Reclaiming Title and Early Morning Pelicans

My Favorite Panamanian and I are settling in beach life having unpacked almost everything. Yesterday our dedicated handyman arrived to address the locked closet door. I was a little mollified that his burglary attempts were as unsuccessful as my own blighted attempts the day before. He ended up drilling out the lock and replacing the entire handle. I assisted him re-installing the balcony blinds. These curtains block out the afternoon sun which really pelts that side of the condo during this time of year. The added benefit, I got to lean out over the three stories of height to assist; that is always fun. The brackets that hold the shades up are being worn away by the salt laden air, so I have to find replacements online as they won’t last beyond this year. Our handyman stands ready to create a homemade version but recommends we try to find factory made replacements.

I’ve also re-established my long-held title as the whitest man in Panama. Since the whole skin cancer situation started to manifest a few years ago I’ve taken great pains to maintain the pasty complexion I’ve been “blessed” with thanks to my English, Irish, Scottish, and Norwegian (I know weird) ancestors. I know my semi-annual skin screens with the dermatologist are now alerted to my annual Panamanian sojourns because I accidently mentioned it last year (she was very cute so my common sense predictably fled). I lather on the highest sun block I can find as well as wearing swim shirts and wide brimmed hats. I already stood out in Panama due to my height but now I gleam like a beached fish when compared with the beautiful skin tones the Panamanians boast.

It Was Pretty Spectacular

I have re-started my early morning workout routine where I have the entire beach to myself for miles in each direction. My only companions are dozens of low flying pelicans who cruise along the surf in long lines trying to score fish, I assume. I’ve always thought the last pelican in line must be hungry. Anyways, I do my ab workout beside the pool, then move to the beach for strength exercises, then boogie boarding (at least five rides all the way to the beach), and end with a swim workout in the pool. For that last part, since the pool is fairly small, I use my bungee cord invention strapped to my left leg to allow a true workout. Since I have to fight back through the surf, I count the boogie boarding as exercise. By the time I finish all this my Favorite Panamanian descends to join me for a couple mile walk on the beach. This gets us to around 10am and the sun is really starting to assert itself and we head inside for breakfast. Beach life, got to love it.

Through the Zone to Paradise

Alright, fair warning to my New England friends – this read is going to be painful, mostly because of the pictures of where I am right now. We finally arrived at our beachfront condo in Las Lajas, Panama yesterday after an epic trip through what I came to think of as a journey through some version of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone. After a few weeks of the hardest I’ve worked in years I’m ready for a rest. It should be noted those weeks followed my official final retirement from “work”. I blame it on my once and forever boss/commander-in-chief, the Favorite Panamanian. She insisted the house had to be clean enough to eat off the floors even though the only person in the house for the next couple months is the house sitter. I gave up years ago trying to understand the logic.

Sunset Walk on Beach Last Night

Our First 2022 Beach Sunset
We received eight inches of snow as a parting gift from New England on Friday which delayed our trip to New Jersey until Saturday. That trip went well but enroute we changed our plans to check into an airport hotel instead of staying with my daughter so she wouldn’t have to drive us to JFK at 2am. The FBR was immensely disappointed she wouldn’t have me to supervise Saturday afternoon but it was the right thing to do. My daughter drove us to the hotel which was helpfully right next to not only the airport but one of the largest garbage collection truck parks I’ve ever seen. Everything is outsized in the Big Apple. The hotel was fine, clean, and remarkably quiet despite the trucks and adjacent airport. I’m thinking some serious sound baffling construction techniques were employed.

What We Left Behind
We ordered pizza and hit the rack around 9pm. This does qualify as the earliest I’ve gone to bed since 1999 when I worked a midnight shift in the bowels of the Pentagon. This is the start of our trip through the mystery zone. The hotel advertised a 24-hour shuttle to the airport but upon checking in and our driver gone, we learned the shuttle didn’t start until 5am, three hours later than we would need it. The desk clerk assured me a taxi would be easy to acquire. We made our 1:30am wakeup and the taxi did appear which was helpfully large enough to handle our six suitcases (remember who I was traveling with). The drive was only three minutes but cost $40, probably the most expensive per-mile trip I’ve ever taken.

