Never Forget 2018 edition

Birthday Girl After Drive From Hell
I find it hard to believe that it's been seventeen years since the 9/11 attacks. That's more time than between World War 2 and when I was born. I was at the Pentagon that beautiful September morning that turned so ugly. I publish the same words here(see below) each year so we don't forget there are still wolves out there and we can never become so complacent to think otherwise even with the very distracting domestic situation we're living under these days.
My View for 3+ Hours Yesterday
I got a first-hand look at what has become the standard Panamanian protest technique yesterday on my trip back to David from Las Lajas. The Panamanian teacher's union is upset about lack of government support in getting them to some of the most remote areas of Panama where they're required to teach. Yesterday they closed down the Inter-American Highway for three+ hours. I know this because I was sitting in the backup for all of that time. There are no alternate routes. I felt bad because it was my mother in law's birthday as we sat there with nothing to do but wait. After that very long wait when traffic finally did get moving a number of drivers had left their cars so it was like a slalom course as the thousands of cars got moving again – right into the most ferocious thunder storm I've ever seen in Panama and that is quite a statement in itself. During the time cars started inching forward the truck directly in front of me must have tapped the small car in front of him. The truck driver got out to look at the damage and the small car then purposely backed into the truck with a lot of force at least three times doing a lot more damage to himself than the truck. It was a good indication of the level of frustration involved.
Finally Started Moving

Right into looming Storm

Dinner with my Favorite Panamanian at El Fogon Helped
Our normal one hour trip from the condo turned into a five hour odyssey which had me in a less than stellar mood and looking of a couple of teachers to punch. A quick trip for dinner at El Fogon and then returning to find the house full of my wife's family assembled to extend birthday wishes helped a lot to assuage the frustration of the drive. Two hours of consistent laughter will do that for you.

The words below are the same I publish each year on September 11 to remember that day in 2001.
I was assigned to the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. I remember a beautifully clear day where the oppressive summer Washington, DC heat was finally gone. We had recently dropped off my daughter for her freshman year at Boston University, my son was a junior in high school, and my wife worked at an adult day care facility in Northern Virginia. I was actually in a satellite office in Crystal City while our Pentagon offices were refurbished. My morning routine was to head out for a run along the Potomac River where there was a nice running trail. I ran around the Pentagon and glanced over at the helipad where I had taken several trips out of and then wound my way down to the river. I had just reached the river, on the opposite side of the Pentagon from the helipad, and turned south when I heard a very loud bang. There was always a lot of construction going on in nearby Crystal City so I initially thought that someone had used a little too much explosive for a new roadway.
Red X is Where the Plane Went in, Blue Line is my Running Route that Day
Yellow X is Where I was When the Plane Hit
As I continued my run I heard police sirens blooming from every direction. I reached a gap in the trees and could see a column of smoke rising from the Pentagon. I had just about reached the point where the running trail nears National Airport and I was greeted by a truly surreal sight. The airport, in reaction to the earlier attacks in New York City, was being emptied. People, with their luggage in tow, were wandering down the running trail with no real sense of where they were going, only that they had been ordered to leave the terminal. I gave directions to the nearest hotel to some and then headed back to my office, by now the sirens were almost deafening and traffic had come to a complete stop in both directions on the nearby George Washington Parkway. When I reached my office I learned the true scope of the disaster and watched the towers fall on a TV someone had set up in their cubicle. There were a series of follow up explosions as transformers blew up in reaction to the Pentagon disaster. A couple guys and I made our way over to the Pentagon to see if we could help with any evacuation but the area was already cordoned off. We helped the rapidly growing casualty collection in the south parking lot; there were a lot of dazed civilian workers. The military, even those wounded were trying to help out; we all realized we had just gone to war. Eventually we were ushered away as more of the professional emergency workers showed up. I returned to my office and decided it would be a good idea to let my family know I was alive. I called my wife who had heard and was just about to go into full blown panic mode. I called Boston University because I didn’t have my daughter’s dorm room number with me and when I explained where I was calling from the operator connected me directly, even though that wasn’t usually allowed. I spoke with my daughter’s roommate who promised to find my daughter and let her know. A similar call to my son’s high school followed by a call to my mother’s house. I had to leave a message there since she out shopping and she later told me that was the best phone message she ever received because she had convinced herself I had been killed after hearing the news on the car radio.
All buses, my normal way home, were shut down at the Pentagon. Washington DC was shutting down and everybody was released from work at the same time. I went to the Metro station and waited while five different trains, packed to the gills, went by until I was able to squeeze into one. I rode it as far as I could and then walked up to a nearby mall where I could wait for my wife to come pick me up. I sat in a bar and watched the day’s events unfold on TV. One of the other patrons claimed to have been driving on I-395 and saw the plane plow into the Pentagon. He said he would never forget seeing the airline lettering so clear and so close. The plane went right into the area near the helipad, where I had run ten minutes before. After an hour the entire mall closed and I had to go wait outside a bookstore, also closed, for about two hours before my wife was able to get me. One of the most memorable and cherished things from that horrible day were the phone calls we received all that night as friends and family from around the world, knowing I was assigned to the Pentagon, called to insure I was okay.
My wife was a little shocked the next day when I told her I was going back to work but I needed to, I was so angry. It didn’t help when I arrived at the Pentagon, smoke still rising with bodies still unrecovered, that I was greeted by a group of protestors reveling in the destruction. It took a lot of self-restraint not to kick some serious ass at that point. I was so glad Clinton was out of office because I knew he would have been incapable of making the tough decisions required by this act. He would have thrown a few cruise missiles and called it a day.
We as a nation learned that day that there are some people who cannot be reasoned with and needed to die; that was the only way to end the threat and that you couldn’t do it from a distance. I also remembered the way the country came together for a short time and I felt glad my kids were around to see it; to see what a united America was like. This eroded over time as the politicians felt safe enough to stop cooperating again, but it did happen. It was another object lesson for evil as well, don’t wake up the sleeping giant, when you do, be prepared to experience unprecedented wrath. These were my memories of the day when everything changed, but maybe not enough.

