2025 in Movies

I didn’t see as many movies this past year as I usually do. That doesn’t stop me from being judgmental about what I did see. What follows is my rundown of the best and worst movies I saw this year. I am an unashamed movie nut.  Each year I pontificate on the best and worst from only the movies I went to see. I’ve also included what I considered to be the worst movies of the year, because that’s almost more fun. You won’t find my movies on many critics’ top ten for the year because we go to the movies for different reasons. I go to be entertained, not to judge (despite what you’re seeing here). I’ve also chosen a quote from each of the top ten movies. As you can see I lean heavily towards action (and science fiction) but I think these films are a lot more mainstream than the out-of-touch film critics whose top tens are usually incomprehensible and barely entertaining. If nothing else the films below (except for the bottom two) were hugely enjoyable. Again, this is only one man’s opinion and reflects only the movies I saw this year.

Best Movies of the Year

#1 - Fight or Flight

I thought this would be another in the long line of airplane dramas but it was so much more. A wrongly disgraced former secret service agent is recruited by a shadowy intelligence agent to locate and secure a terrorist on a cross-Pacific flight. What follows is non-stop action and comedic violence (yes that’s a thing) as the plane turns out to host a planeload of assassins after both him and his quarry. This was the biggest surprise and best movie I saw this year.

Quote

Lucas Reyes: What the fuck is going on?

Isha: Good news, we're not dead ... bad news, we're not done yet.

Lucas Reyes: Oh, fuck!

#2 – Novocain

Another huge surprise which took full advantage of the concept of a guy who could feel no pain at all. He sets out to save his lady love from bank robbers as his body is slowly attritted as he carves his way through the bad guys. Some great supporting characters add to the fun. Again, comedic violence done so well.

Quote

[a ball of spikes hits Nate in the back, then he turns around]

Nate: What the fuck is that?

#3 - Sinners

It’s hard to believe they found a new way to shoot a vampire flick but this succeeds on so many levels. Michael B. stars in dual roles as a pair of twins in depression era Mississippi who defend their dance palace against both the clan and the undead.

Quote

Old Sammie: You know something? Maybe once a week, I wake up paralyzed reliving that night. But before the sun went down, I think that was the best day of my life. Was it like that for you?

Stack: No doubt about it. Last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. And just for a few hours, we was free.

#4 - Caught Stealing

Going back to the late nineties with Austin Butler playing a NYC bartender who accidentally ends up as the target of a wide series of assassins. I especially loved the Hasidic Jewish pair as this film was entertaining throughout.

Quote

Shmully: Pulling the trigger is the easiest thing in the world.

Lipa: Sad world.

Shmully: Broken world.

#5 – Ballerina

I always wondered what John Wick did on that long voyage to Africa to sacrifice his pinkie. It turns out he was in the Alps helping a fellow assassin. That fellow assassin, ably played by Ana de Armas who once again proves she can do anything. Great flick!

Quote

Eve: You are him. The one they call the Baba Yaga. The students all talk about you. How do I get outta here?

John Wick: The front door is unlocked.

Eve: No. I mean... how do I start doing what you do?

John Wick: Looks like you already have.

#6 - Predators Badlands

The best Predator movie since the original with the interesting twist of making the predator the hero. He spends the movie with a legless robot strapped to his back which provides a lot of comedic interplay.

Quote

Dek: You should be able to survive on your own.

Thia: I can survive on my own. But who would want to survive on their own?

Dek: Tessa is your sister.

Thia: Sister. I guess she is. I have a sister. What a lovely thought. I need to find her.

Dek: And legs.

Thia: Excuse me?

Dek: Find your sister. And legs.

Thia: Was that a joke?

 #7 – Weapons

This was scary on so many levels, mysteriously disappearing children, terrifying unexplained deaths, and the most interesting witch in cinema history. Her climatic comeuppance (see below) was so startling and welcome, a perfect ending.