First Class!!
The 3am check in for the plane was fairly easy. We had to present our ministry of health docs to prove we were vaccinated. When we got to the check-in agent, I was informed I had been upgraded to First Class. I told the agent I wasn’t brave enough to accept that upgrade if my Favorite Panamanian wasn’t included. She laughed and said she would try but couldn’t promise so I took a boarding pass back in economy with a properly respected spouse. We arrived at the gate and I heard my name being called where I was once again informed I had been upgraded. I told the guy, again, I couldn’t take it without my wife and he said he would try to move her up as well. Two minutes later we were both upgraded. I emerged as a semi-hero for my traveling partner.

Lunch at Riande with Tia Loca
The seats in first class had footrests and felt like we were in recliners. We woke up long enough for breakfast which lived down to the reputation of airline food. I was anxiously awaiting scrambled eggs and Canadian bacon only to receive something I called egg soup surrounded by some sort of mini fried corn. I’m guessing I received some sort of vegetarian version of the meal I ordered and they certainly messed up choosing me to send it to. We slipped in and out of consciousness for the rest of the trip to Panama. We arrived to a completely empty terminal with only travelers allowed within the building. The usual crowd greeting arriving passenger was eerily absent.

On my Mother-in-Law's Front Porch with Wife's Family
We had a four-hour layover before our follow-on domestic flight up to David, my wife’s hometown. My sister-in-law, the infamous Tia Loca, and her son, who live in Panama City, drove to the airport and we went out to lunch together at Hotel Riande and the first Atlas beer of the trip. We’ve stayed there a couple of times over the year and always enjoyed the time there. We got a table overlooking the hotel pool with its usual stockpile of tropically attired patrons. It felt strange to watch people outside in a pool surrounded by palm trees after leaving the frozen wasteland of NYC just a few hours before. There was a particularly well-endowed young lady who was totally dominating a red, string bikini. I was busted by my Favorite Panamanian almost immediately after target acquisition but the arrest rate luckily did not match the level of offenses. I was so hungry at this point that when Tia Loca asked if I liked the hamburger I was devouring with a bare modicum of manners, I told her I would have eaten dog meat at this point.

Arrived at the Condo - Wife on our Balcony
After the very fun lunch we were back at the airport while I was once again explaining to the ticket agent that I couldn’t accept an upgrade without my wife. I was given seat next to her in economy and shortly after the plane loaded, we were called forward and once again moved into first class for the short flight to David. We arrived to find another empty terminal. Panama takes Covid a lot more seriously than the USA. Remember we were still in the “zone” because in a totally unprecedented event, ours were the first suitcases to arrive. Shortly thereafter they were loaded into my brother in law’s pickup truck and we were in our own car for the first time since last April headed to my mother in law’s home.

Surprise Waiting for us from Our Awesome Cleaning Crew
They had some cold Atlas beer ready for me and we gathered on the front porch to await some ordered pizza. We remained masked for the most part since we had traveled through three airports during the day and wanted to protect my wife’s family. That didn’t stop the almost constant laughter that ensued for the following three hours. They normally don’t sell beer on Sundays but when we took a chance the local bodega sold me some and my brother-in-law said the store owner remembered me from earlier trips and made an exception since I was such a good customer. Any port in a storm, I guess.

My View as I Write This
My wife went to the local farmer’s market Monday morning to buy fruit. I was able to avoid that trip but we both had to go to the grocery store to lay in the necessary supplies. We arrived at the condo after an hour-long drive and I felt a real sense of coming home when I opened the door and saw the surf breaking through the living room windows. My sister-in-law and another PanaGal had done us a huge favor and cleaned the place a couple days ago which saved us so much work.  The only problem was a lost key to a critical closet that held a lot of our long-term supplies. To add issue with that, a smoke alarm soon started up behind the locked closet door. We’ve got a guy coming in today to open it and install a new lock after my limited burglary efforts failed.

Beach This Morning

One of the biggest presents I got for Christmas was a device that would allow me to watch virtually any US channel as well as video on demand. I purposely packed an extension cord because I knew the device would need that in order to be close enough to connect with the TV. After unpacking, the cord was nowhere to be found. Either the TSA needed a spare cord or it accidently fell out during their baggage check. I was pissed because I was planning on watching the college football championship game. An hour later my wife emerged from the bathroom where she found an old cord we had there and the day was saved. In very short order I was connected and watching the game as if I was sitting in the Man Cave.

