Recovering

Back to Charging Around

Good news on both granddaughters’ health. The BRS was in full stomping mode last night as I caught up with her and her parents. She even blessed me with one of her trademark Viking bellows while we talked. Her dad, my son, had a momentous week as he started a new job. He was headhunted by another construction firm and his first day was on Tuesday. The work will be closer to home and offer a vast improvement in his quality of life as well as a nice bump in pay. He was understandably nervous about this new chapter but he walked into the place to find a welcoming sign and he’s off to a flying start with them.
Welcoming Sign
The FBR was also noticeably better last night but she had managed to donate her severe cold to her mother, my daughter. My Favorite Panamanian and I are of another opinion though. We think our daughter is allergic to flying. Dating back to her earliest days she was always sick whenever we had to take her on an airplane. She’s boarding a plane this morning to fly to Texas to support a friend. Just sayin.
I spent some time yesterday watching the Twitterer in Chief’s former lawyer raking him over the coals during testimony to congress. He claims President Trump is a fraud and a charlatan. Here I thought his testimony would reveal something we didn’t already know, no news here. Cohen does serve as an object lesson in hubris. It reminded me a lot of the Clinton hearings prior to his impeachment as well as the Watergate hearings. It would be nice if these esteemed congressmen and our president would get back to the business of governing the land instead of vying for their fifteen second sound bites.
Behave Grandpa!
I’ve exhausted my backlog of DVR shows and the stack of movies I had waiting for me when I returned home. Predictably my friends have stepped up to assist with the incipient loneliness the absence of my Favorite Panamanian engenders. I’ll be making a thunder run up to Keene on Saturday to hang with friends and possibly sample an adult beverage or three. Both Cantankerous Friend and Keene Friend have volunteered to supplement my failure to act my age.

Right Sided Sleeping

BRS Offering me Some Flowers
ABFA Sent these Pics to me Post Op
The latest iteration of dermatological excavation on my face was completed yesterday with yet another session on Mohs surgery. I think the Worcester dermatologists are about to select me as their poster boy. In reality the many misspent years of my youth running around the sunny climes the Army sent me to without sunblock are likely to blame. Yesterday went about as smooth as I could have hoped for. Great Aunt took a day off from work to be my designated ride home, which was not needed but was medicinal in its own right to have her at my side.
Sewed Up Cut
They got it all with the first cut which to anyone who’s been through Mohs is a best case scenario. I made the mistake of agreeing to let them show me the incision before they sewed it up. There’s something disconcerting to see a gaping hole in your face as I didn’t realize such a big cut was in the offing. I really like the surgical team who greeted me like an old friend which didn’t stop the pre- and post- op scripts which I’ve just about memorized. The doc sewing me up was one of those talkative types and kept asking me questions. This was problematic since he was, as I said, sewing up the side of my face at the same time which made speaking a bit of a challenge.
My Good Friend - The Pressure Bandage
I received the de rigueur pressure bandage which makes people think I’ve been shot in the face or have an advanced case of leprosy. This prohibited sleeping on my left side but apparently my subconscious didn’t get the memo as I sat bolt upright around 2am when I mistakenly turned over to that side. I’m supposed to keep it on for 24-48 hours but there’s no way I’m showing up for work again tomorrow with this monstrosity attached to my face. I do get to grow a beard over the next couple weeks which will be kind of cool.
Both granddaughters are on the mend for their winter colds. The BRS seems a little ahead in progress as she was back to bellowing at dinner last night. This could have been because she was having her first ever serving of mac and cheese. It’s a tribute to her breeding that she was so pleased with this delicacy. The FBR was still in snuggling mode as she unbelievably slept until almost noontime (truly unprecedented). Wingman was manning the co-snuggling position and I was able to get a couple small smiles out of the FBR. Wingman reports this morning that she seems to have turned the corner is getting back to normal.