Inevitability of Surf and Dragonfly Clouds

What I'm Seeing Right Now
I’ve spent the last few days here at the beach condo with the view above as my almost constant sight. There really is something soothing about the sound and the certain inevitability of the oncoming surf. The picture above is my view right now as I write this and there’s nothing not to recommend it. I’ve gotten into a routine where I don my swim shirt (having had enough of dermatologists excavating on me) and head out for some boogie boarding. I walked out today and looked either way on the pristine beach. I could see at least a mile in each direction and I had the entire expanse completely to myself, well, me and the pelicans. The surf was a lot more biddable today and I managed several rides all the way into ankle depth water.
Yesterday there were several other families in the condo complex for the weekend with a number of small children charging around, completely soaking the elevator floor. I loved it though and more because it made me think of the future when my kids and the FBR/BRS come to visit. I spend a lot of time thinking about those times and wishing they would get here sooner. I sat in the pool this morning after jousting with the waves and noticed a veritable swarm of dragonflies swooping through the area. I’ve seen them for each day I’ve been here and it’s something I hadn’t seen in my other visits. Since it’s an insect and we’re in Panama of course they’re a lot bigger than the stateside version. I’m comforted to think how many mosquitoes each of them had to eat to get that big. The swarm was in the hunt mode seeking out all the low lying areas which is where their food source lingers in the heat of the day.
Old Man Brady - Back to Work
Yesterday my Favorite Panamanian had me charging around Las Lajas since she was under the weather. She stayed in bed but she has a favorite seaside restaurant down the beach where she ordered some take out. I was the take out part of the equation. It’s about a three mile drive down the pot holed road to this place and my wife assured me they had received the order and would be waiting on me. Of course, this is Panama so things move at a little slower pace. I arrived and the young girl looked at me cross eyed when I asked about the take out order. Luckily a few minutes later her mother showed up, remembered me from an earlier visit and said she would get the order. Ten minutes later she came back out and said they had just finished cleaning the fish and would have the meals ready “soon”. Like I said – Panama. This did give me time to commune with their collection of parrots and I like to think I bonded with a couple of them over the ensuing fifteen minute wait.
Walk Off Win!
I was planning on sneaking over to the Show Pony Hotel to hopefully catch some NFL action but when I drove past on my way back with two fragrant fish dinners permeating the car the bar was unexpectedly packed. I therefore spent the day back home, not a bad situation, at all. Both the Patriots and the Red Sox were playing good Houston teams yesterday and I was pleased to eventually learn that they both won as Houston went 0 for Boston. That was an excellent way to end the day. Strangely I didn’t feel too put out to have missed watching either game, the view of the beach with all its inevitability certainly helped. We’ll leave shortly for David and the next round with the paper pushers. Hopefully we can knock that out quickly enough to get me back here for a few more days.