Report from Boston

No Such Issue Here
I was out on the deserted beach at first light for my daily workout and I once again marveled at the luck I felt at reaching this age healthy enough to still boogie board and swim and to have such a delightful place to accomplish both before breakfast. After a long beach walk with my wife, I turned on Good Morning America when we got back upstairs and the first scene I saw was a report from Boston about a polar vortex descending on a dangerously cold New England. I will admit I smiled a little bit. That wasn’t the only bad news I learned from back home. The Cobblestone Pub, one of the iconic stops on my annual hometown birthday pub crawl, burned to the ground. I texted a friend that extensive reconnaissance will be required ahead of this year’s crawl to ascertain the proper way to reconfigure the crawl. I know, sacrifices must be made. We are officially open to receiving guests – escape the cold and come see us.

Line of Departure

Okay! This will be my last post from the United States of America, hopefully, until April but I still have to accomplish the whole migration south which starts tomorrow. In a repeat of last year’s deployment we’re driving down to New Jersey and flying out of JFK since Copa doesn’t fly out of Boston any more (jerks). We need to fly Copa so we can check our bags all the way through to our final destination, David. If we flew another airline we would be stranded in Panama City since the only domestic flight to David is Copa and we would be limited to one bag each. Packing for a four month stay in less than four bags (I am accompanied by my wife after all), would be literally impossible.

Only Around 6" Today - Beach Here I come!
Since no deployment should occur without last minute situations, I noticed last night that the furnace was seeping some water onto the floor. I called the company that installed it last year and they came out this morning. It turned out to be a very minor problem solved in less than five minutes. The outside conduit to an evacuation pump had frozen over and he showed me how to fix that using some warm water. They came out earlier than expected so I had to get out with the snow blower before today’s storm ended. I saw the truck parked at the bottom of the street and wondered why he wasn’t coming up the plowed street. I was walking down to talk with him and soon had my answer as my feet shot out from under me and I was suddenly looking up to the sky with a very sore butt. The street was glare ice under the snow.

FBR is Happy with Our Travels to NJ
After that minor indignity I returned to the final tasks my Favorite Panamanian has assigned. In a huge surprise, I am in charge of cleaning the Man Cave. I was a little worried about cleaning the new popcorn machine but that turned out to be surprisingly easy. I’m rummaging around to insure all the necessary electronic devices are prepped for the move, not as easy as it sounds for a months long departure. It’s incredible how much of an electronic wagon train we’ve acquired over the past few years, all of which is now critical. We had hoped to drive down to New Jersey today but the storm put a kibosh on that. The snow is tapering of now and I’ll be back out there cleaning the driveway again. The beach is sounding better and better.

Healthy Questions

A couple of friends brought up an interesting thesis after yesterday’s post about my wife’s remarkable recovery from the stomach bug bequeathed to her during our most recent visit to my Favorite Son’s abode. They combined the fact that my wife was feeling better immediately after I also reported her malady resulted in me having to do a lot of the pre-deployment cleaning activities around the house. I want to go on record as stating I did not ascribe to these views, especially if my Favorite Panamanian is reading this. I joked with her about this exact same thing afterwards and she gave the same answer as I did on yesterday’s post. That this couldn’t be true because she’s one of those who values cleanliness with Godliness and we all know how religious she is. She then went on to point out that my standards in the cleanliness department do not even approach hers so as to suggest anything other than a true sickbed allowing these important tasks to fall to me is ludicrous. I don’t think it was one of those thou dost protest too much situations either.

We’re down to the last few pre-deployment tasks, outside of my Favorite Panamanian pointing out where my cleaning efforts were sub-standard. I brought the flagpole in yesterday since it was warm enough that it was no longer frozen into the ground. The house sitter comes by today for an orientation and I have to hit Home Depot to see if they have some brackets we need for the condo. I’m not confident in my success there but who knows. We’re at that point where we just want the planning and traveling to be over so we can relax on the beach. The past few weeks, while eminently enjoyable, have been physically taxing. I’m ready for a rest and there is no better place to achieve that than at the most beautiful beach in the world. I may be a bit biased but there is abundant evidence to prove my point. Now to just get there.