Blown Away

The Formerly Tallest Tree Out Back

I returned home yesterday to find the top of my hill scoured. There were some record winds in Worcester yesterday and my hilltop home was not spared. Fortunately it was rubbish day also. I found one of my two recycling bins at the bottom of the hill around the corner on an adjacent street. The canvas cover for our backyard grill is missing and presumed lost along with the second recycling bin. We did better than our next door neighbor whose recently installed roof was liberally distributed around the neighborhood.
The Line of Pine Trees and the Fallen One
My biggest surprise was in our back yard. We have a series of very tall pine trees that stare ominously down upon the house from the top of our hill. I found the tallest of those trees leaning precariously on one of its neighbors having snapped at the base. Luckily it was leaning away from the house and as I watched it continued its descent when the supporting branch finally snapped. Based on this experience I think a chain saw is in the immediate future of the remaining trees.
I head back under the knife today for my latest excursion into Mohs Surgery; this time on my face. So I have that going for me. Big sister, Great Aunt, will be accompanying me. Both granddaughters reported in under the weather last night with serious coughs. This time of year combined with the free distribution of childhood germs offered by day care generated the expected results. The FBR didn’t want to relinquish her cuddling position with my daughter so she could make dinner. Eventually the FBR acquiesced to a continued conversation with her goofy grandpa which freed up her mom for the requisite time.

Oscar Overload

I’m starting to get used to a solitary viewing of the Academy Awards each year. This is necessitated by my wife’s annual absence for warmer climes but hopefully this is the last year I am so unencumbered. I hope to watch the 2020 Oscars while hearing breaking surf off to my right. I truly overestimated my capacity for snack inhalation when I was buying same for the show. This night is one of my cheat nights and I had visions of sweets going downrange that were completely outside of my capacity. I did try but admitted defeat in the face of overwhelming odds, it was a true case of conspicuous consumption.
As an incorrigible movie geek the Oscars are akin to the Super Bowl for me and I watch it from start to finish, once all the red carpet silliness finishes. My daughter shares my affliction and hosted her annual party complete with snacks themed to each of the best picture nominees. She had her biggest turnout ever and pronounced the event a complete success. The only blip on her screen was the FBR who was feeling better and decidedly unhappy about her required bedtime. I caught up with them prior to the festivities and could see the FBR was hovering in meltdown territory.
This was a hostless Oscar show which saved time but did lead to some awkward moments but overall I really liked the show. I correctly predicted 12 categories but still fell short of my daughter’s tally once again. She’s good. I liked that more popular movies are starting to get some recognition along with the usual unseen, “artsy” films that Oscar habitually kowtows to.Black Panther took in some awards along with Green Book as Best Picture which I thought was a great decision since I was afraid Roma would get it. Roma definitely falls into the artsy type I was complaining about. While the craftsmanship was obvious I thought it was a depressing movie and unworthy (an opinion not shared by my daughter). It's really weird to see one of the gross out comedy Farrelly brothers associated with an Best Picture Oscar.
There were some great Queen moments and I liked the selection of Rami Malek for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody. He gave a very nice acceptance speech but the best of the night belonged to surprise winner, Olivia Colman, who was so good in The Favourite. Everyone, including myself, expected Glen Close to win as kind of a career recognition award. Colman, was funny, sincere, and thoroughly entertaining as she won over the whole audience, including Close.
Another great moment was the duet for the eventual winning song Shallow, sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. While Cooper was obviously fighting well above his weight when matching vocal chords with Gaga it was still a very nice performance. Lady Gaga has changed my opinion of her during this awards season. I was always thought she was supremely gifted and weird to the point of psychosis. She’s changed that impression by coming out from behind all the bizarre outfits and letting her talent shine without distraction.
Finally I take this year’s show as a good sign for the academy. The increase in voting membership obviously had an effect with popular films finally getting more of their due. I thought the show moved along nicely without a host and if this continues maybe we’ll look back in the coming years to feel grateful for Kevin Hart’s homophobic phase.

