Finally Some Good News

In my dedicated fight to maintain my hard-won weight loss I’ve lost more territory than the Russians have recently in Ukraine. I blame it completely on my Favorite Panamanian as I feel like I put on two pounds every time I walk through the kitchen with the air heavily laden with Christmas cookie baking odor. On top of that I hold the cherished position of cookie taster, which according to the FBR in a recent discussion, is an important, almost sacred, position. We had so much fun discussing this the other night. It just means a few extra laps in the pool and a few more miles on the bicycle, but more than worth it.

FBR During our Discussion

Part of Today's Challenge
Red Sox nation is in turmoil with the loss of Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres. I’m very sad to see him go but I’m glad the Sox didn’t mortgage their future by matching the 11-year deal he got. He was the heart of the team but, saying that, last year’s team didn’t show a lot of fight. He’s a great player and ambassador of the game but he outpriced his value to the Sox.  All too often, before this golden age of Boston sports, the local teams would hang onto beloved figures well behind their expiration dates. Their last offer to Bogaerts was for six years which would have been fine. They know they already have their shortstop of the future, Marcelo Mayer, busting his way through the minors and they needed the financial flexibility to sign Devers next year. If they fail there, I’m out.

Bye Bye Bogie
Oh yeah, as to the title, as you may have heard I operate under strict orders from Great Aunt to keep her informed about my health conditions. She doesn’t feel I have either the intellect or maturity (you choose) to make informed decisions on same. Today was my two-year follow-up for my prostate removal and it truly was all good news. My PSA count is still undetectable, totally cancer free at this point, and my next visit in June will be the last follow-up. So, all good news although I temper my joy, knowing others aren’t as lucky. Still a reason to celebrate, oh, and it just so happens to be the First Friday of the Week!! Let the games begin!

Dia De La Madre

Since today is December the 8th my Favorite Panamanian and I have our annual discussion concerning Mother’s Day. Today is Mother’s Day in Panama and it is a lot bigger deal than it is here, a bona fide national holiday. Family is still revered down there, kind of why I like it so much. Our discussion centers around whether she wants to celebrate Mother’s Day in May or in December. As a cold weather averse personality, May always wins out. That is the deal we’ve always struck, if we were in Panama on the 8th, we would celebrate it and vice versa in May. I always try to make her feel special on this day because she’s kind of a great person who deserves every day to be Mother’s Day. She’s upstairs right now continuing to bake Christmas cookies (I said she was great, didn’t I?). I feel like I put on a couple pounds just walking through the kitchen and inhaling the wonderful smell of the cookies.

My Favorite Panamanian Moms

She used to have a very truthful T-shirt that said, Army Wife – Toughest Job in the Army. As I said, truthful, because I dragged her out of her native country and around the world wile I left her to raise two high spirited kids while I was running around less nice parts the world and the surrounding woods with well-armed friends for long periods of time. One only has to look at the resulting adults, my Favorite Son and Favorite Daughter to realize what a fantastic job she did in that effort. So happy Mother’s Day to my wife as well as all the other Panamanian mothers who’ve made such a difference in my life: my Mom-in-law (90 years and going strong), Tia Loca (still crazy after all these years), the Neighborhood Mafioso (great neighbor, the reason we live in Worcester), the various and sundry other members of the Panamanian mafia (great party animals as well), the various PanaGals (foremost amongst them being my wife’s cousins), oh, and that daughter I mentioned above (could not be more proud of the mother she is).

Two movies fell in my A-Z effort, both keepers, Congo (Laura Linney should do more action – she was awesome) and Cool Hand Luke (one of greatest movie characters of all time and definitely the best car washing scene ever filmed)

Blonde Reunion

I know there are those of you (with too much time on your hands) leaping to the obvious conclusion that the title refers to some sordid episode from my past where my fondness for ladies of the blonde persuasion was rumored. Nothing could be further than the truth and I apologize for the prurient interests that may have been aroused. The reunion in question was engineered by a silver haired lady I like to call my Favorite Panamanian. She was deep into Christmas cookie preparation (holy work to be sure) when she asked me about a favorite dish my mother used to make – blonde brownies (see totally innocent). My mother, who as a working nurse and single mother, had very little time to cook although she was very good at it (except for Welsh Stew – Yecch!).

