The Face I will Miss |
Now that’s something I’m usually not
saying. I have a well-honed appreciation for Fridays and regularly worship them
at the altar of First Friday. Today is different however as it will see the
First Blog Reader depart for home with Wingman. The past week is testament to
how much fun being a grandparent can be. It helps when the object of that
affection is utterly charming as my granddaughter is.
Splashing with Daddy |
Wingman showed up yesterday afternoon
and instead of a huge hug his daughter first gave him a tour of all the new toys
she’d acquired during her stay with us. He was then summoned into the pool for
extensive splashing. I think this was her way of conveying what she felt was
requisite to support her in the style she has become accustomed to over the past
week. It’s kind of our job as grandparents.
Mid-Day Games with her Great-Grandmother |
I’m going to miss her terribly; the
shy first smiles in the morning, her constant subpoenaing of me whenever she
knows I’m around, and the mischievous delight she takes in splashing anyone who
came within range. I know it’s way, way too early to tell but I think this
young lady is going to be something very special, of course in my view she
already is. Wingman and formerly Cali-Daughter have done a special job in her
first nineteen months. Heart is breaking a little bit this morning, hoping I
can break away from a couple meetings to catch them before they leave for the
drive home. I’m taking a weekend drive down to Washington, D.C. to show my wife’s
uncle around so that at least will help distract me as long as I can avoid the urge
to stop in New Jersey.
