New Hampshire Fun Backed Down

Outside the Palace Theater
For all those Facebook commentators who thought I was making another of my patented thunder runs up and descending on  Keene Friend on Friday night – you forgot to read the fine print. I did indeed head north into New Hampshire but my destination was further east as we linked up with the Favorite Son and ABFA at the ABFA’s parents’ house for Friday night dinner before a play in Manchester. Buddy accompanied us and was soon joined by his nephew Riggins so we saw very little of the ABFA’s parents’’ cat.
Inside the Palace Theater

My Soon to be Absent Date
This was a great opportunity to hang out with them before my wife heads south for the winter. My son and his wife surprised my Favorite Panamanian with an early birthday cake before we made our way to Manchester and the Palace Theater. I’d never been there before but any place with a bar named Penuche’s right next door is a winner in my book. I thought Keene had the only Penuche’s. We went to see Smoky Joe’s CafĂ© which was a lot of fun.
Soon to be Birthday Girl

The Palace
Some very talented, off-Broadway level actors belted out thirty nine rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. While I didn’t recognize all of them there were some classics that brought back a lot of memories like Love Potion #9, On Broadway, Hound Dog, and Stand by Me. The best part was sharing the experience with the wonderful people I found myself with, there’s just no substitution for family. It was kind of a frigid walk to the theater but it helped when you can laugh most of the time because of the company  we were with.
No Longer a Pup
For the first time ever we spent the night at the ABFA’s parent’s house in Hudson which meant we got to wake up and hang out with everyone again. The ABFA’s mom and I took the dogs out for a walk while the more somnambulant family members slept in. Riggins knocked over the ABFA’s mom right when she was in the middle of cleaning up his donations. Luckily she was spared any injury but Riggins has certainly passed out of the puppy stage in terms of size and strength.
Floor Halfway Up
We were getting ready to leave for home when I received a call from Deckzilla Dude who showed up unexpectedly to start work on the first floor flooring. We used the Neighborhood Mafioso to get him into the house so he wouldn't be delayed. When we got home we walked into a cloud of saw dust and other vapors as he was tearing up the plywood subfloor in the kitchen. He had an assistant who jammed him wrist early in the process so I got to help out more than they planned. This was great because I hate standing around watching other people work.
End of the Day
In the whole “be careful what you wish for” category I was tearing out the last piece of subflooring in the coat closet when I could almost hear the muscle I pulled in my lower back give way. I was contorted in a weird angle and I guess the middle aged body wasn’t constructed to perform these kind of gyrations. It only hurts when I move so I don’t think it’s too bad. I, of course, refused to acknowledge that I was hurt, male pride being what it is. I stalk had seventeen boxes of flooring to move into the house from the garage and I think my wife realized I was hurt when I agreed to let her help me. That was a lot of fun.
Staged for Monday
Everything’s ready now for the floor to start going down on Monday. The new island cabinets arrived on Friday and will be ready for the granite guy to measure on Friday morning. Today should be a fairly restful day, well except when I leap to my feet to cheer for multiple Patriots’ touchdowns as they win the super bowl again. My daughter finally took some time out of packing to post some more photos of the soon to be most beautiful resident of New Jersey.

Advance Celebrations

Dinner Last Night
My wife is once again abandoning me to the New England winter while she seeks warmer climes in her hometown in Panama. Her Tuesday departure is later this year and I really enjoyed having her around for the rare January. She kind of owes me a few months after last year’s absences. Her impending departure called for celebrating early both her upcoming birthday and our 35th wedding anniversary since she will be south for both events. I took her out to dinner last night to one of her favorite restaurants in Worcester. We were seated in the exact same table that we celebrated an anniversary dinner a few years ago.