Saturday Saviors

My Saviors Last Night

I’ve spent the last few days vigorously attacking my DVR backlog in a determined attempt to ward off the incipient loneliness that comes with the severely empty house. This iteration is especially acute because of all the fun experienced with the entire family as well as my in-laws down in Panama. I’ve made no progress on finding out who turned off the upstairs heat in my absence and I’ve concluded someone hasn’t been completely honest with me; probably embarrassed by forgetting to turn it back on. Since nothing is missing except for a sense of ease the end result probably just saving me some money overall for not heating that area.
Despite Being a Little Sick - Still Made it to a Book Store
4th Generation to Enjoy Medicinal Effects of that Locale
The loneliness highlighted above was roundly defeated last night as Great Aunt and Soxfather journeyed north from Rhode Island to take me out to dinner. Another plus, Great Aunt loves Brew City and that’s where we ended up. This had the corollary effect of having my favorite waitresses all checking their phones to insure it was indeed Saturday since I’m a Friday fixture there. It was all too much fun and exactly what I needed as these two people are a sure bet to raise my spirits by their mere presence. It was one of those nights I didn’t want to end but they eventually pried my hands off their arms and escaped after rescuing said spirits.
And Still a Super-Hero
I had a thoroughly entertaining video call with the FBR who continues to embellish her high five repertoire. She now has mastered the “up high, down low, in the middle, cut the pickle, tickle tickle”. You have to be a member of the family to appreciate what that means as yet another silly family tradition is passed to the next generation. Unfortunately the FBR was also sporting a fairly high fever that she woke up with. It didn’t slow her down too much and the only interruption in their schedule was moving her nap from her bed to my daughter’s chest. My Favorite Panamanian remains her typically moving target down in Panama. She followed up a huge Friday family party with a day squiring her mother and aunt up to the mountain town of Boquete yesterday. I did receive the customary sessions of guidance on how I should be conducting myself back here. Meanwhile the FBR is taking in her first ever chocolate festival in North Conway, New Hampshire with her parents. I’m guessing this will be a strong indication of the strength of her ABFA chocoholic genes.
Earlier in the day I took in Alita, Battel Angel, a movie I was looking forward to. I’m completely unaware of the manga series that served as the basis for this sci fi action flick which probably helped. I thoroughly enjoyed this mostly CGI adventure which was so expertly done that I soon forgot who was CGI and who wasn’t. Set in the distant future as a downtrodden city is controlled by another city hovering above and almost everyone seems to have cybernetic limbs. We are quickly introduced to a sprightly teenaged girl seeming cyborg. She figures out she’s an advanced combat model and severed cybernetic limbs are soon flying across the screen. The supporting cast was uniformly awesome led by the incomparable Christophe Walz and Mahersala Ali (who it seems is in every movie lately). The action is non-stop and expertly staged as long as you suspend your disbelief in the computer generated nature. Loved it.

Deep Southern Cuisine

The New Connoisseur of Patacones Returning from her Panamanian Adventures
I’m prepared to reclassify the recent family vacation and assign credit for cross cultural exchange. Anybody who has spent any time in Panama will know about patacones. They serve as a Panamanian side dish every bit as popular as French fries (or papas fritas as they are known down there). Patacones are slices of plantain that are smashed flat and then deep fried. It will surprise no one that knows me that I assiduously avoid eating them and remain fiercely loyal to the papas fritas side of the equation.
The New Jersey Version of Patacones
The FBR on the other hand is made of sterner stuff. While she was down in Panama last week her mother asked her to try patacones and she immediately became a true fan (she must get this epicurean adventurism from the Wingman side of the gene pool). In a move that thriller her mother my daughter bought some plantain this week and prepared some patacones at home for the FBR which were, once again, a huge hit, so credit for cross culturism in New Jersey.
And its Daddy-Daughter Day Today

I caught up with the m last night where the FBR agreed that patacones were a welcome addition to her snack array. She also revealed that she’s been brought into the old game that dates back to the time we lived in Rhode Island near Great Aunt and Soxfather. The game involved raising your hand for a high five saying “Up High” and after receiving that asking for a low five by saying “Down Low”. Before the low five can be delivered the hand is pulled away and the other person is mocked with a “Too Slow”. Soxfather was an acknowledged master of this with the toddler versions of my son and daughter. It was a little hard to manage over an IPad screen but the FBR did get me thirty to forty-five times last night while her mother and I tried to discuss the upcoming Oscars.
I also spoke with my Favorite Son and the BRS last night. They’ve fully recovered from their trip to Panama and the BRS is once again sleeping through the night now that she doesn’t have the enticing distraction of awakening at night to find her parents in the same room. She was in full “Viking” mode last night while eating -  roaring her approval whenever taking a bite of food and then seizing her water cup like it was a flagon of ale. She would subsequently slam that down on the table in satisfied glee. (I can hazard a guess from which side of the gene pool those antics derive).
I made my initial trek back to the movie theater to catch up on the movies I’ve missed over the past few weeks. I saw Cold Pursuit with old favorite Liam Neeson in the lead role. This was kind of a strange combination of action, revenge and dark humor. It never rose to the level of being a true dark comedy but had its moments. It would have been fun to see what the Coen brothers would have done with this material but I’m not certain Neeson would have been right for that. He plays a Rocky Mountain snow plow driver whose son is murdered by a smarmy Denver drug cartel. He sets about revenge by killing his way to the top even though he doesn’t have any discernible skills in that department. He proves a quick learner is is soon depositing bodies into picturesque mountain locales. The movie is all over the place with subplots involving a rival Native American drug cartel and a totally inept police department. Neeson delivers his usual amount of heart and gravitas but Laura Dern, as his wife, is criminally underused. There was some truly impressive camera work capturing the stark beauty of the Rockies. In the end, after thinking about it (which I shouldn’t have had to) I liked this.