Quote

Narrator: This is a true story that happened in my town. So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, but today was different. Every other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy's room was totally empty. And do you know why? Because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs, and into the dark... and they never came back.

#8 – Superman

I didn’t think we needed a new Superman story but the cast and story in this convinced me. The interplay between him and Lois Clark was central to the story and made him someone you could truly root for. Nicholas Hoult was perfect as Lex.

Quote

Guy Gardner: You wanna break a federally incarcerated prisoner out of jail?

Lois Lane: Look, I think this is being done to keep him from interfering with the Boravian invasion.

Guy Gardner: No, you look. I'm a Green Lantern, lady. That means I took a vow not to get involved in politics.

Mr. Terrific: Oh, that's part of the vows?

Guy Gardner: It's implied. Yeah.

Mr. Terrific: An implied vow?

Hawkgirl: Every time there's something he doesn't want to do, he says it's part of some vow.

Guy Gardner: Oh I swear to God, I am two seconds away from forming a giant hammer and beating you both to death!

#9 - Sisu Road to Revenge

He’s baaack! This time the Russians make the mistake of antagonizing the silent hero and pay with a serious body count. There’s something just lovable and inevitable about him.

Quote

Igor Draganov: [to a captive Aatami] They say I lit the fire in you... I will put it out. You are a mistake, an aberration. I will show you that there are worse things than death.

#10 - Fackham Hall

I loved this curious mixture of Airplane and Monty Python. The through comedic send up of the British class system was perfect.

Quote:

Prudence: So, finally, one of our children is to be wed and shall soon fly the nest. I’m just delighted that our beloved home shall remain in the family. I’m just delighted that after so many years of courting, she’s finally found the right cousin. At least Poppy’s got our interests at heart, unlike Rose.

Humphrey: Rose may yet marry.

Prudence: Oh, come on, Humphrey. Who’d want old Rose? She’s 23. A dried-up husk of a woman. Barren, desiccated. A wizened old walnut of a spinster. Rose, darling, would you pass the milk?

Rose: Mama, Archibald is ghastly. It’s unfair to force Poppy so. Why can’t she simply marry for love?

Prudence: Oh, how can you be so naive, child? Do you think that I married your father out of love? Because I found him attractive? Liked his personality? His micro penis? No, I married him out of duty. And we couldn’t be happier.

Humphrey: But Mama’s right, my darling. This is about the future of Fackham Hall. Of our family. We thought, having produced four sons, that the Davenport line of succession was assured. What cursed luck to lose all four of them. And in four completely separate incidents. I console myself knowing that at least they died doing the thing they loved.

Rose: But does this not make you realize that such an archaic system of succession, that only recognizes male heirs is, pardon my French…

Honorable Mention –

Nobody 2

Hutch is back and killing those who threaten his family vacation.

The Amateur

A great spy flick with Remi Malek as a geeky analyst out to avenge his murdered wife.

The Worst Movies of 2025

Fountain of Youth

I was really looking forward to this adventure flick featuring some of my favorite actors with a great director, but it just doesn’t work. Not a bad movie but considering the monumental waste of talent, worst movie of the year.

Electric State

This was so bad that I couldn’t watch it. I gave up on it after several tries which I just don’t do, especially for sci fi. Usually. I made an exception in this case.

2025 Superlatives:

Best Comedy: Fackham Hall

Best Horror Movie:  Weapons

Best Drama:  Caught Stealing

Best Romance:  Novocain

Best Action:  Ballerina

Best Special Effects:   Mission Impossible Final Reckoning

Best Scene of the Year:  I couldn’t decide which was better so I’ll include both.

The scene in Sinners where you’re shown the dance floor through different generations, a great comment on America and race relations.

The final scene in Weapons The move spent two hours building up Amy Madigan’s “Aunt Gladys” as the master of reality and then, with the snap of a twig and a tiny, understated “Oh no,” that veneer explodes. She races for dear life ahead of a horde of kids with no sense of self-preservation.