Confirmation

View from our Balcony

Every now and then a shadow of a doubt will creep into my head about whether I was crazy to embark on the retirement plan of the winter months down here in Panama. Then I get to spend a few days down here at our condo and all those doubts are sucked away in the warm surf of Las Lajas. The photo above shows my view each morning. As I look out this morning there’s a thunderstorm out in the bay which stayed off shore but provided a vibrant rainbow for about ten minutes.
First Friday
We came down on Friday and spent a couple hours on clean up detail as a beachfront condo is a little like a boat in the requisite upkeep. Combine that with the height of Panamanian rainy season and there was scrubbing to do after the condo sat vacant for a couple months. It was nothing a couple of Atlas beers on the balcony couldn’t solve after the work was completed. I felt it important to insure the sanctity of honoring the First Friday of the week was maintained.
I followed my usual routine here on Saturday morning of an early morning body surfing session followed by a few laps in the pool. Panamanians are not the earliest risers in the world so I had the beach and the pool completely to myself. My Favorite Panamanian has always been concerned that my body surfing would get me into trouble and warns me about the rainy season surf being too dangerous. I always nod my head and then directly head for a confrontation with said waves. Yesterday I met my match as for the first time as I realized these waves were bigger (15-20’) and more powerful than I had ever experienced before. I guess the fact I could feel their impact on the third floor should have clued me in. There were also massive currents between sets that knocked me over a few times. At any rate after a couple wild rides that were more survival mode than enjoyable I admitted I was fighting above my weight and retired to the pool. The wife took the news that I finally admitted she was right with the expected equanimity. I’ll anxiously await the calmer waters of the dry season.

Put this New Puzzle Together All by Herself
The power went out for a few hours yesterday as they claimed to be working on the grid but that worked out okay because my mother in law forgot some important medication so we journeyed back to David to pick that up before returning to the beach. We also picked up seven batteries because Friday night was spent listening to the constant chirping of the smoke detectors that required new batteries – another beach front living lesson learned – note to self – bring plenty of batteries next time. We just found an eighth one as well. Who puts a smoke detector in a storage closet!?

Re-Immersed

Last Night's Celebratory Wings and Beer
My Favorite Panamanian and I were back doing battle with the Panamanian bureaucracy yesterday as we nailed down the final two pieces of paperwork I’m going to need for next week’s meeting with the immigration ministry. A brief description of our day will give you an insight into what this process involves. We first had to produce an electric bill from our Panamanian residence. The ones from our condo don’t count since the original bill is split up by the homeowners association to each resident. Since the only other option is in the name of my mother in law we had to get two non-family members to sign an official statement, duly notarized, that my wife and I are resident with her while in Panama. We drafted my mother in law’s maid and a childhood friend of my wife for the honors.

The next stop had a government bureaucrat who wouldn’t accept the electric bill as evidence since it was for July and not August. We then had to go to the electric company for a statement that the August bills wouldn’t come out for another couple weeks. This bureaucrat kept asking our lawyer how much my retirement pay was and my lawyer told her it was none of her business because those taxes were paid in the US. She finally told her that my pension was $12K a year because she thought she was looking for a bribe and this would put her off.
Exploring
Our final event was obtaining what is called a paz y salvo but in an attempt to move into the 21st century this is only available on line now. My wife, our lawyer and I sat around my mother in law’s dining room table as I battled the log in system and an extremely balky Wi-Fi signal. We were on the verge of giving up when I figured out a missing step. I think I was channeling my two kids’ consciousness as they have laboriously tutored me over the years on the electro-magnetic spectrum. We finally made it to the document we needed but it wouldn’t allow me to save it, only print but, of course, we had no printer. Another lesson from my daughter clicked in that I could print to file and saved the document that way. I then sent it to the lawyer’s office so she could print it out. I can only imagine what some of the older Panamanians, without access to the internet, would have to go through to get this paperwork.
Deep Dinner Conversations with Family Friend
In way of celebration I took the family out for wings and beers last night which was exactly what the doctor ordered. Sustained laughter with family is the absolute best way to mitigate the pain of dealing with entrenched bureaucrats. Since our work prior to next week’s meeting is done we’re headed for our beach condo for the weekend. My prediction – serial Atlas consumption.
Fun with Daddy