The Master at Work

The Blonde Brownies
I retreated to the Man Cave where it is relatively safe from the awesome temptation of the cookie baking assault on the olfactory senses. When I emerged, she hesitantly asked me if she had got it right. I was looking at a plate of the brownies that were in some ways my mother’s signature dish which I hadn’t tasted since her demise nearly twenty years ago. They were perfect and came with so many memories, including fighting my sisters for the desired inside pieces. Most of all it brought mom back for just a bit, which was nice. My first Christmas gift received, totally cool.

Yesterday's Other Creations

As we move further and further away from World War 2, memories are started to fade for the newest generations. I grew up in an era where virtually everybody’s parents had fought in or lived through the War. It was an indelible part of everybody’s life. So today, December 7th, was a big day to remember, certainly not to celebrate though. It was the day the Japanese Empire made the worst strategic mistake of its long history. It fully awoke the sleeping giant. It is a valuable history lesson for would be antagonists to this day. So, let’s celebrate the heroes, 900 of which still lay entombed in the USS Arizona at the bottom of Pearl Harbor.

Remember this Day
To get away from the untenable temptations my Favorite Panamanian was concocting in the kitchen yesterday, I snuck out for a movie. Violent Night will never be a heartwarming Christmas movie but it is a lot of fun and a lot of heart is on display, some of it literally. David Harbour, of Stranger Things fame, is truly awesome as an alcoholic Santa bemoaning a drop in Christmas spirit and the rise of materialism. He stumbles, literally (damned massage chair), into an armed gang’s takeover of a super-rich family’s Christmas. Hijinks ensue as we learn of Santa’s origins as a Viking warrior which means the appearance of a sledge hammer is very bad news for the bad guys. Some very violent and very funny scenes follow as virtually every venerable Christmas item, from candy canes to ornaments, is put to deadly use. Mrs. Clark Griswold plays the dastardly family matriarch but her granddaughter, as the only one who believes (and activates) Santa, steals the movie in a very Home Alone way. All this is done to traditional Christmas music in the background. It’s bloody but It’s also so much fun, pure escapism.

Two movies fell in my A-Z effort, both keepers, Conan the Destroyer (Ahnuld learned to speak English between the movies, nowhere near as good as original) Conan the Barbarian (the new one with Jason Momoa, better than I thought when I first saw it)

Transformation Complete

I’m usually going into deep (and I mean really deep) Christmas spirit around this time of year. As soon as Thanksgiving is over I immediately launch into immersing myself in my favorite holiday of the year. This year has been a little different. It’s been a year of excruciatingly painful loss on both sides of my family. So many memories of the season are tied up with the departed that it’s taken me longer than usual to get cranked up. Thankfully, that is starting to happen. Chief amongst those reasons would be how pissed Soxfather would be if he impacted our Christmas in a negative fashion, he loved it as much as I do.

The House Last Night
We’re not doing the extensive outdoors lighting display this year (YES!!) because we’re leaving for Panama earlier than our usual January deployment. I also finally retired the damnable illuminated reindeer that have been a constant source of irritation for the past couple years (felt great stomping them into trash bag size). My Favorite Panamanian, who’s upstairs preparing Christmas cookies as I write this (SCORE!!!), has completed her annual transformation of the house into a holiday wonderland. Every plant has its own set of lights which is a pain each night turning them off but I cannot argue with the effect. She’s put me knee deep back into the pool of Christmas spirit. Granted, I usually fully immersed by now, but that’s coming.

Granddaughter Ready, Except for the Presents
This whole A-Z movie effort has become something of an obsession. It’s kind of what I had planned when I retired but it’s taken on a life of its own. I didn’t even check in on the Monday night football game last night and there are several TV series that I have queued up that I’ve totally ignored (including Yellowstone!). This is weird. On the other hand I’m truly enjoying this march through my movie library, validating (mostly) the movies that I own. I’ve made my way through the reorganization of the shelves in the mid-Cs that the FBR and BRS undertook. I wonder what’s going to happen to my fragile psyche when I have to leave the movies behind for the winter (beach is more fun anyways).