Dichotomous Landscapes

I provide two photos today which display in no uncertain terms the dramatic change in scenery I’ve been subjected to over the past 24 hours. Just that short time ago I was enjoying the tropical view from our beachfront condo and this morning I was out moving ice and snow out of my driveway. It’s not a “fairness” issue because I rightfully assumed this morning’s exercise was a form of penance for the exorbitant amount of fun I had at the beach over the past couple weeks.
Parting Shot
I took this Photo as I Walked out of Condo for Last Time
The trip back yesterday was flawless. I spent my last night in Panama trying to eat every chicken wing the city of David offered. I was assisted in this by my wife’s incomparable family who gave me a fantastic send off. I flew back business class which was nice but I’m not convinced it’s worth the additional cost, except when paying for with accumulated miles. I did miss the sense of chaotic community and long rest room lines offered in the main cabin. In prior years and trips to Panama I’ve always found myself looking forward to returning to work. That was not the case yesterday. I think I’m ready for that anticipated retirement.
Driveway This Morning
I found Keene Friend circling the parking lot when I stepped out into the frigid air and we stopped at the 99 restaurant that my Favorite Son and I used to lunch at when he worked in Marlboro on our way home. I found something a little weird when I got home. The upstairs heat was off and the control panel was turned off. I assumed the batteries had failed but when I opened the panel to replace them I noticed that one battery had been reversed, positive pole turned to the negative side. I assumed this was done by either Deckzilla Dude or the electrician while I was gone but I contacted both of them and they denied it. So I have a mystery on my hands.

Last Sunsets

Our Last Las Lajas Sunset for a While

I was so involved in enjoying the presence of my daughter and son’s families that I neglected to realize that my own vacation was of a limited basis. This afternoon I travel back to David to catch an early morning flight to Boston tomorrow. That meant last evening was my last Las Lajas sunset. My wife and took it and the beach rewarded us with one of its singularly colorful swallowing of the sun by the Pacific Ocean.
Wife and I on Our Morning Beach Walk
It was a fun day for just the two of us as we had the entire condo complex to ourselves. I spent the time waiting for the sunset with trailing a hermit crab as he made his way around our seats. I eventually gave him a lift to the surf line as he looked to be in search of a bigger home, barely fitting in his current abode. That was the most exciting event of the day as both my wife and I recovered some of the energy spent over the past week chasing granddaughters.
My Freind - the Crab
We got into our interrupted routine which meant a pre-breakfast beach walk followed by two sessions of boogie boarding and pool swims over the course of the day. Most of the day was spent reading on the beach as the surf marched up and down dictated by the tides. I finished up a book my daughter gifted me, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I’ve gotten away from commenting on the many books I read but this one needs mentioning. If anybody is looking for a fantastic read then I cannot recommend Eleanor enough. I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in the last five years and found myself laughing out loud in a number of places. It is a book that is simultaneously heartbreaking, poignant, and, as mentioned above, laugh out loud funny. Don’t miss this.

Going to Miss my Beach Reads

So I’m heading home shortly and there is an ice storm to greet my first day back at work. Sounds about right.

Footprints in Tropical Sand

Footprints of My Wife, Myself and the Two Granddaughters
Most, if not all, footprints made in the sand of a beach quickly fall victim to the tides, washed from existence. I’d like to think my family made some of a more indelible class this past week on the incomparable beach of Las Lajas. I’ve assiduously avoided writing here on Frail Deeds for the past week during the time my entire family was gathered down here. Writing seemed like such a mundane waste compared with spending any amount of time with any of the visiting family members.
FBR Sprinting Through Airport

