My kids both laugh fairly in fairly condescending
fashion whenever I’m confronted with an electronic conundrum. Usually because
they know I’ll inevitably call upon them to extract me from whatever morass I’ve
sunken into trying to do anything within the electro-magnetic spectrum by
myself. In today’s world these type situations are inevitable and while I’ve
tried to stay as current as possible, in most cases I barely get by. Thankfully
I have the very talented, if somewhat condescendant, children to fall back upon
for advice.
I bring this up because I had a couple
of rare victories yesterday all by myself. Like a complete dumbasss I lost my
Kindle on the trip to Panama when I left it in the seat pocket in front of me.
While I don’t review books here anymore I’m still a voracious reader and really
missed it. Once Copa claimed they couldn’t find it I ordered a new Kindle which
arrived yesterday. Buying it is one thing, programming it and linking it to the
existing account is also required. Thankfully Amazon made it so easy even
someone with my severely limited ability could handle this. I now have a fully operational
Kindle with all 374 books I had on the old one now re-loaded on this one.
My second victory was more mundane as
my wife’s Roomba vacuum cleaner died in semi-spectacular fashion, refusing to
move an inch until I addressed error code 14. I delved into the I-Robot app on
my wife’s phone which said this was a battery problem. I then called the help (no,
not my children) where they told me 14 could also mean cleaning off some of the
electronic heads. I did this and the Roomba was back to happily cleaning up the
detritus of the renovation project each night.
Date night was last night as we caught
latest version of Lisbeth Salander with the Girl in the Spider’s Web. If you
count the Swedish trilogy of films this marks the fifth incarnation of the girl
with dragon tattoo and she’s no less compelling here with Clair Foy in the
title role. I appreciated the decision to focus almost completely on Salander
this time and marginalizing the Blomquist character because she’s where the story
resides. She takes a break from torturing abusive men long enough to steal an ultra-secret
from the NSA and then her dysfunctional family raises its head and the body
count skyrockets. There are some gaping plot holes that can be forgiven in
order to keep the plot moving at the relentless pace needed. The movie does cause
some serious pause at buying a car loaded with electronic features though.