Obligatory Nativity Scene
I finally got to watch 3000 Year of Longing, a movie that slipped though the theaters way too fast. This featured two of my favorite actors in Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Elba plays a literal genie in a bottle released by Swinton ins a trip to Istanbul. This movie is made by George Miller of Mad Max and Fury Road fame so the visuals are appropriately stunning as the genie recounts his long, sad existence imprisoned in the bottle. I loved the central role the importance of story telling plays in the plot. The movie soars though the first two thirds as Swinton and Elba get to know each other but suffers a bit, stumbling across the finish line when they move to England. Well, that happens. Still, a lot of fun watching these two chewing up the scenery in story telling mode.

Two movies fell in my A-Z effort, both keepers, Con Air (total guilty pleasure but what a ride, Cage at his wildest) and Conan the Barbarian (Ahnuld looks so much like the amazing Frazzetta illustration on the book covers – glad they didn’t let him talk a lot, Milius is a genius)

You’ve Got to be Kidding

Since we live in such polarizing times, I have refrained from adding fuel to the fire since so many people seem to enjoy that particular heat. However, I can’t sit back and listen to the Trumpster’s latest. He recently called for the suspension of the Constitution when he doesn’t like the rules. This is a man (using term lightly) who swore an oath to support and defend that same document. This is the type of incendiary rhetoric that you find in 3rd world countries and autocracies. The Constitution may not be perfect but it is the absolute bedrock of this country. With each passing statement I become more convinced that our former president is one of those enemies (foreign and domestic) referred to in the same oath I took. He’s acting like an agent for a foreign power (we all know who) that wants to weaken our country. I still don’t get how any rational person can support this buffoon. I love this country too much to do that. Luckily some more moderate Republicans are emerging which gives me hope for 2024.

After that political rant I’ll revert back to some recent humor discovered online. I’m not funny enough to think of this myself but each of these made me laugh. I have no idea if the claims are true either:

“At this point I ordered so much stuff, I don't even know what's happening. If UPS shows up with llama today, it is what it is.”

Early aircraft throttles had a ball on the end of it, in order to go full throttle the pilot had to push the throttle all the way forward into the wall of the instrument panel. Hence "balls to the wall" for going very fast.

During WWII, U.S. Airplanes were armed with belts of ammo, which they would shoot during dogfights and on strafing runs. These belts were folded into the wing compartments that fed their machine guns. These belts measure 27 feet and contained hundreds of cartridges. Often times, the pilots would return from their missions having expended all of their bullets on various targets. They would say, "I gave them the whole nine yards," meaning they used up all of their ammunition.

Did you know the saying "God willing and the creek don't rise" was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? It was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century. He was a politician and Indian diplomat. While in the South, Hawkins was requested by the President to return to Washington. In his response, he was said to write, "God willing and the Creek don't rise." Because he capitalized the word "Creek" he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water.

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington have him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted.  Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.'

As incredible as it sounds, not so long ago, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October). Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig'. Today we often use the term here comes the 'Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide bench folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the bench. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man. Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'

Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt. Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'

Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in 'straight laced' wore a tightly tied corset.

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.'

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's, radios nor internet, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'

At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A barmaid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in pints and who was drinking in quarts, hence the phrase 'minding your Ps and Qs.'

One more: bet you didn't know this! In the heyday of sailing ships, all warships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be tacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem; how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The  solution was a metal plate called a 'Monkey' with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it.  The solution to the rusting problem was to make 'Brass Monkeys.' Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts greater, and much faster than iron when it's chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would roll right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, 'Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.'

Five movies fell in my A-Z effort, all keepers, Collateral Beauty (move really touchs me, especially Michael Pena sub-plot), Collateral Damage (Governator at his peak, okay maybe a bit past it), Coumbiana (love Zoe in everything she does, great action), Color of Night (erotic thriller, you had me at erotic), Commancheros (the DUKE!!! loved his ‘mon soor” treatment of Whitman).

Still Don’t Get It

I know this is nigh on bordering hypocritical, as a baseball fan, but I still do not understand why soccer is so beloved around the world. I’ve been giving it a shot over the past couple weeks with the Word Cup ongoing in Qatar. It seems, at least at this world class level, that is more a game of keep away than trying to score continually. I know, in making this statement, that I’ve stepped on some very sensitive toes who are leaping to defend toothier beloved “beautiful game”. It just seems that most of the game is one side passing the ball back and forth around midfield and then a couple of halfhearted attempt to penetrate. Sorry and yes, I do realize how boring baseball is. Also.

