Showers Everywhere

I posted the spectacular sunset from last Thursday on Facebook and thought it would be the start of a nightly devotion to our Las Lajas sunsets. Unfortunately, the rainy season is being unreasonably persistent and that was the only good one we’ve had, until tonight. That was a fluke as well as there was only one break in the clouds in the entire sky and it was happily over the area the sun was sinking into the Pacific. We had a full crew for the sunset ceremony, the upstairs neighbors, Tia Loca and my Favorite Panamanian. The condo complex was as packed as I’ve ever seen it as well. The first weekend of the new year apparently means party time in Panama. I want to go on record as saying I am completely in accordance with that. The sun was just about to sink below the horizon when it started raining on us. I’ve never seen the Panamanians move that fast. The crowded beach was virtually empty two minutes later.

Pizza Group Last Night

Message Received
We had a great weekend with a First Friday of the Week pizza night in the village. In addition to the upstairs neighbors and our crew, we had the Canadians from down the beach and a friend of theirs. Earlier in the evening, during the Family Facetime call, the FBR gave me strict orders to communicate with the pizza place owner’s small dog. I was to inform him to not worry about the loss of his partner because she was coming in a month. I passed that on to the dog in both English and Spanish. It was a fun night with this eclectic group. I’ve said it before and this was prima facie evidence of it, when you put excellent people together, fun will be had.

Crowded Condo Complex
For lunch today, we traveled down the beach to my wife’s favorite beachfront restaurant, Plinio’s. We noticed from signage that he had moved in our absence. He was now in residence at the campground just down the beach from us that held so many memories. It was where I first fell in love with this beach. We had so many vacations there over the years before we had the condo. I remembered Toni’s overpacked small bus, laden with the entire family descending on it as we took up residence for a few days. It was where Wingman almost asked for my daughter’s hand in marriage until he figured it was safer to write me from Japan with the request. It is also an important historical site. It was the one place where Keene Friend actually danced. Tia Loca is the only woman in my experience able to motivate him to dance. I’m surprised there isn’t a historical plaque documenting this. I re-acquainted myself with the resident dogs, one of whom reminds me so much of Buddy the Wonder Pooch. That dog informed me I wasn’t through patting him by jumping into my lap.

There was an important shower of another kind back in frigid New England. Great Aunt hosted a baby shower for Namesake Nephew’s beloved. She’s due to deliver Great Aunt’s first grandchild in about a month. Both the ABFA and my daughter traveled to be there for the event. I had to make do with the beach which isn’t halfway hard as it sounds. Great Aunt sent us their gift registry so that was taken care of. I worry about Providence as the husbandless ABFA and my daughter are free to terrorize it tonight. Pray for Providence.

2024 in Movies

I don’t claim to be any kind of movie critic, just a movie nut. I present, as evidence, my list of the best and worst movies of 2024, which could induce gastrointestinal disruption to any serious movie critic. What can I say, I just love movies that entertain, not so much that teach or make some kind of obscure ethical lesson. As promised/threatened what follows is my rundown of the best and worst movies I saw this year. I am an unashamed movie fanatic.  Each year I pontificate on the best and worst from only the movies I went to see. I’ve also included what I considered to be the worst movies of the year, because that’s almost more fun. You won’t find my movies on many critics top ten for the year because we go to the movies for different reasons. I go to be entertained not to judge. I’ve also chosen a quote from each of the top ten movies. As you can see I lean heavily towards action (and science fiction) but I think these films are a lot more mainstream than the out of touch film critics whose top tens are usually incomprehensible and barely entertaining. If nothing else the films below (except for the bottom two) were hugely enjoyable. Again this is only one man’s opinion and reflects only the movies I saw this year.

Best Movies

#1 – The Beekeeper. A perfect vehicle for Statham as a semi-retired government fixer/assassin. He goes after a well connected rich boy running an internet company that specializes in stealing personal info and stealing from senior citizens, a target rich environment. Complete escapism, but that’s what made it so much fun.

Quote:

Derek: You're scared.

Wallace: Dead right I'm scared. Terrified. So should you be.

Derek: Wallace, just tell me what the fuck this guy is.

Wallace: He's probably the last pair of eyes that you're going to sneer at.

#2 – The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.  A surprise for me in that I didn’t expect to like this so much. A great cast of action actors in a World War 2 scenario. I was also surprised to find this was based on a real world unit. Of course, I’ll enjoy anything with Eiza González in it.