To Find her Grampa
The party started a week ago Sunday with the morning arrival of the New Jersey bunch, my daughter, Wingman, and of course, the FBR. My wife’s entire family gathered to welcome the arriving dignitaries but as predicted as soon as the FBR spotted me she bellowed out a loud ”GRAMPA!” and charged through the disembarking passengers to deliver one of her signature hugs. She was initially a little more circumspect about greeting the other aunts, uncles, grandparents which I was taken to task for, as if I had any control over her preferences.
Later that Day ABFA, Son, and BRS Arrive
After a quick trip to the grocery store to lay in supplies for the week we were off to Las Lajas, with the FBR inquiring every five minutes about the distance remaining. My wife’s mother and sisters also journeyed down to spend the day with us at the beach. My Favorite Panamanian and I were back on the road to David late in the afternoon to greet the second half of the family deployment as my Favorite Son, the ABFA and the BRS arrived. There was a fair amount of trepidation involved in the trip as this was the BRS’ first long trip and first airplane trip. She handled both like an absolute champ as had the FBR earlier.
Sunset Viewing Array
The parents were predictably a little gassed from their day long trip, After running the gauntlet of welcoming family members, reassembled for their arrival, we stopped by El Fogon for some nutrition before another grocery store stop and a night drive down to Las Lajas. I felt a certain feeling of fulfillment when I had everybody under the same roof. The condo is fairly spacious but hosting eight people, even with two of them of the miniature variety, would have been a challenge if we weren’t all so close. Family is cool that way.
Wife and FBR at Sunset
My wife and I gave up the bedrooms to the visitors since they both arrived with young children who’s bed times had to be regulated. We had a queen sized inflatable mattress which occupied the middle of the family room each night after we decided to retire. This turned out to be handy in the morning when each granddaughter woke up and was released into our custody so their parents could hopefully grab some extra sleep.
Early Morning Abuela Time
This was predictably a joy for my wife and I and we settled into a routine for the week where we would anxiously await the appointed hour when our bed was populated with smiling granddaughters. We also started a tradition of a morning beach walk to reduce the decibel levels within the condo and assist the aforementioned extended parental slumber.

BRS Takes Her Swings

Wife's Family Around Cake
The big event of the week was a birthday celebration where  a large percentage of my wife’s very large family assembled to mark the birthdays of my wife, her twin sister, and of course, the BRS. There was a large mermaid themed piñata that proved invulnerable to our most dedicated strikes. A large family contingent stayed in the nearby Show Pony hotel where their large room served as a party location for two nights running.
BRS Constantly Changing Fridge Magnets
Most of the story of this magical week will be told through the accompanying pictures. The FBR was initially a little tentative about the pool requiring assistance even with her floaties capably holding her above water level. By the end of the week she eschewed any assistance and was confidently crisscrossing the pool in an always entertaining series of games she created. At one point I was a bear and she was a shark. The FBR showed no fear at all when I would launch her into the air for a splash landing with Wingman. The BRS on the other hand, was overly confident throughout the week, truly relishing her first ever time in a pool. The girl is going to be something of a daredevil.
Launching the FBR
She even tried crawling into the waves when we brought her down to the surf line. The FBR would hold court in the shallow water and greet whichever adult arrived on the boogie board that she wanted to see another ride. That was one of her easier demands to fill. We gathered each evening on the beach to watch the sun descend into the Pacific, usually in spectacular fashion. On two evenings I was called upon to gather some drift wood and we had bonfires in the condo fire pit. The FBR labeled this as officially “camping”. Her abuela introduced her to the magic of marshmallow roasting while I focused on trying not to burn down the grass thatched bohio inexplicably placed right next to the fire pit.
FBR Camping

While hanging out with my granddaughters was the predicted delight I think my favorite part of the week for me was the time we got to spend with their parents. All too often our visits are consumed with chasing after the aforementioned progeny. This week afforded us the time to remember how much we actually like each other. The highlight of the week for me was the final night together where was gathered around the table to play a spirited game of rummy. My wife would claim too “spirited” as I accidently broke one of her lampshades over the table by celebrating a winning discard. I only bled a little and everybody, especially the ABFA for some reason, had a good laugh at my predicament.
Gathered Around Table
The BRS discovered on her third night here that she was sleeping in the same room as her parents and this led to some rough nights for them over their remaining time here. Instead of falling back to sleep like she does in her own room at home she decided to inform her parents that it was time to play on repeated occasions throughout the night. The early morning grandparent beach walk was therefore especially welcome by my son and the ABFA.
Independently Aquatic FBR
I felt a certain closing of fate with the passing of this week. For so long my wife and I talked about hosting the family down here and realizing that long held dream was more than redeemed in superb fashion. We didn’t try to do too much other than enjoying the beach, pool, and mostly each other’s company. They usually visit Panama every two years but they were convinced they’ll be back net year. Las Lajas will do that to you. They’re all safely back home as I write this and it was a little sad to return to a very empty condo but I can’t stop smiling thinking about the unmitigated success the entire week was.
