Ignored But Upright

The Social Queen of Glendale
For the very first time in a long while the First Blog Reader basically ignored me last night during our FaceTime call. I called Buddy to help because she always wants to see the “Woof” but even the Wonder Pooch failed to distract her. She was in full entertainment mode because a couple of friends were visiting her Mom and Wingman. She has taken on the job of being the center of social interaction for whatever is occurring in her home and obviously felt she could talk to me anytime and opportunity to engage with real people was vastly more important. My daughter was apologetic but I take it is a good sign of a confident young lady developing. Buddy was the only one truly inconvenienced because I’d called him away from his cat vigil. He spotted a feline intruder striding through “his” back yard yesterday and has yet to abandon hope of engaging the target.
In Full Entertainment Mode
My Favorite Panamanian called late last night to catch me up on her adventures. She’s squiring the Maine Musquetera around her home province of Chiriquí. Earlier in the week during the annual Day of the Dead they trekked to visit the gravesite of my father in law. They also made the required trip to Boquete the beautiful town in the mountains where we rented a house for week this past February. Yesterday they were supposed to go to Volcan but instead snuck away to my favorite beach in the world – Las Lajas. Rumor has it that someone very close to me is building a beachfront condo at that same beach. She was able to check on the progress. Unfortunately she couldn’t get too close because they were laying the down the parking lot.

They had a great day at the beach although they did encounter some sort of oceanic creature while swimming. My sister in law felt something brush against her leg and while she was still in mid-eeek my wife stepped on what she thinks was a stingray. I started laughing uncontrollably at this point. When she asked what I thought was so funny I told her it was because I’d missed the sight of her running, while screaming, on top of the water all the way to shore. I got one of her stern looks but she did not deny the charge.

Yesterday was also Independence Day in Panama so the beach was uncharacteristically crowded which you can see from the pictures. This is what constitutes crowded. They dodged the rainy season’s downpours all day at the beach but we treated to a deluge for the tip back. They had a somber entry as they neared David as they ran into the results of head-on collision that had occurred scant minutes before they passed.

View out my Window at Head of Valley

Towards Vernon Hill
I’m so ready for Friday this week. The fall colors are truly spectacular and the new office has great views of the foliage. One window looks out on the head of the Blackstone Valley while the other has a great view of Vernon Hill. I just wish I get to the point, eventually, that I have time to enjoy the view. I miss the excellent boss.

Memory Day

That California Lady
One of the many benefits of my nightly FaceTime calls with a certain young lady out in California is to resurrect memories of her mother at the same age. It’s astonishing, alright maybe not so much since they are mother and daughter, how closely they resemble each other. Last night’s call sent me looking for pictures that captured some of those moments. I love going into the old photo albums, despite the depredations the “kids” made over the years to create photo collages for school projects.
Her Mother, My Daughter at Similar Age
I was in the middle of this search when I ran into some of the rare photos of my mother. I say rare because she always and usually very sternly refused to have her picture taken; even at a young age when she was renowned for her beauty. Today just happens to be her birthday so my thoughts were bound to wander in that direction anyways.
Mom
My mother was a complicated and at the end very damaged woman. She set out on her own at the age of fifteen and through hard work and searing intelligence obtained her nursing degree. She left to escape two abusive brothers and often sought the refuge of the town library, that love of reading was passed on to her children. Early indications are that her great granddaughter will follow that trend as well. Mom actually left $1000 to that library in her will even though she hadn’t been back in over a half century.

Younger Version of Great Aunt Holding Her, Mom in Background

Growing up I was very proud of my mother. She was fun to be around despite some very pointed ideas on discipline. She even tossed the Cantankerous Friend into a snow bank when they were passing on the street one day and he wasn’t going to say hi to her. Two events conspired to eradicate that thoughtful woman of my youth. The first was her divorce. She hated to fail at anything and took the events leading up to the split extremely hard. I think back to those days and am horrified at the position she placed her children in. I know my two younger sisters paid an even harder more enduring price.
The second event was infinitely more invasive and completely altered my mother’s personality. That was the death by suicide of one of my younger sisters. Despite that sister’s lengthy record of mental health problems, up to and including hospitalization, my mother always blamed herself in some way for the death, which was manifestly unfair but again, I know this is every parent’s worst nightmare. We’re supposed to outlive our children.

