback (well other than the smart remarks from the TSA agent about my Red Sox shirt), the flight left at 2 in the morning. Outside of some military flights, this was the weirdest hour I’ve ever flown, but it made the drive for Wingman to the airport from New Jersey a lot less problematic than it would be during the day. We got a couple hours of sleep on the plane despite the best efforts of a crying infant a few rows behind us. We landed in Panama just after sunrise. I don’t know if it was the hour of the day or a result of the pandemic but the airport was almost deserted. Instead of the usual bustling pace we literally walked up as the first in line every place we had to stop.

Another Sign of Détente - Pee Wee on Our Bed
A quick comment on flying during the pandemic. I’m not sure if this was only Copa’s procedure but it was well done. They boarded the aircraft literally row by row starting from the rear of the plane. They reversed that when we landed with everyone required to remain seated until the row in front of you departed. Of course, there were the few idiots who didn’t want to listen but, when spotted, the attendants made an announcement which finally got through to them better than the withering stares from the rest us choosing to follow the rules. The result was an orderly departure from the plane instead of the usual mosh pit when the seatbelt light goes off. I know, weird to say something good has come out of the pandemic.

At My Mother in Law's House
After passing through immigration we walked over to the domestic flight gate and were in very short order flying to David, our final destination reached by air. The upshot of our very early morning departure was arriving in David around nine in the morning. Again, a deserted terminal but as soon as we walked outside, my wife’s family greeted us at a socially acceptable distance with balloons and non-stop laughter. It was quite a welcome. They came with our car and we made a stop back at my mother in law’s house to pick up some groceries they bought for us as well as a special fish dinner she had prepared for my Favorite Panamanian.

First Friday of the Week on our Balcony
After that all too brief stop, staying outside to keep everyone safe, we were on the final leg of our journey, the hour long drive to Las Lajas. I kept thinking I should be feeling a lot more tired than I was (2 hours of airplane sleep over previous 32) but since I was driving at highway speeds on a road fully stocked with Panamanian drivers, I was thankful for the exception. We had to pass a checkpoint where they took our temperatures before allowing us access to the road to our condo but sooner than we could have imagined we arrived.

Signature Sunset Last Evening
My sister-in-law and her friend had spent some time earlier this week cleaning and fully stocking the refrigerator which was a Godsend. Instead of the usual intense cleaning and waiting for the fridge to cool down that usually accompanies our after a return year’s absence it was like we’d never left, although the pillow did smell a little mothbally (I know, that’s not a real word). We prepared a meal and after eating the tiredness that had been noticeably absent descended in full force. We decided the full unpacking could wait until today.

There are Worse Places to Work out
We spent the remainder of the day staring out at the beach listening to the surf pound the shore. I’d forgotten that sound is so prevalent here and becomes white noise after a couple days but it felt almost like coming home to have it re-inserted into the senses. The sunset was Las Lajas spectacular and everything seemed to have returned to a year ago, before all the Covid implications.

Wife Took this Photo of me (Yellow Shirt) Going into Waves this Morning

I was out this morning for a workout on the beach. I had the entire beach, for at least a mile in each direction, completely to myself. I did however, miss a certain talkative five-year-old workout partner. I took it as a sign that my first attempted boogie board ride was a huge success, riding all the way into ankle depth. The boogie board replaces the bike workout, much as the water soaked coconut replaced weights for my workout. You work with what you got. Las Lajas reminded me not to take the surf lightly tumbling me a couple times and ripping off a pair of swim goggles as well. I think I’ll survive.