Into Each Life

A little, etc. etc. While I am safely ensconced in a true paradise, my body seems to have rebelled against the increased fun. I can’t lift my left arm to shoulder level without a sharp pain in that shoulder. I’m pretty sure it’s just a case of tendonitis after a lot of lifting during the move in, a daily swim workout, and then some extended boogie boarding. The upshot being I can’t boogie board or swim until it calms down. It’s funny how much you have to lift your left arm daily. I get a stark reminder every time I forget. Adding insult to injury, my resident nurse, my Favorite Panamanian, is not in residence. After a very fun weekend with her mom and Tia Loca with us, she returned to David to accomplish the usual January requirements, like getting our car registered.

Last Night Sunset Social Hour with Upstairs Neighbors
Keeping the Faith Sunday
The Upstairs Neighbors, stalwart friends that they are, provide the needed assistance and social contact I find lacking in my wife’s absence. In addition to the proverbial rain referenced above, we had two sunsets in a row rained out. Not that we need a visible sunset to have our sunset social hour. La Nina is apparently affecting Panama as well with a delayed dry season arrival. We snuck one in yesterday when the sun set through a hole in the clouds. I know I shouldn’t be complaining since we are still in a tropical paradise. I also saw on the news today that New England will experience an ice storm tonight. That being the case, I’ll publish the photos of that beautiful sunset here to help lift morale. It’s what I do.

Since I can’t use my left arm for much of anything, I dragged out a spare table yesterday to work on a puzzle. It helped that my wife wasn’t in residence to object. Keene Friend gifted me a puzzle with a picture of one of the KHS class of ’73 mini reunions we had a few years ago. It was strange seeing well-known faces, including my own, emerge as the pieces came together. Since I was sans boogie board, I finished it fairly quickly. The best news is that three of the faces from that photo will be joining us in March. The guy in a red sweatshirt (Keene Friend 2) and the guys on either side (Keene Friend and the Cantankerous Friend). I’m excited to host them as their travel plans are coming together. In the meantime, the picture of the puzzle overlooking the beach will have to suffice.

The Puzzle

Looking onto Beach
Back in the States, school vacation has ended for granddaughters. They seemed to have mad ethe most of it, with the NH bunch skiing and the FBR hanging with her neighborhood friends. She attended a women’s professional hocky game last weekend with those friends and had a great time. She also appeared on the jumbotron which was a true highlight. That makes two jumbotron appearances within one year for her since she, along with the BRS and BR3, appeared with me when the WooSox honored me as a veteran in August. That marks a significant accomplishment since the FBR had tried mightily at prior games during between innings dance contests but never made it to the big screen. She looked very happy at the hockey game.

Back in August
Finally, a sad note, I swing by my hometown newspaper online each day and saw that a beloved member of my early life had passed away. My Auntie Lee was a fixture in my household form my earliest days. She was a close friend of my mom and we lived across the street from each other for a number of years. Each Christmas when I returned home for Christmas during my Army career, a stop at Auntie Lee and Uncle Gus’ house was a highlight. She made my Favorite Panamanian feel truly welcomed. SHE made it to her nineties but we hadn’t seen her in a couple years as her health deteriorated. She takes with her so many great memories. I won’t make her funeral tomorrow but both my wife and I will be there in spirit to honor this fabulous lady. I feel a real sense of an end of an era with her passing. She was the last vestige of my parents’ generation that was still around. The last of their close friends to depart. Rest in Peace Auntie Lee, you will be missed.

Kickoff Complete

Well, here I am, in 2026 and in our tropical paradise winter home. That’s all to the good, especially considering alternatives to each situation. It also feels like the first day since before Christmas that I’ve been able to sit back and take a breath. The time between Christmas and New Years was filled with celebrating, then getting down here, and situated. The situating part was seriously involved since my Favorite Panamanian decreed we had to raise the condo to her cleanliness standards (nowhere near as easy as it sounds). Once we achieved that, we returned to David to celebrate New Years Eve with her family.