Mom and my Daughter
It didn’t happen immediately but over the years she retreated more and more into herself, became insular and almost mean spirited. She easily took offense and would go out of her way to freeze out anyone she thought had wronged her. My daughter was one of the few people who could draw her out of the dark places her psyche took her. From the very first moment of meeting they were incredibly close and it offered a glimpse for the rest of us of that remembered mother of our youth. I can just imagine how far over the moon she would have been to meet the First Blog Reader. In her last few weeks as she was in recovery from open heart surgery she miraculously returned to that earlier version of herself. I’ve often thought the pain she felt due to a variety of maladies contributed to her inner retreat. I like to think she’s upstairs looking down on us now and showering us with the love she held back now that she’s free of earthly pain. Happy Birthday Mom.

Amazing One’s Self

Scared Face
It’s not easy to surprise yourself especially if you’re not gifted with an array of talent in certain areas. That certainly applies to my expertise in the area of today’s tech world. That’s what made last week’s loss of my IPad so painful. It is therefore with no small amount of pride that I can report that I not only bought a new IPad (the easy part) but I formatted it completely and then restored all my original settings from my old IPad’s last session with the ICloud. I know millennials will read this and say this is child’s play. Of course it is but then you need to consider that today’s children have technical expertise that dwarfs that of a middle aged old fart such as myself.
I'm Scared of Peas as Well
I was so surprised that I felt a little giddy when reporting my success to sensei #1 – the Cali-Daughter. She and Wingman have labored along and hard to drag me into 21st Century technology and I felt like a recalcitrant student who finally aced a test. I tried to reach out to the Favorite Son, my other tutor, but he was unavailable. It was tough being alone because I had no one to high five. I know, it’s a small victory, but considered in context, a big win.

I went to see Inferno on dateless date night. I love Tom Hanks in everything he’s ever done (yes even Bonfire of the Vanities) but my least favorite amongst his many excellent roles was the Robert Langdon of Da Vinci Code fame. As Mr. Hanks is wont to do, he turned that opinion on its head returning as Langdon in this very well done thriller. He also ditched the lame haircut. Langdon wakes up in Florence with amnesia and the half remembered clues to humanity’s salvation from a devastatingly apocalyptic virus. There’s a well-conceived twist near the end. The picture really takes off when Irrfan Khan (elder Pi himself) shows up. It’s not often Hanks has scenes stolen from him but Khan does it repeatedly. I know this movie is receiving scant praise but I liked it. The seemingly nonsensical plot turns of the first half are neatly woven into the terrifying conclusion.

Lost Cords and Milestone

Making a Point With her Quarry
I experienced something of a tsunami of properly bedecked Halloweeners last night which surprised me. Last year, when we lived directly across the street, we ended up with a lot of excess candy due to lack of trick or treaters. This is, of course, a scenario that bodes ill will towards my determination to fight the midriff battles of middle age, excess candy quickly becomes a target of choice. With that in mind, in preparation for last night, I bought four large bags of candy of the type I would not eat under any circumstances but would still be considered socially acceptable. That’s a fairly narrow band but I had two overflowing bowls of Kit Kats and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups which I thought would be more than enough. Of course, it was not as the onslaught of Hogwart’s students, Batmans, and fairy princesses quickly eroded the supply.
Heading out on Important Trip
I’ll buy more next year and we’ll have less people come. I’m beginning to suspect some sort of bizarre conspiracy at work. I was Facetiming with my wife during the latter stages of the human wave attack at the front door as she wanted to see some of the costumes. She reported the loss of yet another phone charging cord at her Bocas Del Toro hotel. This has become something of a standard operating procedure any time she checks into a hotel and I’m not around for a final walk though. Of course I couldn’t comment negatively about her loss since I’d been stupid enough to lose my IPad last week.
Her Engineer Uncle Will be Happy with this Activity
I also checked in with the California contingent as my daughter was enjoying her last calm Halloween for at least the next dozen years. The First Blog Reader wasn’t ready for trick or treating yet but did seem mildly amused as we played our head tilting contest with each other. Yet another reason I can’t wait for Christmas!

Finally I reached a milestone with Frail Deeds. I reached 100,000 page views since I started my nonsensical ravings here. I know that isn’t that much in the realm of blogging where some sites put up that kind of number in a couple hours and not four years. So if you’re reading this (and I assume you are) I’ve passed the 100K mark.