I cringed when I saw the result of the major snow storm that hit Northern Virginia a couple days ago. They now have more snow than we do which is scary. I spent over ten years living in that area and we loved the it, except for the traffic and when it snowed. As a native New Englander I was so frustrated with the local government’s response to snow storms when we lived there. It snows every year there but it seems to surprise them, every year. I’m sure most heard the news reports of thousands of cars stranded on I-95 for more than 27 hours. In this day and age that is just flat incompetence.

Final Stages

My somewhat fractured plan for our four-month deployment to Panama is weirdly coming together almost in spite of myself and some other factors. The latest road block was my Favorite Panamanian getting sick again, once again, thanks to our intrepid granddaughters in New Hampshire. They seem to think a parting gift is required and the only thing they have that is truly their own to present to us with is their latest malady. This time it was a stomach cold that felled my wife in her tracks yesterday. We had the at home Covid test which confirmed she wasn’t facing that, which is everyone’s first fear nowadays whenever they feel under the weather.

Plants Relocated
This meant the pre-deployment cleaning tasks she had lined up, fell to me. In my own. In my less than humble opinion, I think I did a great job. I did, however, use the wrong cloth for the kitchen cabinet cleaning which my wife was only too happy to point out before she thanked me. The big task was the migration of all the house plants from their various locations to a central one in the dining room. The hose sitter will have it much easier than I did in prior years when, during my wife’s absence, I had to seek out and find each of the far-flung plants for watering. Woe be unto me if one of them died in her absence.

The Family Typhoid Mary

She Looks So Innocent
One of the biggest challenges I had to face involved the state DMV. I know. Scary. Since I bought the Highlander in February a couple years ago, the registration renewal and annual inspection falls in that month. Since I plan on longing on a Panamanian beach during that month I had a conundrum to face. In a startling development that I would have thought could have easily served as the basis on a highly unbelievable science fiction movie, the DMV was easy to work with. I renewed the car registration online and received it three days later. I knocked out the inspection this morning which will move it January each year. The final hurdle was my wife’s driver’s license which expires in February, her birth month. Once again, I went online and seven days later, she has a new license, where they used her on file, five years younger photo. The feared trip to the DMV and waiting the renewal license to show up was completely unnecessary. I’m think I now operate in some parallel universe where the DMV is easy to work with. I will admit to a serious amount of prayer was involved when the mailman showed up each day.

Success!!!
To celebrate approaching the finish line of pre-deployment plans, I decided to test drive my new professional sized popcorn maker. Alright, the real reason was the needed special popcorn arrived, courtesy of Amazon, yesterday. The first lesson I learned, very quickly I might add, as I rushed to close the front glass door, was to insure I pull the top down to cover the pot so popcorn isn’t spewed all over the room. An important lesson to be sure. The second load went much better and I felt almost competent. I will have to clear the air in the Man Cave after each use but a small price to pay form movie theater quality popcorn.

FBR Modeling one of her Christmas Gifts This Morning
This morning dawned much better, despite an intermittent ice storm. My Favorite Panamanian is back on her feet and says she feels great. So only a 24-hour bug to vanquish, which is a definite improvement over the head cold BR3 bequeathed to me during a prior visit.

Babysitting Blitz

First of all, my heartfelt thanks for the friends that reached out to congratulate me on retirement. It was unexpected but warmly received. My Favorite Panamanian are I are back from a quick trip up to New Hampshire to provide babysitting service for the BRS and BR3. It’s one of those situations where we would offer to pay the parents for the opportunity but so far they haven’t charged us. One of the gifts my Favorite Son and the ABFA shared with each other was a morning long spa session which the kids were pointedly not invited to. Therein lies the requirement for grandparent insertion into the situation. We journeyed up Saturday afternoon after a day long effort to overcome New Years’ Eve exertions (Okay, that was mostly me).

BR3 Showing Grandpa her Selfie Game
The grandkids were delighted to see us again, so soon after the memorable Christmas events. I don’t think they understood our need to spend time with them since it will be April before we can hug them again. The BRS wanted to demonstrate her newest acquisition, a mobile microphone set. I laughed when I saw it, as noise making gifts are an inside joke within the family starting when Great Aunt gifted a play pistol to my son back in the day which sounded just like a police siren. Of course, he made full use of it on the drive back to Northern Virginia, causing minor heart attacks in the driver seat thinking I was being pulled over (not that I don’t stringently obey speed limits). The funniest thing about the BRS sound system was it came from her parents. I laughed as I told my son that they had done it to themselves. He pointedly gestured towards the ABFA.