Quote:

Marjorie Stewart: It's one thing taking over the world, but do they have to take over the kitchen too? It's all sausage, cabbage and black bread.

Heron: We're between a rock and a hard place. If the Brits win the war, we're stuck with fish and chips. If the Germans win the war, we're stuck with this menu.

#3 – Deadpool and Wolverine. They finally got together! After getting repeatedly joked about in the prior two movies Deadpool finally got his Wolverine and it was just too funny as they unsuccessfully try to keep killing each other. The non-stop cameos were hilarious, a fitting send off to Deadpool.

Quote:

Deadpool: [after she's captured by Deadpool using Juggernaut's helmet] You're gonna send us home or I'm gonna twist your f*cking head off.

Deadpool: [Cassandra laughs] Why are you laughing?

Cassandra Nova: I can't send you unless you get this thing off my head. And as soon as you do that, I'm going to boil your brains on an atomic level whilst flicking my bean to the Enya box set.

Deadpool: There's an Enya box set?

#4 – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I thought this was a stretch, but Keaton delivers once again. They took all the original characters and made you love them again. Ortega was perfect cast as Lydia’s daughter.

Quote:

Beetlejuice: You know, Bob, long distance relationships can be difficult, especially when one of you is dead and the other is ignoring you for thirty years. But Lydia and I, we have definite psychic connection, and I'll tell you something, she definitely saw me that last time. I felt a little tingle.

#5 – Dune Part 2. A stirring epic by anyone’s definition.  Chalamet soars as Paul in the massive battle against his father’s killers. Incredible job taking such a complicated plot and making it so watchable.

Quote:

Jessica: Your father didn't believe in revenge.

Paul: Yeah well, I do.

#6 – Here. You almost have to be a senior citizen for the message of this incredible movie to resonate. Looking at various families moving through a single space over hundreds of years. I know it didn’t fare well at box office but the impact early life decisions have on every one’s life was elegantly brought to the screen by two amazing actors.

Quote:

Richard: You know, if you like, you could spend the rest of the night here.

Margaret: I could spend the rest of my life here.

#7 – Venom the Last Dance. The usual fun when Venom and Eddie are having their internal discussions. Venom’s relatives come looking for a fight and the final showdown in Area 51 combines, action, humor, and dare I say, pathos.

Quote:

Venom: Eddie... my home has found us.

#8 – Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. A great look at the early life of the most compelling characters from Fury Road. It made you realize where that haunted look in that movie’s character came from. As usual, the crazed action scenes from director Miller were worth the price of admission themselves.

Quote:

Praetorian Jack: This place at the end of your map of secrets. Where is it? {Furiosa pulls away from him] My mother and father were soldiers. Even as the world fell, they yearned to be warriors for a virtuous cause. For them, it never happened. I wanna help you find this place, wherever it may be.

Furiosa: Come with me.

#9 – Young Woman and the Sea. I didn’t say I hated all “message” movies. I watched this with my granddaughter and was so happy she reveled in the message of female empowerment. Ederle is a heroine for the ages.

Quote:

Young Trudy Ederle: If Meg swims, I swim!

#10 – Borderlands. I wasn’t encumbered with any knowledge of the game this was based on so I could just sit back and enjoy a great sci fi action movie. Any cast with Jamie Lee and Cate in it will be worth a watch.

Quote:

Lilith: I have something you'll *never* have.

Atlas: What's that ?

Lilith: Enough.

Honorable Mention –

The Fall Guy – Gosling continues his hot streak as a put upon stunt man in this tribute film to stunt men.

Gladiator 2 – would have rated this in the top ten if not for the sharks in the coliseum. Other than that overreach, this was a fitting sequel to the original.

The Worst Movies of 2024

Madame Web
– don’t know how they made such a bad movie with such a great cast, Marvel’s fall continues.

Joker Folie Ă  Deux. What the hell were they thinking! How do you follow up Joker with this? Tried really hard to watch/understand this, failed.

2024 Superlatives:

Best Comedy:  Deadpool and Wolverine

Best Horror Movie:  Alien Romulus

Best Drama:  Here

Best Romance:  Deadpool and Wolverine

Best Action:  Beekeeper

Best Special Effects:   Dune Part 2

Best Scene of the Year:  Post credit scene in Deadpool and Wolverine where Johnny Storm tells Deadpool to say to the villainess exactly what eventually gets Storm killed.