It was a very good time because, as with most married couples, although we hang out a lot with each other, the chance to sit down across from each other and just talk can prove elusive. This is especially true with everything that’s been going on with us over the past months. One of those nights where I once again realized how fortunate I was when she agreed to marry this big gringo thirty five years ago; even when she wanders into what I lamely call her “high maintenance phases”. We even fielded a FaceTime call from the First Blog Reader as she assisted with the packing frenzy out in California. Once she realized we couldn’t make any of our usual silly faces she abandoned us. It was still so nice to see her, the Cali-Daughter and Wingman and served as yet another reminder of how lucky that big gringo continues to be.
We topped the night off with another movie. I knew I was going to see A Dog’s Purpose when I first saw the previews. Dogs have had an unbreakable hold on my soul from my earliest encounters with them. The movie unabashedly goes straight for the heart and any dog lover will be trapped. I think most movie critics are cat lovers because they seem to hate it. The anthropomorphizing is just short of Incredible Journey territory as it tells the story of Bailey and his circular journey through several lives. Humans predictably come across less generously but I think that’s accurate when we’re compared against the canine soul. It’s okay to have the heartstrings yanked every now and then, especially given today’s political climate. If you love dogs, go see this as it projects more of a human fantasy/hope about our canine brothers and sisters than anything else. Good dog.
An eloquent indication of how much I value time with the offspring is today’s cancelling of First Friday’s celebrations so we can journey north to New Hampshire to spend the evening with my Favorite Son and the ABFA. We’re going to dinner and some play with them and the ABFA’s parents so the decision as a no-brainer as I get to spend the evening with some of the people at the very top of my Favorite People in the World List.

Quitclaim

A California Catfisher of Some Renown
As feverish packing occurs on both coasts yesterday turned out to one of those blah days that can consume moods voraciously. The West Coast packing exercise (a truly welcome occurrence, at least for certain grandparents) is in full swing with some alleged help by none other than the First Blog Reader herself.  I think Wingman and the Cali-daughter are doing most of the work though. One of my daughter’s best friends came over to help packing up half the kitchen. My granddaughter showed some real prowess with a cat fishing pole that led me to question how committed she is to the assisting with the packing.
Smile Still Shines
The East Coast packing is less friendly as my wife prepares for her annual winter migration south. Our bedroom has her usual packing frenzy results laid out which, when combined with the plants displaced from the first floor creates a formidable obstacle course, especially late at night when middle age comes calling. Deckzilla guy has been delayed at the Mafioso’s house so he hasn’t even started on our project yet. Each delay extends the completion probably into the arrival date of the California contingent. We’ll have to concoct a plan for mutual nap time and floor nailing. I’m getting sick of the desolate first floor awaiting its new covering.
The New Floor

Date night returned last night as we took in the movie Gold. If anyone has a burning desire to see an overweight Matthew McConaughey cavorting in his tidy whities then this is your movie as it’s his signature move for this flick. Those of us with more sane hopes have to be disappointed in this despite the lead’s attempts to lift it out of the doldrums. They tried to make the lead character out as some kind of visionary prospector but he comes across as more a second rate conman. Edgar Martinez, who is usually so good, sleep walks through this as McConaughey’s partner in crime. While the film boasts a truly stalwart supporting cast they can’t lift this muddled mess out of the quagmire. We all have to admit to ourselves that McConaughey is immersed in a career slump. Pass on this.

February Already!

Some More Photo Fun with Granddaughter - Cartoon View
I’m a little surprised to look up at the calendar and realize we have eradicated the first month of 2017 already. Where the hell did that go? It was a fairly full month and that level of activity has the ability to warp time forward even faster than usual. It was also the first January in a very long time that my Favorite Panamanian remained in residence. She was held in town by the requirement to babysit this past weekend down in Orlando and I couldn’t be happier. Yet another symptom of middle age seems to be the intrusion of loneliness in sharper detail.
As an Alien
I’m excited February is here though because it marks the return to the east coast of the soon to be ex-California Contingent. I hope we have the new floor installed before they arrive next Thursday. It’s currently staging out in the garage which meant I had to park my car outside last night. Of course February decided to introduce itself with a quick little snow storm dumping a couple inches on top of the car. I was half way through the snow removal this morning when a cable snapped in the new snow blower. It was the one that engages the drive wheels so I spent the rest of the exercise bent over, pulling on the disconnected cord so the machine would move. I smell another battle with Sears impending.

The snow postponed date night until tonight but the Favorite Panamanian took a break from her luggage packing (she flies south next week) to hang out in the Man Cave with me. These are the times I’m really going to miss even though I’m charged with keeping her feet warm, no mean task. We watched a movie and couple more episodes of Parenthood. We’re now well into season three which is not even halfway yet but I know I’m going to miss the Bravermans when we see the last episode. My wife’s two month absence will push that inevitability off a bit but it’s now hanging out there. I don’t know why I let my children talk me into watching TV series that I fall so hopelessly in love with. I am now convinced that Haddie Braverman has supplanted Kim Bauer from 24 as the most annoying female character in TV history.