Since telenovelas are not my calling I’ve spent a lot of my down time here in the evenings pursuing my predecessors on Ancestry.com. It really is addictive. I now have over 3700 people on my family tree. A couple of the latest additions were one of the Salem ladies accused of witchcraft (but not one that was executed) and a British knight called Bloody John. He was one of Queen Mary’s most ardent prosecutors of protestants and he was rumored to be a vampire in his home village. We’re also descended from the second mate on the Mayflower who was also the navigator. I’m not sure this is something to crow about though because I think the Mayflower was supposed to land in Virginia, not Massachusetts. This is pretty cool stuff.

Funereal

The BRS Photos my Son Sent Helped with Morale

The pace of paperwork has slowed the past couple days as my wife has been drawn into a couple funerals that coincided with our arrival in Panama. The family wags automatically accused our arrival as the initiating cause for the respective demises, of course. The first was a parent of a very close friend from their neighborhood. I was struck by the similarities with the funeral of my Cantankerous Friend’s father earlier this year. The man was an important part of the lives of the tightknit group of neighborhood children that included my wife’s family. Yesterday the funeral was for a member of the Worcester Chapter of the Panamanian Mafia’s mom who passed away Sunday.
That funeral was in the nearby town of Bocaron and since this required navigation I was pressganged into driving. It always amazes me that a completely uncoordinated event happens routinely when my wife is involved and somehow bears fruit. She had only a vague idea of where the other person we were picking up lived and after three back and forth trips over the same road and two stops for questions of the locals we found the lady’s house and were on our way to the funeral since the lady we picked up was the only one who knew where that was (you can catch my drift) and were there at the appointed time.
The small church we walked into was crowded with people and we were able to greet the friend who’d flown in the night before from Worcester. We’d also stopped by the airport when she came in to express our sympathies. The church’s air conditioning was not up to the challenge of the assembled crowd. This was an Adventist church so my wife warned me there would be a lot of singing. I was at peace as long as I wasn’t expected to participate in the singing which would have added another whole level to the Ugly American syndrome. The songs started at 930am. By 1015 I asked my wife if there was going to be an actual ceremony or just more sweat soaked songs. She opined that they were waiting for the pastor to show up. By 1045 with no sign of the pastor and no letup in the songs we had to leave to make a previously arranged appointment at the bank back in David. Our friend understood and bid us safe travels.
My Wife and a Favorite Cousin from an Earlier Social Stop
Later in the day we had a very entertaining gathering on my mother in law’s front porch. The son from the first funeral stopped by to say goodbye to my wife and mother in law but they insisted we sit down for a talk. I thoroughly enjoyed the next few hours as I was regaled with stories from my wife’s childhood that are very rare. This guy was a close friend of my brother in law and he and his wife showed up shortly after we sat down. The corner grocery supplied the needed beer and the stories and laughter flowed unabated. I think this is something we’ve lost as electronics are taking over our lives. The need to reach out electronically to connect robs time from actually sitting down, in person, with neighbors and friends to have face to face conversations. I hope at some point we’ll all realize what we’re sacrificing by keeping our faces glued to social media instead of actually being social with live people.

Tropical Landfall

Missing this Little Scamp - A Lot
I can confirm the stories you’ve heard about the rainy season in the tropics are not exaggerated. Things are pretty soggy down here right now and everything is a vibrant green. It also ratifies my long held opinion that I should only visit Panama during the dry season. Unfortunately requirements for my residency status mandated I come here for another few rounds with the Panamanian bureaucracy. If nothing else I will get some well-earned rest that my body (and spirit) has been demanding for a few weeks now.
But Grandparents are no Substitute mom and dad
Keene Friend, because he is just about the finest human being walking the earth gave us a ride to the airport so I won’t suck down three weeks of airport parking fees. Another lesson learned, Sunday in the middle of a holiday weekend is an excellent time to fly. First time we walked right up to the security check – no line at all. We escorted my mother in law after her month long stay with us. We chose seats in the back of the airplane near the bathrooms to accommodate her needs. My wife and I looked around as we flew and learned we were immersed in a sub-culture of airline travelers as we were by the far the youngest people within five rows of us. So this is what the future holds I guess.
And the Inevitable Cookie Break
The tumult of traveling also kept our minds off missing the company of the FBR although part of the need for rest comes from trying to keep up with her for the past week. By five o’clock we were in David and behind the wheel of our rental car. Shortly thereafter we assembled the available family members for what has become a tradition for our first night returning to Panama – dinner at El Fogon! The waiter greeted me like a long lost friend (the power of generous tipping) and I was soon swirling in the nearly unending laughter that occurs whenever my wife’s family assembles.
Although an Angry Sleeper When She left our House