Año Nuevo, Condo Style!!

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you had a small fraction of the fun I had on New Years Eve. I owe that entirely to my Favorite Panamanian’s spectacular family who joined us at our condo to welcome in 2025. That include my 92-year-old mother-in-law who joined the dance floor along with the rest of us. It’s no secret where my wife inherited her dancing genes from. We had just finished the hectic move in phase which involved a lot of cleaning, a constant theme in my life over the past few days. My wife’s two sisters and her mom showed up late on the 31st and the party got underway. We were joined later by her brother and his partner to complete the group. My brother-in-law arrived with a fully cooked pork roast, the typical New Year’s Eve dinner.

First Photo of 2025
The Panamanian tradition is to have a very late and large dinner on New Years’ Eve. In our younger years, this meant after midnight. Since the word “younger” no longer applies we ate around 10pm. It was a fun meal; the type you have when a close family gets together. I’m truly blessed to be included in this bond with my wife’s family. As soon as the dinner dishes were cleared the dancing started, including everybody. Tia Loca and her brother had their usual back and forth, which is always entertaining.

If you look at the accompanying photos, you’ll see one with Tia Loca sitting in the background. My wife laughed so hard when she zoomed into see the expression on Tia Loca’s face. It is funny. I thought about sectioning it off and including it here but that would be too cruel. When she heard I had zoomed in, she said if I posted it here, she would never visit us again. This, of course, had me changing my mind again, more than ready to post it. Cooler heads prevailed, mainly because of threats of bodily harm from my Favorite Panamanian. The champagne flowed at midnight and we all moved out onto the balcony where we enjoyed the fireworks a number of people were setting off along the beach. Fireworks are mostly legal in Panama and I was impressed with the number and quality of the show. There were no large secondary explosions, so I believe everything ignited safely.

The Photo I Wrote About

Wife's Knee, Fully Recovered

I enjoyed the first full day of sun we’ve had since our arrival on the first day of 2025. That meant the morning workout, including boogie boarding, started up. I had the entire beach to myself, which wasn’t surprising given how late the locals partied the night before. My own stable of Panamanians followed a similar tack and thought I was a bit “loco” to be up that early and exercising to boot. If I’m going to party like that, I need to pay the piper if I don’t want to approach 300 pounds. In a very good sign, I caught the first three waves for good rides before my usual mediocrity asserted itself.

Watching the Fireworks from our Balcony

I’ve added new gear to my beach accoutrement this year, inspired by my less than pleasant time spent on the dermatology surgery floor. I wore a swim cap for the first time in my life to protect the top of my head where I had such a painful experience with the dermatologist’s scalpel. I also wore swim shoes to protect the foot which caused me so many problems last year. I’ll have to learn a new launch technique, as a couple times the shoes came off my heels and I had to hang on with my toes to prevent them from disappearing into the ocean deep. Having to do that ruined a couple really good rides. As I read what I just wrote, I realize I’m literally falling apart. I won’t go down without a fight though.

With my New Years' Eve Date

New Years' Eve Dinner
I have become unjustifiably famous within my wife’s family for my turkey dinners. It started with my father-in-law who stated my turkey was far superior because it tasted like turkey and not overladen with the typical level of spices Panamanians use. His legacy remains that every year they buy a frozen turkey which I find waiting for me and am expected to cook along with the side dishes I usually prepare for Christmas and Thanksgiving. I was a little taken aback when I started peeling the sweet potatoes to find them a deep purple instead of orange. My Favorite Panamanian assured me this was just another type (which she said was better) and I could prepare them the same way. I still found it a little disconcerting to serve something purple although I was assured everything, including the purple surprise, tasted great.

We almost got a true sunset last night although the clouds tried their best to intrude. Tia Loca and my wife joined us for what has become our nightly regimen to watch the sun sink into the Pacific. In a most welcome development, the upstairs neighbors arrived last night to complete our crew for upcoming nightly ceremonies. Friends and family back home are girding their loins to start receiving the nightly sunset pictures while they suffer through their New England winter. It’s what I do. We spoke to both kids last night while on the beach. My son said he might stop answering the phone at this time of day if I keep showing him the sunset. My daughter reported the FBR stayed up till midnight to welcome in 2025 but still awoke at 6:30 am the next morning. So, welcome to 2025, it’s off to a great start, so far. Stand by for sunset photos.