New Years Eve
If there is one thing you can say about Panamanians, it is they now how to party – to celebrate life. My wife’s sister-in-law had discovered an offer that included a hotel room, dinner, a rooftop disco from 10:30pm to 6am on 1 Jan (as I said they know about partying), and a breakfast. We signed up for this along with Tia Loca, my mother in law as well as the aforementioned brother and sister-in-law. The Hotel Ciudad David proved to be a very modern hotel with great amenities. Another thing about Panamanians, the women certainly know how to dress up. We assembled in the dining room for dinner, and I had to assert a serious amount of self-discipline. My wife was keeping a very close eye on me as a veritable parade of Panamanian pulchritude dressed to the nines passed by. Dinner was a lot of fun and allowed for the obligatory posed pictures in front of the 2026 balloons.

Okay, Enough with the Photos

Sisters
We lingered over dinner until it was time to head upstairs to the roof. My wife was a little put out that there wasn’t a dedicated dance floor but that didn’t turn out to be a problem as everyone just danced wherever they were situated. The roof allowed sweeping views over the city of David, a fairly substantial city. The real treat happened at midnight when the entire skyline lit up. Fireworks are semi-legal in Panama and traditionally are set off at the New Year’s arrival. For twenty minutes there was a constant ring of fireworks for 360 degrees. It was something I’ll never forget. The attached video doesn’t do it justice. Keep in mind this was all private individuals. It was amazing they didn’t burn the city down, but they’re experienced at it and it provided a fantastic show.

We got our dancing in, and this included my 93-year-old mother-in-law. Once again, partying is in Panamanian’s blood. We had a great time on the roof dancing in the new year although we didn’t make the six-a.m. cut off. We had to make some acknowledgement to our no longer completely young bodies. We did, however, demonstrate to the much younger crowd that we were still in the game. I was on short rest the next morning when I woke up as I was on a mission. Each year upon our return to Panama, I am charged with preparing a typical American turkey dinner to celebrate the new year. This started decades ago when my father-in-law pronounced my turkey the best he’d ever tasted. I’m not sure I’m grateful for the endorsement.

Anyways. I left my sleeping Favorite Panamanian in the hotel room as I set out for Las Lajas around 8am to put the turkey in the oven. I had prepped the bird the day before. It was strange driving out of David. I felt I was in some post apocalyptic horror movie because the city streets were deserted. While that was a welcome relief from the usually onerous traffic, it felt surreal. The usual bustling city was sleeping off the prior night’s celebratory efforts. My wife stayed for breakfast with her family at the hotel and then drove down to the beach with them.

Turkey Dinner Time

I got the turkey in the oven, had breakfast, and got in a quick swim workout before starting in the potato peeling. There was a welcome respite from that when I got the opportunity welcome the Upstairs Neighbors who had arrived while we were in David. Since our Panamanian Friends were also in their condo downstairs we had the Seis Amigos together for the first time in a long time. The condo AC was severely tested with the arrival of my wife and her family while three burners as well the oven were going full blast for the dinner prep.

Sunset Crew
The Upstairs Neighbors joined us for the dinner and brought along a truly fabulous chocolate cake (just add another day to my post-Christmas cookie engendered workout regimen). We had to set up another table to accommodate the whole dinner crew but it was a fun time with jokes flying in both Spanish and English. By the time the tryptophan was kicking in it was time to adjourn to the beach for the sunset ceremony. The sun was a little shy, hiding behind a thick cloud but the rest of the sky lit up with appreciable effect. The main point though, as always, was the gathering. This nightly social hour is one of the things I missed most about our time away from Las Lajas and we had a representative bunch with my wife’s family and the Upstairs Neighbors in attendance as well as the nearby rest of the Seis Amigos. So. 2026 is off to a great start and I can finally take a breath (until my Favorite Panamanian sees me underemployed).
