Going, Going.... |
I’ve written
before about the difficulties of letting go when we’re blessed with a visit
from one of our progeny. Yesterday was
no exception as my wife and I were called upon to once again relinquish the
company of our daughter. For some reason
she wanted to get back to NYC early.
Seems the Wing Man is heading out of town for a three week recording session
and they wanted to spend at least one night together. Go figure.
Doesn’t make it any easier on the parents though. Connecticut failed to put up a fight, traffic
wise, apparently still reeling from my daughter’s devastating counter-attack on
Thursday night.
Gone, Dammit |
My wife was
forced to go cold turkey when she forgot her cell phone for the drive. This was fairly comical because she definitely
does not like to be disconnected from the ability to reach out and talk someone’s
ear off. We weren’t twenty minutes into the
drive before she seized my cell phone and with assistance of my techno guru
daughter was loading apps to it. Since it’s
my work phone I expressly forbid her from adding her “What’s UP” app. There are some things best left to my
imagination (stunted as it is).
Wife Polishing off the Blue Trim |
When we
returned home we consoled ourselves by finishing off the front porch project
(well except where I’ve got to go back and fix where some red stain mysteriously
made it onto the freshly painted white trim).
It was good to be busy as it mollified the ache of a daughterless home. This was the first weekend in a seemingly
long time with really good weather (perfect New England summer days) and we
made the most of them although the attendant aches and pain a middle aged body
is assessed for this type activity is patently unfair. Now all I’ve got left to do this week is the even
bigger back deck (I’ve got a request in for a younger back).
Wildlings Massed for Attack on Castle Black |
Muscle recovery
time was spent in Couch Potato position #1 with my slothful co-conspirator –
Buddy the Wonder Pooch. We bounced
between Game of Thrones, Californication, and The Red Sox. The Sox delivered a last inning rally
complete with Big Papi homer while the Game of Thrones devoted an entire episode
to one story line for the first time. The
epic battle for Castle Black was given full throat and Jon Snow rallied the
defenders against the wildlings of the north (full geek mode here). There were some huge departures from the way
events played out in the book so it will be interesting to see how those are
resolved (or not). I kind of hoped
Ygritte would survive but at least the head Thenn got appropriately
hammered. Californication on the other hand
is winding down its final season as a ghost of its former self. Its finale will almost be a relief so this
once edgy comedy can rest in peace instead of continuing to linger (a la
Entourage) in its dotage.