It's been a boring couple of days here at the casa. I should qualify that by saying life with my Favorite Panamanian is never boring in the strictest sense. It’s just that nothing of note has happened and we’ve been homebodies except for the odd errand or shopping expedition (her not me). I managed to scare the hell out of myself but I’m not sure that qualifies as true relief. I somehow froze my keyboard with some sort of unintended keystroke. I didn’t know what the hell happened other than while everything on the computer was working but I couldn’t type anything. I immediately thought of my daughter’s repeated encouragements to get my computer’s screen repaired and thought this is what had caused it. I had images of weeks without the computer and this would be a big deal since all the bills are paid this way. I frantically went through my usual procedures of turning the computer on and off with no results. I was on the verge of activating the emergency IT team (son, daughter, Wingman, ABFA) when I noticed a small message stating “unlock keyboard?”. Yep, I had somehow locked myself out of my own keyboard. Since I’m typing this I obviously figured it out.

Last night’s First Friday Family Facetime call relieved that ennui although we were witnesses to the first ever, official “time out” for BR3. I’ve written before that she is a feisty one who likes to buck authority just to see the resultant reaction. During the call she crossed a line with her dad that even her remarkable amount of charm was incapable of rescuing her from. Her dad told her to stop hitting the BRS, so she stopped looked directly at him, turned around and hit her again (like I said, feisty). This resulted in that first ever, official, time out. It was not well received. I tried to cheer my son up, because we all know while discipline is necessary it can be heartbreaking, by telling him her teenage years will be fun. (that was probably the beer talking)

And She Looks Like Such an Angel
I snuck out for a second movie on Thursday seeing The Menu. This promised to be a lot of fun as it supposedly poked a serious amount of fun at the super-rich and their bone deep pretentiousness; talk about a target rich environment. While there was a lot of that, it really didn’t deliver. Ralph Fiennes and especially Anya Taylor-Jones do deliver superbly but it turns out to be in a fairly silly effort. Fiennes portrays a psychotic, world class chef who invites a group of the super-rich to his private island for food and murder. The super-rich were appropriately horrible but I think even they would have fought harder than they do. Death isn’t something meekly accepted, even by a-holes. Worth seeing though for Taylor-Jones and Fiennes.

Three movies fell in my A-Z effort, all keepers, Cold Light of Day (panned by critics but I liked it), Cold Pursuit (Neeson as a vengeful snowplow driver, sneakily funny throughout), and Collateral (might be Cruise’s best performance, he does ominous well).

Autobiographical Cinema and That Tree Again

As you can see form the attached photo my Favorite Panamanian has performed her usual magic with the Christmas tree. After I draped the light sets on, she assumed control and I was left to my forte, carrying storage cases up and down from the basement. The results speak for themselves. She certainly has the touch. She was even polite when informing me that my assistance was no longer required.

BRS Writing an Eternal Truth
The BRS made a statement in her pre-school class today with what she wrote on the pad. She said her cousins make her happy. I’ve always ben a proponent of the fact that “there is something special about cousins” and it warmed my heart to see my granddaughter realizing this intrinsic facet of life. I just wish they didn’t have to start enjoying each other’s company in the bedroom next to ours at 5am, but again, I digress.

The Tree
Since my Favorite Panamanian launched on some Christmas shopping with the neighborhood Mafioso I was left to own devices (always a dangerous proposition). That led me inevitably to the movie theater (I know – shocking) where I saw the Fablemans. This is definitely Steven Spielberg’s most autobiographical film ever. I’m guessing he waited for a number of years to pass before doing a deep dive into his childhood. It was fascinating to watch, especially after seeing a special on his life last week. He tells the story with grace and humor but still acknowledging the hard edges. His high school years were especially poignant with the racism he faced as well as his parents’ breakup. Paul Dano and Michelle Williams soar as the diametrically opposed parents, Williams especially. She plays the slightly psychotic mother with the subtle edge she is so good at. Loved this exploration of one of the true genius. The scene with John Ford was worth the price of admission alone. A long movie that flew by.

Three movies fell in my A-Z effort, all keepers, Cloverfield (maybe the best home video movie ever made, startling and realistic destruction of NYC), 10 Cloverfield Lane (so taut, Winstead shines and John Goodman is an American treasure), and Cowboys and Indians (what!!!! 007 and Han Solo battling inconvenient aliens in the old west)
