Okay, really late blog post today, I
know. It was supposed to be for a good reason where I could brag about being a
home owner again. That was before the legendary Worcester city government
agencies got involved. We showed up at our attorney’s office to close on the house
and there was what he described as “a small problem”. The original builder of the
house was required by the city to perform certain tasks. He did. He was supposed
to provide documentation of this to the city. He did. The city government
provided a letter approving all of this which they were supposed to file with the
title, they didn’t. The title agent won’t accept this as a clean title until
this is fixed. While the lawyers sort this out we’re kept in limbo. All because some city bureaucrat failed to do
his/her job ten years ago.
For some reason this is incredibly
depressing. I think, since everything in the process had sailed through so
flawlessly, this just came as a huge letdown. In typical lawyer speak he was
unable to give us any time frame other than to blame the other lawyer for not
responding right away. We still signed all of our documents and gave him the closing
check but we don’t have a house yet. If this drags on I could be dusting off an
old flame thrower or two.
There was a funny moment as my wife
and I drove away from the lawyers’ office. She claimed she was surprised
because everything usually goes so smooth for us at these things. I then reminded
her of the epically screwed up closing for the first house we ever bought back
in 1989 in Rhode Island. She responded that since she didn’t speak any English
at the time she never understood it was so messed up.
This killed most a gorgeous morning,
but I did get to spend the time with my Favorite Panamanian which was a definite
plus. It was also good to have her back by side for the BoSox game last night,
although she did spend a lot of the game shopping on her IPad. Come to think of
it, we hit two stores on the way home from the lawyer’s office. Oh well, at least
there are some bone deep certainties in life. I attempted some morale boosting time
with a video call to the First Blog Reader but we caught her at a bad time; voicing
her impatience with the whole breakfast process. I know how she feels. At least
the brief glimpse of her and her parents, these pictures, and a nearby wife
helped immensely. Thank God, it's weekend eve.