Abuela Hugs
The grandkids were great for us Sunday morning. BR3 had a midnight regurgitation event but that probably had more to do with the liquid soap she drank than any malady. She’s developed a very cute selfie behavior, demonstrated by the accompanying photos. They both continued their energy vampiric ways as they seemed to get busier as their grandparents’ vigor were sapped. We had a great time with them although the morning did seem to pass slowly as we awaited the parental return. They eventually did, greatly refreshed from their spa treatments. We then settled in to watch a very enjoyable Patriots’ game together as the Pats re-emerged from a recent funk with an absolute shellacking of a terrible Jacksonville team. It was tough to depart and we performed our traditional twice around the cul de sac with horn blaring that the grandkids seem to enjoy as they wave from the front door. I think my son‘s neighbors hate us.

New Year Unemployed

For the first time since I was fifteen years old, I find myself waking up with neither a job or school to worry about. My last employed day was uneventful but I took a small measure of satisfaction at 5PM when I deleted my work email address and removed all the employment related websites. There was a real feeling of detachment from something that has dominated my life for over a half century. It was a very good feeling which only confirmed my decision to finally retire. I am ready for whatever comes next.

Wife and I Last Night
What immediately came next was assisting my Favorite Panamanian with some house cleaning. One of the customs she grew up with was the cleanliness of your home on New Year’s Day is a harbinger for what it will be for the rest of the year. That meant some heavy-duty cleaning to meet my wife’s lofty standards. The only problem was her back was still bothering her which mean I was required to do a lot more than I thought was necessary. The helping her part was completely necessary so let’s just say my spotlessness standards aren’t as high as hers and leave it at that. The biggest challenge was de-decorating the Christmas tree and lugging all the ornaments back to the basement. The tree was also ready to retire and left an inch thick carpet of needles on the floor. My final act was the dismemberment and flattening of the cursed deer figurines who had also met their retirement age. They’ll now all fit in one garbage bag. There was a little bit of satisfaction seeping into my efforts as I remembered all the cold nights I spent setting them back up after they blew down despite an elaborate set of poles and wires to keep them upright. So, satisfying.

Evidence a Former Christmas Tree Passed this Way

Three Flattened Deer
We were spending New Year’s Eve at the Neighborhood Mafiosos and other members of the Panamanian Mafia. Despite being only 100 meters from the party location, my Favorite Panamanian said we had to drive because she didn’t think her back would allow her to walk that far. I explained our tardiness to our hosts being due to the heavy traffic we encountered. It was a small but very fun crowd assembled to welcome in the new year. As is wont to happen when Panamanians gather, dancing soon broke out but for the first time in our married life my Favorite Panamanian did not lead the charge. Her back would not allow it and I could tell this was the unkindest cut of all for the injury because she revels in dancing.

The Dancing Starts

My Wife Agonizing about Not Joining in

With my Dancing Buddies
She did manage a couple really slow dances with me providing back support to insure no untoward movements. The biggest surprise of the night was I ended up spending a lot more time on the dance floor with our hostess and her daughter. It was the most I’ve danced with someone other than my wife since we first met. I’m thinking I was in a party mood because of the whole email account deletion. At any rate, we laughed, danced, and imbibed into the last vestiges of 2021. The year will go out with a tarnished reputation because of the Covid resurgence but I still found the year eminently more worthy of praise than its benighted predecessor, the evil 2020.

The Mafia Greets the New Year
Last night was a perfect example of that as a group of vaccinated friends were able to gather and recapture some of the good vibes of a New Year’s Eve party that were denied us last year. There isn’t a fair way to properly assess the importance of human contact, especially with good friends but last night offered a glimpse into what had been missing for so long. Hanging with excellent people and partying into the early morning hours is truly medicinal for the soul. Of source, it doesn’t do wonders for the head that has to greet the next day but it is a price worth paying because of those excellent people. They made all the difference.