Solved when She's Back with Neighborhood Friends
I spent all of Labor Day (not a holiday here) going head to head with the bureaucrats and like to think I came out ahead on points. We did learn they screwed up the sale of our land by still having me listed as part owner. Our lawyer/fixer indicated it would probably be a bad move to try and sell it again. We accomplished all of our other goals for the day which included repeated crisscrossing of central David. This in no way diminished my opinion that Panama has some of the most beautiful women in the world. Of course I’m lucky enough to be married to one of the aforementioned and she was liberal with the elbows when my assessments were noticed.
My Nemesis - The Backyard Grapefruit Tree
All we have left to do is a Thursday appointment and then waiting for the follow on in depth appointment next Monday at the immigration office. I don’t know how anyone could do this without the help of a lawyer like we have. The process is truly labyrinthine and makes no sense to this gringo. There are a multitude of well disguised government offices spread throughout the city and each jealously guards the power of their stamps which are the grease that causes Panamanian paperwork to flow.
This Girl
All this means we’re going to be able to sneak down to our beach condo for at least a few days between bouts. I actually slept in until 7am this morning and the grapefruits aren’t ripe yet so no daily bombardment from the grapefruit tree hanging over our bedroom. The rogue flock of parakeets that tormented my last visit have yet to set up their break of dawn serenade directly over our bedroom yet so the much needed rest is sublime.

Reunification

Together Again

One of the sweetest moments, which is saying a lot considering the saccharine soaked experiences with the FBR, happened on Deckzilla last night. We were conducing First Friday operations on Deckzilla when the FBR’s parents walked around the corner and surprised her. While she knew they were coming she had spent the last couple hours playing to the assembled crowd so she was taken by surprise. It took her a moment to process what she was seeing before she launched herself at her parents for what she called a family together hug.
I could tell how much my daughter and Wingman had missed the FBR and was so glad they were able to sneak out of New Jersey in time to join us out on Deckzilla. We had been thwarted on several occasions to have one of our trademark Deckzilla parties this summer but it always rained. There weren’t any Rhode Islanders this time out which seemed to do the trick. After an oppressive week of heat and humidity we had a perfect new England summer night for the festivities. My work colleagues left after a while to be replaced by the Worcester Chapter of the Panamanian mafia and we partied into the night as this was my mother in law’s last Friday in country before returning to Panama tomorrow.
A Deckzilla First Friday

Any peak is inevitably followed by a valley and that was this morning when I had to say goodbye to the entire New Jersey contingent as the FBR returned home after her week long stay with us. I immediately noticed how preternaturally quiet the house became after her departure. I’m going to miss her more than I can adequately explain. Luckily I have a three week tour back to Panama myself to distract. I wish it was for another reason other than dealing with the residency application bureaucrats but that’s my fate.

Since this is September now, hard to credit that, this marks the start of my eighth year writing Frail Deeds. It’s certainly evolved and for the past few years I’ve spent a lot of time chronicling the early lives of my two granddaughters, hoping they’ll read it at some point in the future when I’m probably just a hopefully cherished memory. I wanted them to know both me and my wife from this time, a time they won’t remember. I guess I’ll keep going in the hopes a grandson appears at some point to carry on the family name (no pressure son).

I’ve fallen completely under thrall to the Ancestry.com site as I continue to add branches to my family tree. I now have 3078 ancestors identified to the point it’s becoming frustrating that there are so many. As I follow each line back I become upset when the ancestor turns out to be of the nobility because there’s always more records and hence more names to add with them. Still it’s a hell of a lot of fun when leavened with my imagination of the lives these great-grandparents forged. I’m not sure how often I’ll get to blog from Panama but I may need to in order to deal with the ingrained frustration.
